The I know more than the experts guy

10k as in a fish only tank 30 gallons or under. No way it should cost any where near 10k for a Fowlr that the guy wanted to keep a pair of clowns in. I mean a JBJ 28 with PC would be 300 bucks, There is no way the rest would cost 9,700. lol

Oh, lmao. That's just too funny. For $10,000 you could set up one hell of a 30 gallon. With a gold plated stand! :p

Back to the topic.

My response is to let THAT person continue to do what he wants even though his livestock is dying. No need to be so anal to tell him what is right or wrong with his setup if they do not want to listen in the 1st place. The death of his livestock will prove that they were wrong and you were right. It's sad for us to see dead livestock but in the long run, it WILL hurt their wallet and one fine day, they will feel the pinch, without you ever reminding them. One way to sock it in his face is to do it in front of his colleague saying that you kept this fish for so and so years while his is dead for a week. That would stop him from boasting his deed to you or his colleague. The trick is to do this every time he tells you that his latest acquisition is dead. Keep doing this and eventually it will stop. If he really wants to keep pets, he will turn to you for advice. He will give up and quit the hobby if you're lucky. You could buy his used equipment for cheap! Works for me and I did not need to be stressed for his livestock, it's his problem anyway and it's up to them to think about it .

Time is too short for us to worry about other people pets. Let them do what they want. It gives you reason to sock it to them when their pets die while yours continue to be swimming in your tank. Their 'expertise' opinion will not last. His friends/colleague/relative would remark it to him on why his livestock keep dying and they would spend more money replacing it. And if they really quit they hobby, you've got another point to sock them too. If they decide to boast of having kept reef tank before, you could tell the people around this person that he did not do a proper job of maintaining his tank and his livestock kept dying. There were no success in his effort.

Not to get off point, but once you get into ro/di, skimmers, ca rx or 2 part with dosing pumps, lights to grow sps, corals, fish, LR, sand, salt you get to 10k really fast.

Most of these know it alls will listen and even if they don't want to admit it if you invite them to see yours/another successful tank they will see the difference.....just be constructive or you're liable to sound just like them!

Yes, there is always a know it all with deep pockets everywhere. It is human nature to pretend you know something, or try to teach something to someone else (even though you are a novice), but the fact of the matter is they like to teach stuff they heard from others instead of actually experiencing and accomplishing the stuff they preach.

Novices preach because they are insecure. It gives them a blanket of security to be in control. People like to be in control. I am in no way an expert in the reef hobby, but I do have many experiences in life. (serving in the military and going to war, traveling the world, learning new cultures, moving to Southeast asia, etc.)

For example (off topic), my other hobby martial arts. I have been studying martial arts for over 20+ years, and it just humors me to see new novices come into the martial arts acting as though they are experts with a few months of experience by stroking their ego all the time. They then try to teach other beginners something at the gym as though they run the gym. These people don't last long at the gym because they are too self centered, they rarely improve because they think they know it all. They are there for a few months but less then one year. this cycle continues with new students all the time, rinse and repeat. I like this quote "the difference between a black belt and a white belt student, is that the black belt student never quit" same goes to reefing IMHO.

Over the years I have come to the conclusion that being humble is the only way to improve yourself. You always strive to learn something new everyday to better yourself.

let's not stop at the local fish store; there are plenty of e-thugs with the same kind of attitudes that frequent these boards as well...........

How many of you have that local guy that knows more than everyone, been in the hobby for a year and has advice on every subject like he thinks he Bruce Carlson and Julian SPrung combined.

Well, not to brag, but I'm not just like Bruce Carlson and Julian Sprung combined, I'm more like Bruce Carlson, Julian Sprung, Eric Borneman, Jack Randall and John Ciotti combined!
