The Moorish Idol Thread

The usual green nori I get is from dr mac, you get 10 sheets for $4. I was tryin to find some of the red stuff to try, and petsmart had it for $4.99, so I thought i would give it a try. I dont know of any asian markets in my area. I will try the different pellets together thing though, thanks. I will have had my idols for a week tommorrow, they are eating more and more each day. I am going to let them in to the (population) tomorrow or the next, all of my tangs swim through the grate to see them all the time anyway:)

Well, just a update, after a brief series of chases from the koran and the yellow tang, the new guys were getting scraped up a bit. This led to both of them getting (pop eye) on the same side of each of their bodies. Which in turn led to each of them getting ich.I treated with what I had, (ich attack, garlic, melafix, selcon) and they seemed to be getting better. As the days went on one of the two (the one that was not stuck to the powerhead) started not to eat as much and was getting lathargic, the injured one was eating twice as much as before, and now prefers to eat flake over any other thing I feed. (even gets in the feeding frenzy with the tangs, and eats their poop:) I am now sad to say the one that was not doing so well is mia, and i can't find a body. When I do my tank cleaning and water chang later I hope I find him, but I assume the worst. He will be mised. I will definatly post some pics tommorow after the tank clears up. Thanks for reading.

Small update: Its officially been a year with my idol under my care. I would like to get some recent shots up later this week! Hopefully i get another 10 plus years out of this beautiful fish.

A quick update from me again, well, since my last post, i had a parasite outbreak, and a case of popeye. lost my christmas wrass to parasite, lost my big koran to popeye, and now the morish has ick on its tail again, arg! Still using fresh garlic, nori, and selcon. The morish will now eat anything that comes its way though. My hippo still has alittle cotton over one eye, but is getting better. Hopefully things will work out. I will surelly post some pics as soon as i get the time. I have no idea how i got there issues, but my guess is some of it came from the idol, added with stress on the others. I will try to bounce back again.

Pontiac keep eye on your water quality and do water changes when needed. Feed heavily with garlic and selcon and your fish should recover.

tanya72806, its great your Idol is eating however it does look a little skinny. You should not be able to see its dorsal bone. Keep feeding it extra for a few weeks so it can gain weight. I think most Idols dont survive because they get to a point where they get too skinny and then things go downhill. Look at yoboyjdizz Idol in the above pics for which he had it for a year. Good luck with your beautiful Idol

Cthetoy brings up a good point, but like yours mine was skinny as first but with a good diet (as best i can provide) you can fatten him/her up in no time. I feed three times a day with foods soak in garlic, selcon and vita-chem. At least 3 times a week i feed a full sheet of green sea veggies. Aslong as your idol is eating and you reduce the the stress on it your chances are good. Now for long term survival i still think the jury is out to how to real accomplish that goal.

Live sponge is probably the best you can do for your idol as i can't dive like paul and collect some but have been thinking about buying live sponge but that could get costly. Has anybody tired this?

Well, I've been following this thread since the begining, but haven't taken the plunge..untill today!:D The LFS had a few Zanclus swimming in a show tank looking quite active and undernourished. I asked the man to feed 'em for me, which he promptly did. All of them ate artemia, which isn't much, but at least a positive sign. The fattest one came home with me and is currently learning his way through my reef. He is picking about and taking bits of algae, but has ignored any of the many sponges growing in the tank. Maybe they are picky. Maybe he's waiting until dark!

In any case, you'll be hearing from me, as I relay my experiences with this aristocrat of reef gorgeousness. I'll admit, he is not my first, but my first in a reef. Wish me luck.

Yeah I know wat you mean, its weird though whn you look at him from behind he is fat as all hell lol Himand the achilles are etting along GREAT and eat like vaccum cleaners so far I am ver happy with him so far. My husband has some video of them i a gonna post.

Question for you guys though. Have any of you guys had them with linkias ?

here's a picture of mine that i've had for about a week.

eats mysis like a pig and pellets but not w/as much gusto.

anyone else notice how fast their streamer grows?
it seams to grow a .25" every day. this is a pic from a few days ago but the stringy part of the streamer is already an 1" longer.

everything i have read that if it is healthy then it will grow fast mine idol was really big but the streamer seem to be about 3 in long

Hello everyone, I just stumbled on this thread. Thought I'd join in. I dont know anyone else who has a moorish idol and kept it successfully. I've had my moorish idol for about 3.5 years now. He eats everything from flakes to frozen to freezdried foods. I haven't had a problem with him eating my corals until recently, he seems to be picking at a patch of zoos. Ahwell, I'd rather have the fish than the zoos. I'll upload a pic soon.

Lil update...... Well my idol is now eating a

1/4 sheet of seaweed
1 cube of mysis
Prime reef flakes
Sea veggies flakes

everyday all day :)
