The Moorish Idol Thread

Is the biggest problem with these fish is getting them to eat?Because Les at wetpetshawaii keeps the fish for two weeks and treats them and makes sure they are eating before he ships them out.

I think PaulB would tell you that most eat. Unfortunately it seems they still fade away and die in the end. Thats why we have to keep searching for the answer. I'm trying the constant feeding approach. Every time i pass the tank i feed, and i'm here most of the time as i work from home. Every day i wake up and look at the tank hoping hes still ok.
So no, thats not the real problem-its apparantly that they waste away in time even if they are eating like a pig. Read this thread back to back-its a good read!:reading::spin1:

Thanks! He was in a tank for 8 months before he's been in mine for a few weeks. I, like you, feed as often and as much variety as possible.

They truly are beautiful fish.

:)They are beautiful indeed and real characters. I see you have a maroon clown. I had to trade mine in to the LFS as he used to chase my idol around the tank and nip his streamer off. Your idol looks happy.

Maroons are nasty - agreed. He stays in his anenome about 95% of the time which is the only reason I keep him. Otherwise; he'd be gone. Only if other fish get near his anenome does he jot out and boss them around.

How long did it take for his streamer to grow? Mine has been with me for a few weeks and his streamer has grown about an inch. Not sure if that is fast or not...

Rgonzalez(whats your name?) mine grows his to say 8 inches or so then it breaks. Only takes mines a coulpe of days to get a few inches on it. They are all different though. Yours looks healthy so dont worry.

Speed-they are all different. Mine is fine. No nipping in his first year with me but maybe some more experienced MI keepers could chime in? PaulB is the guy to tell you about idols.

My name is Ramon :) I'm sure his streamer will grow, he was stressed with the new tank so I'm sure that stunted the growth. He started eating the New Spectrum Pellets I put in the tank and now he's eating the Formula 2 flakes. He's a friggin eating machine.

Speed: I think I read somewhere they can demolish zoa's. I've also read they like LPS that are green and/or red. However, mine hasn't touched my huge frogspawn or bubble coral - both green. So I'd say it is gonna depend on the fish, and how you'd feel if you came home and he was devouring on your zoa's. Me personally, if I came home to see him munching on my corals, I wouldn't be to upset. It's easier to get LPS then it is to successfully keep a MI.

Hi Ramon.:beer:It's easier to get LPS then it is to successfully keep a MI.

Very true.
Ramon, i've recomended your tank rockwork to someone in the general forum because i think its so good. I like that look. I dont have any pics of mine i can put on here yet.
Have a look-i think he could do alot with his tank.
Is that a duncan near your nem?

Do you notice that when the lights are out, the fish swimming around your tank in the dark is the idol?

Richie,

Thanks for the kind words. My old tank has a TON of rockwork, so with this one, I decided to cut back and try to create a more open area for swimming. I also wanted taller rocks to create a "open" look. I have ideas to make it look better, but that will come later down the road.

Where did you recommend? I will go take a gander.

Definitely post up your pictures; I always like to see other tanks!

I did notice that "Tyson" my MI is the only one that is swimming around when the lights are out. He's such an active fish I now realize why MI's need so much food. Tonight I did notice a small white dot on his left fin. Maybe a little bit of ich, but he's eating like a horse and I'm not too worried. Also tonight has been the first time that he has come up to the glass to watch me watching him - which is why I noticed it. It was awesome!!

Did you ever notice any ich on your MI?

Cheers Richie!

Thanks for the shout out! I'm thinking of moving some pieces around on the left side of the tank. Like you said, I like more room and open spaces for fish to swim and current to move. Less detrius problems as well.

Well the next day, the little white spots were gone. So maybe it was a little ich or maybe not. He eats like a horse, so I don't worry about it.

Aquascaping is perpetual. That's the beauty of this hobby, there is never a final destination. There is always something that we will tweak or shift. It's can be the bane of your hobby unless you recognize that there is no light at the end of the tunnel - just more saltwater :)

BTW: My Idol's streamer is growing quite rapidly and he's got a nice fat belly. Let's hope he stays that way!
