The Moorish Idol Thread

About 2 months ago I bought 2. One was clearly eating at the shop the other mouthed food but not with much conviction. I brought home both after reading that in the wild they generally pair up. Also this worked with my CBB. One taught the other the eat. Didn't have as much luck the the MI pair. One is doing fantastic. Has regrown his streamer and put on weight. The other didn't make it

I kept 2 for 7 months. Got along great. Until 7 months and a day. Then all hell broke loose. I had to remove one immediately to prevent it killing the smaller. Not a great idea, in hindsight :)

i do not know of any forced pairings that have worked. only buy two that are a known bonded pair. and the tank would have to be large for this to happen with success.

Agreed. This was a random 2 from a box of 4. I had hoped maybe I had some sort of odds that they were actually a pair :)

Lost mine a few weeks ago after 8-9 years. One of the best eating fish I ever had. LFS got me a new one and is eating nori and flake now.

LARGE ANGELS... I am really sorry to hear that it just recently died , on you.Any fish that is nine years old,has an effect on you when it dies. I am certain that it is rare for anyone to have kept their Moorish Idol (s)as long as you have.I know they are a very likeable fish personality wise.
As far as pairing goes,I understand that identifying whether they are males or females is difficult.

I think it was a bacterial infection from a cut. There was a cut on the side that looked like it was from one of the tangs. I couldn't catch it to treat buy it looked like it was healing and closed up. Still eating like a pig. Then all of the sudden I see it between some rocks breathing hard and the area swollen and it was dead by the next morning.

my wife wanted a tang and thats why i told her no.

I've never had a problem before and most of the fish have been together for a long time.

fish are like people, the older they get the grumpier they get ! I had a 14 year old maroon clown with mine for 5 weeks and all was fine. and than the clown started chasing the idol. the clown was removed the next day.

Ive had mine for just over a week and it is doing great, eating like a pig. I cant believe how fast its streamer is growing. I was just wondering in nature what the purpose of the streamer is? The only thing I could think of would possibly be a distraction for predators?
thanks
Jeff

I've had my MI 8 weeks now. He is in the DT and eating food in the water column. I think he is going to make it!
