The Moorish Idol Thread

Hey guys, its been a while since I posted, but have been following along, the idol I had died, but since then, I have been pursueing the 210 gal tank which should be here in a couple of days. I had since gotten another small idol which is currently being held in the 55 until the 210 is ready. The new idol looks great, nut is not eating as heartily as the previous one. I had to get live clam, open it and place it in the tank, and it went nuts for it. Since then, he toys a little more with the bring shrinp and mysis. It ate my sunburst coral. I am on the lookout for sponge. Has any of your idols eaten tree sponge?

Thanks for the tip yoboyjdizz. However, I am officially a retailer now so I have my licence to buy wholesale. I can get 180 gallon tanks for around $350 or $400 (when I checked out the one in the paper I was looking for a really good deal). So it's all about whether I feel like paying for a new tank. But I could always use the 110 my Idol is in now for more storage.

Chisel! Nice to see you posting again! Sorry to hear your first Idol died :(. What happend to him anyway? Keep trying with the new one and feed him everything you can. That is the key to getting them healthy.

I don't vary the food much for my Idol anymore. I used to feed him upwards of 10 different kinds of food weekly. Now he eats the spectrum pellets twice a day and munches on sponge, blue legs and turbo snails as well when he feels like it. I also put a little caulerpa in once in a while, him and the Regal Angel love that stuff.

Glad to hear your Idol is still doing well Paul. Sounds like it's time to upgrade your tank :).

the first idol and others fell victem to an major ich outbreak, I lost control of the water parameters. Too much "life" stuff happening, (dad fell ill and passed), actually the new tank is being set up in his honor as he was an avid fisherman, and loved the ocean.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, been there and its rough. Good luck on the tank in his memory. Hope we'll get to see pics when it's up.

weird thing I tried this morning to get the new idol to eat the formula 2, I smooshed a defrosted cube of formula 2 and angel formula on a clamshell, spread it so that the clam had a coat on the entire inside surface, and put it in the microwave for about 11 seconds, (Oh Man, what a terrible smell) when I put it in the tank, it was the liveliest rush for food I have seen out of the idol since I got it. I will try it again tonight to make sure it wasn't just a fluke. I will definitely take pics when the tank gets here

My Idol is eating like pig. What a great fish. I am going to put him in my main display this week. Has anyone tried a pair of Idols or added an opposite sex Idol?

I also saw my Idol pick a small bristle worm out of my gravel and eat him. Has anyone seen this before? i am going to spend some time watching to see if it happens again.

mine picks at most things in the tank . but i have never seen mine eat a b. worm .

btw..... mine is 3 yrs old with me this month. its in a fish only tank.
i moved him into a bigger tank a month ago . a darn tomato clown really picked on the idol. sad cuz chewed some fin before i could figure on which fish was causeing the problem.

My Idol also eats worms and anything else. I also have a clown, a fire clown that enjoys chewing the fins off the moorish Idol including the tips of his tail and his dorsal. If the clown was not so old (about 10) I would give it away. Mine is about two and a half.

wow!!! you have a tank up since the early 70s??
nice!! i thought i was the only one with tanks up for so long!!
i have many that have been up since late 80s and early 90s!!

its a shame that a clown can effect such a rarely kept alive idol!!!

My Idol is in my frag tank, 35 gal. I will be putting him in my 125g in a few days. He eats great, and does not pick at my corals, so far. Will see what happesns in the big tank with plenty more sps, and soft corals for him. This thread is great, It really has helped me understand this fish.

Thnx Paul. It is cool to read about your 30 years of experience in the hobby. My Idol is growing his banner back. it is almost a half inch in the last 3 days. It looks like they can get 6" long. he is not picking on any of my corals, but I think he likes to "play with my Crocea's. I am going to put him in my main disply that has a few more soft corals species than my 35. I hope they don't like sinularia.

the 210 is set up, and the fish are in, what a change in the idol's behavior, it seems so much more comfortable, it (for the first time) pecked my hand when I was adjusting rock. I heard good things about spectrum foods for idol's nutrition, I'll try to find some this week, I also had picked up purple seaweek (which it likes), anyway, when I can figure out how to properly post pictures, I'll do so...........

My new "idol" after about ten weeks. He eats pellet from Formula one, Formula two, two kind of Kent pellet and a few kind of frozen food.
