The Moorish Idol Thread

Have you started medicating the tank with PraziPro, Cupramine or any other medications? They are known to also suppress appetite.

Yes, started prazipro just yesterday. The moorish idol stopped eating a day before that. I thought maybe something was bothering the fish and the medication might help. Have not started cupramine and will hold off until I can figure a way to get the moorish idol to eat again.

Any updates? Many medications suppress a fishes appetite. I wouldn't start treating a QT until the fish is eating well. Maybe the Yellow Tangs are bothering the Idol? Hope it works out.

All the fish in QT are getting along great. This is the 3rd week. One more week and I am moving them to the DT. The moorish idol was not touching the food for what seems to be a week. The past couple of days, it started to nibble on mysis shrimp again. Sometime, it will eat nori as well. The idol is not eating as aggressively as when I first got it, but seems to be looking at food again.

Are these guys really hard to keep? I love the challenge of a expert level fish butt not if I go through all the work for it to just die?

This is the first MI for me. And for me this guy is very easy to keep! Just give him alot of foods and he is healthy and lucky. The key is to get a healthy specimen. Most MI's ive seen in the stores were in very poor condition.

So, get a healthy one and QT it. Then give him lots of different foods and you will be happy with your MI imo.

Just bought a moorish idol today. Its been at the LFS for one week and was eating roe and NLS pellets. He's in quarantine and is going to be treated with cupramine and prazipro. This moorish idol is from quality marine. Im hoping he gets along well with my regal angel and all my butterflies. The one Im most worried about is my Heniochus acuminatus. If the moorish idol doesn't get along with him, I guess the wimplefish will be going in one of my other tanks.

I took these in Hawaii a few months ago and just figured I would put them here.

This one was in Tahiti.

Seems as if there were enough urchins to make anyone want to avoid those rocks...

As for my moorish idol, he's currently chowing down on NLS. Seems interested in nori, but no test bite yet. He hasn't lost his appetite with the cupramine and prazipro in the water though.

Unpleasant update. My moorish idol seems to have gone off all food. Doesn't seem interested in anything. Im going to try a clam when I get home from class today. Also going to do a 100% water change, to remove the medication from the water a full dose of both cupramine and prazipro, which were ramped up slowly (half the doing recommendations on the bottle). It also seems as though his streamer and a small portion of his tail find is eroding. No other fish are in the quarantine with him. No ammonia present, but his heater malfunctioned yesterday. Came home and found the quarantine at almost 90 degrees! Not only that, but I got a rather unpleasant shock when I reached in the tank to turn the heater down, didn't think it was malfunctioning. I really hope my idol pulls through.

I hate Cupramine. It's too hard to control and so many fish are sensitive to it. I've had great success with formalin dips for crypto and prazipro for worms. I've been meaning to try out chloroquine as others have had great success with that for crypto and it's well tolerated. Cupramine is a sledge hammer. I avoid it at all costs.

After a water change and removing the heater the idol seems to be doing much better. Ate a couple NLS pellets today and devoured some oyster ova. He even ate some banana. Find regression seems to have stopped as well. I think he's on the road to recovery.

Just a note I would not dose 2 meds at the same time, both are for parsites and both are powerfull. It almost sounds like an over dose. I'm with h2so4hursts I do not like copper perfer hypo. I do use prazipro for de-worming.

I think it is common to treat both Cupramine and Prazi-pro at the same time. I have done it myself without issues.

I've actually done it on all my fish without problems before this idol. I think the problem with him was the faulty heater though. Removed the heater and he's back to chowing on food, and his fin is coming back.

I've had my Idol for about 9 months now. Hes really fat and has a nice streamer but the the only thing hell eat is pellets (NLS, Formula 1) and nori. Id like to get his diet varied more. Anyone have any suggestions on getting him to eat frozen food?
