I got my package a couple of month's ago, with the second batch Richard gave me a bunch of extras. One of them was a fish, kinda of ugly and brown I thought he might be a grouper or something. This fish mostly stay's hidden in the rock's and comes out at night. Did anyone else get one of these, and if so what is it, so that I can I'd it? I also got a tiger goby as a hitchhiker.

looked up Frogfish, that's not him. He look's kinda like a rock cod but not so fat, he look's almost like a gold fish, but saltwater type.

 Hey stranger ... I didn't get any fish, that I know of, unless Picasso had it for lunch .... BTW .. got outbid on make-a-wish for a ride with JR at Lowes ... bummer ...:sad2:

Gonna run the #5 car...:) I was wondering if everyone else got a fish, this guy came in a bag so he wasn't a hitchhiker. The problem is when I added my tang the fish came down with what look's like ick. The Tang doesn't have any sign's now does the tiger goby. I would have expected them all to have signs, so now I am trying to find out what kind of fish this guy is to determine wether he has something else wrong with him..

I did a search in this forum for "toadfish". Came up with the following image. Yours look anything like this? (not the same as a frog fish)

Nope, doesn't look anything like that. It's not flat like that fish more upright like a gold fish with eye's on either side. When I say ugly I don't really mean wierd just kind of a mottled brown. It really look's like a gold fish in body shape but is brown. I thought everyone got a fish...:)

MMMAAAANNNNN ... I'm glad I didn't get anything that looked like that doclink !!! I'd have nightmares!! No fish in my shipment, but I did get 2 anemones (one has since gone the way of an old helium balloon!! but the other one is beautiful). The donkey dung cuke went the way of most dung ... Loud flush! (it was ugly anyway). Gotta nose around and see if I can find your critter.

Voodude don't put any clown fish in with those Anenomes. The clowns don't know they can't host in them, I found out the hard way. I guess I am going to have to go quarantine tank and deal with this problem that look's like ick.

really need a photo, in the gulf to the carib there are a number of fish this might be.

possible fish include:

at least 3 or more kinds of damsel fish that are not very colorfull.
perhaps a juvi stage of a hamlet, a grouper or related fish.

just to name the ones that seem close to what you described.

and colors ... many fish change color as the mature.
so the guly pup could grow into a giant grouper or a pretty hamlet or just stay the way it is.

It look's like a grouper to me. I will be trying to catch him this weekend so If I do I will get you a picture.

very well could be one...

I have 2 books one on critters and one on fish that are photo books for divers to ID stuff.

very good for the TBS critters and stuff :)

ISBN 1-878348-07-8

Reef Fish Identification
Florida Caribbean Bahamas

Author is Paul Humann

has very good info on how common, where found, at what depth and other info like that and it's grouped by body type.
so when you say for example "long silver fish " I can get a whole list of fish that look like that to work thru.

if it is a grouper it may not be easy to id at this stage...
most photos in this book are adult sized, perhaps somewhere online is a site with some juvi forms to look at.
also there are some demsels in the book that look as ugly as a grouper so that could be also....
or a pigfish or a snapper -- some of them might look the same at juv stages....

Not my experience....I added a Maroon clown and he moved directly into one of those anemones within minutes of his addition to the tank.

I think I have 4 different types of anemone in my shipment and two Maroon clowns have not been the least bothered by them. In fact, they really seem to enjoy them a lot!

So...Maroons seem safe. Other species of clown...I don't know.

Me too....had a moroon that was in love with condys/flowers......sent him to a freind in Maine....with some anemones....he jumped right in in the new tank in 2 min....was too cool......neat clowns....but the only one that will host condys/flowers ....easily...usually......

Hey Richard what was the species on the fish you gave me in my second shipment? He is brown and look's a little like a gold fish body type and only comes out at night? During the day he hides in the rock's very well I might add...

Oh and by the way welcome back I bet jet lag is a *****...
