The 'infamous' named polyps

Long story short, to each his own.

Agreed! everyone has there own right to choose how they enjoy this wonderful hobby!

I just think it's important to be able to share experiences from both sides of the fence. I see RC as the bible of reefkeeping, people come here for advise, guidance, and general reefkeeping info. There are soooo many threads on pimping polyps and super rare true LE never to be seen hypermorphed super actinic macro lens photoshopped polyps, that a new collector or even new reefer gets into the mindset that the only way of aquiring them is to pay $$$ for them and that this is the way reefing is or should be. The sad part is I wonder how many of these single polyp chop shop frags have survived long term?

Seasoned reefers and people that have read the boards and done their research have their own assumptions when buying but many newb's go by what they read here or see for sale on EBAY or CL. This is a thread that was intented to give them something to think about when looking for their next zoa purchse.

My personal opnion is that I hate the names and the things I believe go with them. For example the elusive 'purple hornet' yeah I like the polyp, will I spend an arm and a leg to get it? no. Will I find it later in life for a more reasonable price? maybe. Will I lose sleep if I never find it? absolutly not. There are 1000's of other polyps that will take my mind off of them in a heartbeat. But the problem is, they have been pimped up so much that many people feel it is the ultimate in polyp collecting to own these which means that they will pay $$ to get them, thus giving the retailer the oppertunity to bump the price...supply and demand, maybe...greed, more likely...

Thanks all for your input on this thread, I like how the discussion has stayed PG and we are able to talk without flaming each other

I remember when I was stocking up my first tank. I know there's a certain amount of $$$ required for this hobby, but I could imagine how these guys with these fully stocked, huge tanks could afford it. The cost of stocking my little nano tank made my head spin. Then I went to my first local frag swap/ auction. I stocked my tank with SPS for 50 bucks...and the only reason I spent that much was I spent $20 on a acropora nana frag.

This hobby is so commercialized, it's ridiculous. It doesn't seem like fellow hobbyists are growing and fragging to recover their cost anymore. More like greeds to me. I wonder how many reefer will remains on here if RC banned all selling? Of course it's a free country and no one is forcing anyone to buy anything.

The very reason I resurrected this thread. You're right, no one is being forced, but many are not aware of the history and how these names and prices came to be. It continues to run very good reefers away as well as newbies who now can't afford these prices or the ones who can, but refuse to pay these crazy prices.

Mucho Reef
