The Largest fish in the sea?

Yeha that's what i have heard to, plus it's kinda sad. They are like sitting ducks, it's not even really a challange, alot of them will come up to you for a quick pet :P

Well if we don't count sharks (Whale Shark) then the Ocean Sunfish is the largest at over 2 tones. None of the groupers get that large.

I have seen personally a halibut over 300 lbs, but I know they get much larger then that. They don't call them ââ"šÂ¬Ã…"œBarn Door Fish" for nothing. Some of those groupers are crazy big too.

never seen those sunfish before... pretty crazy....

the 4 foot napolean wrasse was at marinelifedesigns.com in ft, lauderdale , they should still have him, but they dont allow access to retail buyers anymore.

I think they always sell all of their display fish. and the napolean was for like 7500. Theyve had other "illigal" fish there before, I remember a yellow angel was like 2000 bucks.

THey also have another smaller one without the hump in the same display tank and had another in a holding tank.

The display must be around 20feet long, 6 feet front to back, and around 10 feet deep. (it had a ton of LIVING COLOR fake rock and coral structures in it)

I'll check if they let me in, and I'll take some pics.

some pics of the 6 foot goliath grouper at the tampa bay aquarium.

Personally i dont think its a fake either, the fish casts a perfect shadow and that would be difficult to reproduce with photoshop (trust me... i have tried a similar project as a gag gift for a friend). It is definitely possible for groupers to reach that size and bigger. Before this thread i head never heard of the Sunfish.....but after seeing that pic i think that guy definitely wins weight wise. Hope to see more pics....taggin along.

I can't imagine seeing something so incredible and wanting to kill it, don't think it's wrong...just can't relate to it...they are incredible fish.

d.

I can't imagaine how someone could kill that huge sunfish!! I mean seriously how? Wonder if it was found dead? Maybe they used whale harpoons or something, i have no idea.

When I had an over-abundant amount Ctenaphores in my tank attached to leather corals, my research had shown the only active fish to eat them were the Sunfish.

Big tank, but I still think its tail would have stuck out and on to the floor... :D

Well you said excluding sharks, but what about rays :D
The third biggest fish is the manta ray but it isn't that close to reefs. They're open water fish

looks like a lancelatus grouper to me. Which, by the way, get slightly larger that a goliath grouper. They get to be about 9 feet long and 900 lbs. Here's another pic of one being caught:

Here's what they look like when they are younger...they lose their yellow as they age:

These are the largest bony fish of the reefs. Also, probably my favorite of all fish!:D

Top pic looks more like an oversized small-mouth bass
