The most clowns ever!

I know, I know, only two clowns to a tank is preached like the gospel here on RC. *But* I want to know how many of you have had success with more than two, and if so how many 5? 7? 10?!?! And what species? Try to be as informative as possible i.e. when introduced, how big when purchased, tank size... and all that good stuff.

4 - 2 normal occelaris, 2 black occelaris

got one no worries at all, stayed with their own colour mate, hung out together, all were added as small juv's and never had any issues till a hitch hiking octopus chased 2 of em outa my tank at night.

Not even in a 750 gallon or 3000 gallon tank! My old boss tried 20 & 30. they slowly picked each other off till there was only 5. Took about 6 months though.

Really that is suprising, in the wild they can be found in large groups together. I would think the 750 would be plenty, and the 3000 they would barley see eachother. How many other fish in these tanks?

we have a guy that comes in with a very large ritteri, a few bubbles and 8 false percs. one female and one dominant male. All seem to get along fine.

trick apparently is to get them all as unsexed juvi's and see what happens

I agree on the idea of buying unsexed juvi's.

I have five Onyx clowns in a hex tank, including two older and three young, all purchased from Rod-Reef at the same time.

In my 180, I have two adult Onyx and two Picassos. They were purchased at different times and skirmished for a few weeks before they calmed down.

If I were to do it again, I would not try to mix older clowns! :)

One user nearby has 27 or so juvies in a 210g clown/anemone tank. I don't know how it is doing but she had good success for a few months at least. They all came from a single nest and were never kept separately.

Well, Okay......... so this doesn't count, since it's Rod's own Juvi system, but here's a couple of photos of LOTs of Onyx Clowns:

Obviously, he's rearing them for reefers, but it's cool to see!

Well... it was fish only tanks, no anem's for them... lots of fish!
I'm sorry....I type to fast... the 3000 I think had around 10 left.

They would all gang up on one fish after another and beat the crap out of it. These were all regular Ocellaris adults.

I believe juvi's are the only ones found in groups in the wild, once they mature they find a mate and leave to a nearby anem.

My dad kept adult clowns: a clarki, a maroon, and a percula together in a 70 gallon reef with a half dozen other fish and many corals. The clarki lived in a carpet anenome, the percula lived in a sebae anenome, and the maroon lived in a long tentacle anenome. The rock work was fashioned into twin arches with 3 columns. He positioned the anenomes so none of the clowns could see each other unless they swam up to the top. This worked as long as the anenomes stayed put. But even with MH lighting and a surge-type flow every few months one would move around to where the clowns had line of sight and they would fight again. But the clowns would leave off chases when they felt they had left their territory so in principle it is possible.

I have a pair of percs in a gigantea carpet and a chrysopterus x sandaracinos pair in a Merten's carpet on opposite ends of a 60 gal. tank.

ReeferMO85, I bought a pair of them shortly after they were introduced by ORA. A friend set up as a LFS with them and sold them to me at his cost. He told me he'd kill me if I told!!! :D

I've seen them at anywhere from $125 - $200 for a pair, but most ORA dealers have a long waiting list.

Good luck!

its all about supply and demand!

ppl will pay the inflated cost if it seems they are waiting to get something rare. AND not much competition helps, i dunno a whole lot about all these tank raised clowns in the US but if its only been in the last few years that these fish have been avaialble tank raised by such organisations i would have thought theres not that many breeding aged pairs out there to compete for the market. There will be someday tho, and they know this so if they kept back and paired up 200 fish to sell on they would destroy their market in 2 years time.

i would have thought the ppl who grow these monitor these forums and the hype we create simply does their marketing for them!!

by the way those pics are so cool.. im jelous as.

and lol, i think i can count 100, so times that by $100 each fish and... oh my god thats a good investment!!!!

in a 60gallon i had two pairs of percs residing in rbta's on opposite sides. since they rarely left the area near the rbta, their paths never crossed or if they did see each other, the distance was too far apart. that worked well for me until i tore down the tank.

now that i have a cube tank, i'm not sure how well that would work. haven't tried it yet.
