The Moorish Idol Thread

You said banana really ??

Yes I said banana.

Covey that is a good picture and it shows what I have been telling people, they have very weak mouths and no, or very small teeth.
Their jaw is hinged near the end of the beak unlike other fish where the jaw is hinged under their eye. This makes for a weak bite. These fish can't chew much of anything and they can't rip off anything substantial. Their diet is soft mushy sponge.

Beautiful fish, and great thread!!!

MY LFS has a 4 inch MI that is eating well ( brine, nori, mysis, flake and pellet ), im just not to sure I can fit him in my tank. Ive got a 100g 5 foot tank, with one yellow tang, and a male blue throat trigger. I would love to get the MI, just knowing how good it is eating. I do have a plan to get a 180g in a year or so, but it is not set in stone. How big do these guys get in a tank? And do you think a 4 inch MI would over do it in my tank?? I only plan on adding a pair of flame angels to this tank, so my fish load will not be to high. And Ive got a modded maxi, so the fish will have a good current to swim in. Any input would be great!!

How long should a tank be established for before a moorish idol can even be considered? My lfs has a 2.5" MI, which is eating extremely well. I have personally fed it myself, and it dashes directly to the mysis shrimp when it is dropped into the tank. I have a 90g, which is just over 3 months old. I know the MI would eventually need a bigger home, but I feel that if i miss this opportunity on such a healthy one, I may never see another healthy specimin again. Should I jump on this oppurtunity, or wait for my tank to mature a bit? Thanks

Hi Paul, Hi everyone
I hardly feed banana but it is a good approach
Have a look on how one of my Zanclus eats Banana (you must have quick time or any thing that is compatible with mov format)

if you want to have look on my topic about the Zanclus and my experience, have a go here (by the way, speaking Portuguese is a good idea)

http://www.reefforum.net/showthread.php?t=5012

I mostly feed natural sponge, live, frozen or masked in a paste that I make and already gave de recipe to Paul. I also feed mysys, krill, freeze dried algae (nori, ocean nutrition, two little fishies) fresh algae collected at the sea side.
The sponge in question is Hymneniacidon sanguinea that I collect at a rocky beach close to my home in northern Portugal (you may see many photographs of it in my topic as well as in the previous part of this topic, page 36 or something like that) and the sponge in question can live in my reef but it is usually eaten by the Zanclus and the Centropyge within a few days depending on their appetite and quantity. I use de sponge as main food for the Zanclus but variety is very important both to provide more balanced food and prevent dependence from a specific type of food, so among others, banana can be an excellent approach which can also be used to introduce other foods to the Zanclus, foods that you can incrust in the soft banana pulp.

Pedro, beautiful pictures and beautiful Idol.
Micheal a moorish Idol gets about 7" tall and long. Your tank is really a little too small. My tank is 6' long and it frustrated the Idol. Also out of the many I have had, they all ate. That is not the problem with these fish although most people think it is.
Fishyz, it's not really the age of the tank, it's more the experience of the aquarist. An Idol requires a lot of attention if you want to keep it for years. They need a lot of food which is detrimental to your tank water. They also need a variety of food and some or most of that food should be sponge. I know some frozen foods include sponge but I doubt it is very much. As far as I know, sponge is not harvested in much quantity to use as fish food.
Good luck.
Paul

Thanks Paul. I was thinking the 100g was alittle small, but I figured I would ask. Ill just wait a little longer till I can get the 180 up and running. Best of luck with your Idols guys!!!

Thanks Paul, I'd like to eventually sometime in the future get a MI, but i'm just not sure if now is the right time. I want to be able to meet the specific needs of my fish, and make sure their environment is right. I am able to feed my tank multiple times per day, and I am willing to go the extra distance to make sure their diet is precise. How long would it take for the 2.5" MI to outgrow my tank? Thanks again for your help.

My two morish idols have had them over 3 months now. They eat anything i throw in the tank and are my most personable fish. The right one is becoming more dominant so my worst fears are coming true i will have to get rid of the one on the left. He has been taking a beating but still doing good. I've been feeding angel&butterfly formula heavily.

Hi everyone,

yoboyjdizz, not necessarily. Can you house another one or two? If yes then they normaly organise them selves in a school and live in harmony. Besides tank volume, aquascaping and tank mates count sometimes more. As you surely noticed, Zanclus have a remarkable capacity do manoeuver but like to manoeuver without feeling cramped. Well if you have te conditions think about it, its unforgetable, believe me, I know from personal experience.

Kind Regards
Pedro Nuno (Blueregaltang)

I havent thought of that? My current tank mates are:
Emperor Angel
Blue Tang
Pair of ocellaris clown fish
Lawnmower Blenny
Looking to add: Group of lytreil anthias pair o flame wrasse's scotts fairy wrasse and another wrasse
Then three more tangs Poweder Blue, Yellow and Purple Tangs.. Might be too much and has anyone seen a group of three or more idols living together?

anyone have any pics with their long streamers still intact? most of the pics i see here are really short or none at all....

when i went diving i saw them with like 6" streams and nice and thick too
