The Moorish Idol Thread

The NLS pellets should help color the MI up. I like feeding the 2 or 3 mm pellets rather than the small ones as the fish gets more food and their beak is plenty large enough.

I have 3 and planning to add more all are starting to eat pellets
It's only been a month

When they do well after few months I will transfer them to the big tank
Any pointers?

Nice "small" tank and nice selection of fish.

Feed your MIs a lot and a good variety, including nori and spirulina algae, plus a good selection of meaty foods. Also offer them some sponge (ON Angel Formula). They tend to eat a lot.

Keep a good eye on them is case they start fighting. Also, watch in case the pbt starts hassling them as they are related to the tang family.

PBT is definitely the king of this Fowlr tank . I am tempted to put it in the main tank later on to see if he can defend himself against my larger Achilles.
I am just worry about stress both out and start a ick outbreak again.

Anyway I feed them sponges, pellets and large mysis so far so good the smaller one have a little cloudy eyes but it's eating very well.

No fighting yet that's why I am tempted to buy 2 more.

I bought mine from a memebr on here, he had it for awhile and it was fat and healthy in his tank. Now it is mine and it eats like a pig, hasn't taken to pellets as that is a food I feed my tank daily. But it eats Nori like crazy and the mysis, angels and butterfly formula, emrald green entree, and angel formula. I try to vary it as much as possible. Going to try some fresh clam or oyster this weekend.

Many years ago I had a MI. It was one of my favorite fish. After finishing my basement I'm going to restock my 125 reef tank. I want sps and a MI. What do you guys think? Or will it pick at the sps to much. I hav a perc, 6 green cromis a small blue tang and a royal gamma. Currently I have no coral just live rock and recently put in a few of the fish. tanks been up and running for 12 years. How about a large sqaumosa?

I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread. I am a new member and have been continually impressed with the vast amount of information on this forum.

I have had my idol for just over a year now and he is without question my favorite fish. He was eating at the lfs and has never looked back. They just got a new shipment from Hawaii and of course there are some great looking idols in stock. I am really tempted to pick up another one so that I have a "pair", but I'm curious to hear what others think. The new idol would be a bit bigger than my current guy, but I figured that might not be a bad thing. I have one on hold at the moment and he is eating Hikari mysis.

Thoughts?

Several folks tried multiple idols on this thread. One guy even tried 4, but in the end the idols would beat up on each other.

What other fishes do you have in your 240?

Currently I have the Idol, a French Angel, a Purple Tang, a 4-eyed Butterfly, and a blue devil. I had a Flame angel too, but haven't seen it in a while. I have an adult Coris Wrasse coming, if my friend can ever catch it from his tank.

I tend to keep my tanks lightly stocked. It works out better for the fish, and also helps with power failures and such. Although I do want to put a couple more fish in there.

What size is your tank? Personally, I wouldn't add the second one to my tank even though I would love a pair. If my current one (or the other) got beat up, I would be heart broken. I really love my fishes, and am very scared to add something that might now work out for them.

I currently have had my MI for about 6+ months with SPS, and not one issue. I think if you keep it well fed (at least 3 feedings per day), then you shouldn't have to worry.

Agreed with the others... unless you have a HUGE tank, more than one MI is more likely than not going to end in losing one or both fish. I'd stick with one...

Great to hear everyone's MIs are doing well!

My Moorish Idol was a model citizen for about 6 months. Then out of nowhere, it began eating zoas. It cleaned out all my zoas over several weeks. So, my point is that relative to corals it may behave or not. I no longer have corals in the MI tank, so it is no longer an issue.

Thanks for the input everyone, I'm going to hold off. Maybe when I get a bigger tank i'll add another, I have a 120 and the more I think about it, that's no where near big enough for both of those fish. I have plans to increase to 210 in the near future, but i'l'l be waiting until then. It's so tempting when you see one of these fish eating in captivity.

Hey Everyone,

Coming up on 5 months with my MI. He's definitely turned into the boss of the tank, and seems to have first dibs on anything that goes into the tank.

Still feeding the tank plenty... 3 times a day (once in the morning at about 7am/once when I get home from work at about 5:30pm/once before the lights go out around 8pm) with my frozen concoction of scallops, various shrimps, clams, Formula 2, 2 different angel formulas (that supposedly include sponge) and garlic soaked NLS/Form1/Form2 pellets. I also have an auto-feeder that feeds NLS pellets at 1pm every day.

So here he is... don't mind the mess on the sandbed, was in the middle of re-arranging some stuff when I grabbed my phone for some pics.
