Yes. That Marc is a riot isn't he.
Always private messaging people and showing them what he calls his candid photography. And always talking about getting on his knees. Just think, he actually does that to everybody. When he told me that, I was like Cool!
And i'm liking his new idea he told me last night, about needing a travel muse to keep him entertained while on road trips.

Speaking of names, hopefully Marc, you'll show us those sparkly palys you were telling me about last night at the thread here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=14733195#post14733195
You told me you wish you could see some of those candy apple reds in person. At the time I didn't know what you meant but
later i realized i'd definitely heard of that paly "name" before.
Don't know if it's sparkly though but maybe someone can post their photo on that other thread?

.....Okay, it's April 4, which means no more whacky April Fool's banter. :D

Just thought I'd bring this to top again incase anyone had more to say about the subject, without fear of a hijack.

Thanks all.

Glad your still bumping lilly! Great thread to bump for sure. I had to get a second job to buy nice polyps.....still cant afford them....

lol.
How are you Sir Patrick. I didn't see you for a bit. It's good to see you.

:D Yep, remember? We all discussed this in one of these threads, may have even been this thread. four or five of us on a thread discussed equal time up top. So that's what i'm doing.

So that sometimes we'll have this (various categories) on the first page:
1. "Alkalinity and your zoanthids", "too many nitrates in my tank?", "What kind of Lighting would you suggest".
2. "Rare!", "True!", LE", "Named!", "How much are these worth?" "Frags?", "Naming is cool."
3. "Naming is BS, so charging an arm and a leg is justified". etc. "Marketing hype.", "Don't buy into it."
4. "Look at my palys!", "Sparkly Palys, show 'em to me. "My new pics!", "Show me all your red zoas!"
5. "Help! What's wrong with my zoas?", "Help, my zoas are melting.", "What is this unidentified pest on my polyps?"

Instead of this on the first page:
1. Rare, black, LE, True bumblebee paly
2. Rare hornets?
3. Rare blue hornet
4. Are these are, or are they True?
5. Who has hornets
6. Can i buy your X?
7. Do you have any rare zoanthids?
8. Blue rings, not True?
9. What are these worth
10. What are the rare zoanthids?

Thank you. Thank you very much.
:)

I was just all distracted and serious from making that list.

Is it a purple hornet?

How 'bout now?

Can you hear me now?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm fairly certain that if you took all the boards, from New to the Hobby & Reef Discussion, through the LPS, SPS, & Zoa, to the local club forums, there would be a thread going on this subject continuously on RC for several years. If not infamous named zoas, then acans, or chalices, or scolys, or anything coming out of Australia, and so on. I don't know, I don't get to worked up over it myself.

The bottom line, IMHO, is that our hobby is, at the core, about collecting. For some collectors, the thrill of it comes from having some crazy "thing" (in our case corals or fish) that others in the hobby don't. If they have the money, and the desire to do so, more power to them. Me, I like what I like, not because of the name, or the rareness, or the LE status, because it looks nice. If I can afford it, and I can justify the price of it, I buy it. If I can find it and trade for it locally...even better. But that's just me.

I'm more of an SPS guy, and I go for some named frags because one, I know what I'm getting. It's always fun to get a browned out frag from the LFS on the cheap, only to have it turn into a real gem of a piece, but sometimes it's nice to know what you're getting. Secondly, especially with acros, there is a better rate of success with aquacultered frags. So when I pick up an ORA frag, at least I know I've got a fighting chance. Fortunately, for the most part, SPS frags aren't too insane with the prices. There are some pricey montis out there, and of course there's the $500 efflo, but in general, really nice stuff can be had for less then $100, and more often then not, for less then $50...and of course, if you can find it from a local club member, you can get it even cheaper then that.

Just my 2 cents.

I agree with a lot of what you said but I really don't think that having things that others don't have is the 'core' of the hobby for everyone. What drives us as hobbyists is different for everybody.

That's not what I said, or at least that's not what I meant to say if that's how it came across. Some get their kicks from having that super rare piece that not a lot of people have. Not all, or even most, but for some that's what they enjoy. Which I'm fine with.

To me, it's the nature of the beast. Some get their enjoyment in having the stuff that others don't. Some want to have the hot, FOTM piece. Some just like the way a certain piece looks, regardless of the name or rareness. But as a group, reefers are collectors IMO, and as such, there will always be those that have the money, and the desire to spend big bucks on certain things, whether or not others think the price tag is justified.

Long story short, to each his own.
