Long story short, to each his own.
Agreed! everyone has there own right to choose how they enjoy this wonderful hobby!
I just think it's important to be able to share experiences from both sides of the fence. I see RC as the bible of reefkeeping, people come here for advise, guidance, and general reefkeeping info. There are soooo many threads on pimping polyps and super rare true LE never to be seen hypermorphed super actinic macro lens photoshopped polyps, that a new collector or even new reefer gets into the mindset that the only way of aquiring them is to pay $$$ for them and that this is the way reefing is or should be. The sad part is I wonder how many of these single polyp chop shop frags have survived long term?
Seasoned reefers and people that have read the boards and done their research have their own assumptions when buying but many newb's go by what they read here or see for sale on EBAY or CL. This is a thread that was intented to give them something to think about when looking for their next zoa purchse.
My personal opnion is that I hate the names and the things I believe go with them. For example the elusive 'purple hornet' yeah I like the polyp, will I spend an arm and a leg to get it? no. Will I find it later in life for a more reasonable price? maybe. Will I lose sleep if I never find it? absolutly not. There are 1000's of other polyps that will take my mind off of them in a heartbeat. But the problem is, they have been pimped up so much that many people feel it is the ultimate in polyp collecting to own these which means that they will pay $$ to get them, thus giving the retailer the oppertunity to bump the price...supply and demand, maybe...greed, more likely...
Thanks all for your input on this thread, I like how the discussion has stayed PG and we are able to talk without flaming each other
