The Moorish Idol Thread

I do not name fish.... but I do name by Birds and turtles... nameing fish in an aquarium is like nameing a painting on the wall.. aquariums are living art... you dont call that picture of the fruit basket on the wall george do you? LOL!... so thats why I dont name my fish! HAHA~ [/B]

Well, does your picture move? do you feed your picture? can your picture get a disease? does your picture show various behaviors? does your picture attack other pictures? does your picture change colors?

hehe pictures and fish are very different, I don't name my fish for the most part either, however I think they are hardly comparable to art, just my 2 cents.

So Pictures are art... and yes some pictures move.. or appear to! :)

however I think they are hardly comparable to art

Crazy, please do not be so strong in posting your opinions in such a way that your trying to state a FACT instead of your opinions...

An AQUARIUM is LIVING ART.... that is my view of it... I was compairing LIVING ART to just plain ART....

Meaning I was looking at Reef Keeping / Fish Keeping as a form of LIVING ART... or just art.....

I see your point of view... Fish are alive and thats why some name them.... and they are IN YOUR OPINION not compairable to Pictures...

In MY OPINION, fish are not compairable to art as a single... but combined with the Aquairum the WHOLE because LIVING ART... you see my point of view now?

Yes, Fish are your pets, yes they are alive... and YES they are LIVING ART if you look at it the way I look at it! :)

Sorry. It was not meant to be stated as a fact, but my oppinion. I was just showing you the difference between pictures and fish. Therefore they are not comparable if they have about.. 15 differences. I do look at it as living art, but not comparble to "naming my picture bob" haha don't take offense to what i say, im usually always just jokin around :P

New pictures of my Idol! Here they are:

He looks great and is still doing well. His body is round and full. He eats until he can't eat anymore. His "spine line" is no longer visible. And his banner is long and thick. And he has most certainly grown since I have had him. All good signs so far.

Now everyone else needs to post some updated pictures of your Idols as well!!

Oh yeah... and there is a hurricane comming our way again!! Its weak though, and we now have a HUGE generator that will power half the house. So there is no danger of me losing any fish this year. Hopefully everything will be ok.

Now I'm really confused!

So, an aquarium to some, cannot be compared to a picture, a.k.a. "art." If you take a picture of your aquarium, does it then transform into "art," and if it was once a "living art," and it becomes a picture, a.k.a. "art," is it now dead?

If art is indeed timeless, and Moorish Idols are indeed delicate, and impossible to keep (according to some), my recommendation would be to take a picture of your "living art," thus increasing it's lifespan indefinitely (assuming you use acid-free paper). ;)

Zfunk, your pictures, a.k.a. "art," are fantastic. That's a beautiful Idol, and tank for that matter:)

Hi everyone. I have read this thread since the beginning and I think its great. I don't have an idol so I did not think I would contribute much. That was until yesterday. I went to the Maui Ocean Center and saw a tank with 20-30 Idols in it. Yes it was very large. I doubt that all of these fish were newly collected and I bet that they have some advice they could give.

Zfunk, that is one beautiful fish. I have my tank all messed up because I am trying to catch a foxface. I removed some rock front to back so I can put in a plexiglass barrier when that fish goes over to the left side. My Idol is not happy with all the demolition. Since I am working late every night I can't give him Selcon every day and it shows. He is relying on mostly pellets, and I really don't like feeding those every day. In a week this job will be over and I can give him more attention again.
Good luck with yours.
Paul

Thanks for the info sunfishh! I will most certainly look into that. They could be a wealth of information.

That made me think also, I haven't been to sea world in years. I may take a trip up there at some point and see if they have any Idols anywhere. Also there is the living sea at Epcot Center. Interesting thoughts.

Sorry to hear your tank is a mess Paul. I had to do that a few weeks ago to my 110 FO tank. I had a bunch of fish with fungus so I had to get them out and put them in quarantine. I think I eventually took almost every rock out before I caught them. Quite a mess. Hope everything turns out ok.

I had the foxface right where I wanted him. I cleared a place in the tank on the left side from front to back so I could insert a piece of plexiglass in there to partition that side. I had him trapped and I took out all the rocks in the partitioned area so I could get a net in there. He jumped over the partition and on the way stung me in the thumb that was holding the plexiglass.
Dam, those things hurt. He got me with only one dorsal spine and it was so light that I didn't think it broke the skin, but 30 seconds later, it hit me. I soaked it in very hot water like you would for a lion fish sting and in a half an hour it is not too bad. Without hot water the pain keeps building. All is fine now except I still did not catch the foxface and I have to wait for him to feel comfortable going back to that side.

Therefore they are not comparable if they have about.. 15 differences.

Crazy.... If they have 1 simularity, or compairing factor... they are indeed comparable... all it takes is ONE... which I have already stated... now this conversation is NO LONGER OPINION but more of a debate between the belief that Aquariums are living art!

Paul sorry to hear about your getting stung, if its anything like a lion sting then it hurts plenty. Keep an eye out for redness around the area or any numbness. If you see that or feel funny take it seriously and go to the doc. A friend of mine had a reaction to the venom of his lion and ended up with the skin of his finger turning black and a HUGE hole, not to mention about 3 weeks of antibiotics. And it could have been worse with him needing to stay in hospital for IV antibiotics. When I got stung all I had was the pain and a couple of antihistamines. But you never know if you are severely allergic or not till you are.

Sorry to hear you got stung and your fish got away Paul! I guess giving your Moorish Idol more room is more difficult than you anticipated. Catching fish in a fish tank is tough (I know it do it for a living right now lol).

I have been stung multiple times by Lionfish and Foxface and never really had much of a reaction. I know that if you are allergic though, it can put you in the hospital.

Well we weathered the hurricane with not so much as even a power outage! Can't say the same for our friends down in extreme southern Florida and the panhandle who are going to get it bad in the next few days. My thoughts are with them.

Back to the topic of this thread, post some more pictures of your Idols everyone!! I want to see them!!!

YEAHH!!! your still here! hahaa!!!
