The Moorish Idol Thread

Thats awesome! I love the clams too! I think a sun coral would really be a nice contrast in there too. Your idols looking great.

My boys streamer is getting really long at the moment-about 10 inches i'd guess. I'm feeding probably 10 times aday atleast. I've gotta keep up with the water changes. Hes happy though so that makes me happy.

My idol sleeps out in the open at night just slowly swimming back and forth. I have a low open rock layout waiting for my sps to fill in the top.

My idols starting to nip corals! sob. I think hes killed my new duncan. He kept dislodging my new monti before the putty could set. Naughty boy!

Yeah, hammers, acros and more. No nipping. He really had a taste for the duncan though. Lol. Nevermind. Hes my real prize. Thats only 1 coral in over a year. I think the thing with the monti was that he just likes to pull at stuff. The fact it wasnt glued into place was the annoying part. Mostly hes good though really.
Hey-they're not supposed to be a reef safe fish and as they get older thet're gonna change their habits. Pitty as i liked that new coral.

I don't see the MI on DD - which I am assuming is Diver's Den? They usually post what it has been eating directly under the photo. That would be a better indicator...

So you got the "ins" huh? Nice :) Do you know if/what it is eating?

You can sign up with LiveAquaria and they will email you a "sneak peek" list daily (M-F) of all the fish that will be put up for sale that night. They will have the MI for sale tonite probably between 5:00pm and 8:00pm cst. I don't know what it is eating, but if you are interested in it, you can check off and on with LiveAquaria facebook and see if anything is said about the MI there.

Kingrob8611, I sent you a message about this fish. But to quickly answer your question,
No, no one has had success with this fish. Success is if the animal lives about as long as it's natural lifespan. An Idol should live for about 20 years (that is a guess based on similar sized fish)
The vast majority live a few months and almost all of them eat. Food is not the problem.

I am not trying to promote anyone buying this fish but are we guessing how old they live in the wild. Are there studys anywhere that show the life expectancy of this fish and others in the wild and do other fish live full term in our tanks? I love to read, where would I find this information?

I don't think there is thats why I said
(that is a guess based on similar sized fish)

I do know similar fish like tangs of that size live about 20 years as I know of a couple of instances. I have kept many tangs for over ten years and other fish for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, after that amount of time, invariably, in a tank, an accident kills the fish.
An accident killed my Idol after five years and my 12 year old hippo tang along with an 18 year old cusk eel.
I know a Moorish Idol is not a tang or butterfly, it is in a class by it's own, Zanclus (sp)
But I do know it should live much longer than the few years most people are able to keep them.
In the South Pacific where they are from they may live much longer. They live mostly in shallow water where there are much fewer predators and they have a specific diet of sponge which is not eaten by many other animals so there is not much competition for food sources. I have followed them in the sea and they seem to live in a perfect world of clean, moving water with very few adversaries. ;)
