the new ORA Bird of Paradise Seriatopora

All this hateing on ora..thats crazy..to each there own..i can never pay for some of these le 3/4 in for 80-100..atleast ora stuff is over a inch and 70-and under...some people dont even know what ora is and when they see a new(old) coral thats the first for them

well heres another thing i have noticed.i wont mention any names here but some on line stores sell a frag of a LE acropora that was cut the day it was shipped or a day or two prior.IME a frag that is not fully encrusted does not have the survival rate of one that is.also it takes some time for it to encrust before any verticle growth occurs so you are paying for a frag that may or may not survive and you are looking at a couple months for it to encrust even if it does.ORA stuff has a good survival rate in my tanks.out of about 30 ora frags i have only lost one.i wish i could say the same for the other LE acroporas i have bought.

$70 and under is allot better than the ORA prices in my area. more like $90-$110 (hawkins echinata, dustins deepwater, phils granulosa, red planet, pearlberry, borealis, etc.).....like on LiveAquaria

makes you wonder, since you see the same frags at other places (LFS and online stores) for half the price.......whether ORA sells different prices to different stores, or the LFS are just trying to capitalize on ORA's popularity.

They have a standard price sheet. Some stores that do big numbers may get breaks but it all starts at the same price point...

its the fish shop that makes the price .. like said above the prices as set on the page they send to shops...some of them are cheaper in 3s but thats about it

I haven't bought any ORA after the red planet because I was sick of their prices, even at my LFS. I can get nicer more rare corals for the same price at other places and then I don't have the same cookie cutter corals as every other reefer.

Where are you guys seeing some of these frags for half the usual ORA price. I haven't seen very many frags in the 30$-40$ category that are as nice as ORA's high end corals. A big selling point for me is the consistency in color from ORA. You know what you're getting and size. All my frags have been pretty good sized and a lot are completely encrusted on the plug. ORA sells quality at a fair price. You can't ask for much more than that.

Is it just me, or does that NOT look like a Seriotopora sp.? The polyps are not in neat straight rows like a Seriotopora sp is.

To me it looks like a Stylophora sp.

This is the sickest one I've seen. I have a small colonly and have seen the mother colony in person (it is not quite as vivid as this pic, but damn close). It's sick....

And where is my frag...

Also guys, keep in mind that all of these corals have to start from somewhere. I have heard that they pick up corals in trade shows over in europe. So even thought they may be new to us others have seen them before. Can't fault them if there is a market for it. If I could fly to Germany and other places to pick up stuff that isn't common in the states. I'd make a market for it as well.

Now Now......Not everybody has a LFS down the street. So to get these things they have to pay a higher price. Feel good if you are one of the lucky ones.....I sure do.

So stop bashing the prices. It's called free market and everybody is free to buy or sell anything for what they want or what they can get. If you don't agree that's your opinion. So lay off a bit! I don't agree either but I don't even look at those places for corals.

Way to go man, great attitude!!!

I will be the first to say a lot of the time I don't understand the big deal with some of the hype on these, but they are providing a product that answers those complaints about supply and quality most brought up when the LE word was mentioned.

Are these pieces your garden variety....no. Are they the most unique and crazy.....again no. But they are in the middle of this and allows the average reefer, perhaps just starting out, access to some interesting pieces without the need for waitlists or networking with other reefers.

Now someone nowhere near a good LFS, or a wholesaler or even another reefer has the opportunity to get a respectible collection going. And if that gets you into SPS and gets you excited and participating here, sharing your intrest.......more power to you!!!

Just don't think your going to "cash in" by farming this stuff as its market values will drop as availability obviously exponetially increases with this type of marketing. This is a luxury hobby, and not a necesity in life. If you can't afford it, perhaps you should consider collecting something else.........to even debate the cost takes the fun out of it.

So leave it out.

I got the Aussie delicate for $38 at the same time. I went from no LFS's carrying ORA to two in a month. Needless to say I'm pretty stoked. I would assume that the further a store is way from ORA the more the shipping is. I would imagine. Also if your LFS is charging the same as the online guys then they have people willing to pay the price or they are willing to sit and stare at a bunch of higher priced ORA frags! And we all know the diverden guys are getting a better price from ORA than the small LFS owner. So they are really banking on their sales. But most importantly their frags seem to get bought relatively quick. Even with the shipping charge to boot.

PM me and I can get you some info of my LFS's if anyone is interested.

I don't care who I get it from or what it's called. I will be looking for a frag of this. I love birdsnest coral and have never seen one like this in my area.

It's a quite common coral here in Europe (in good LFS or online stores) , it's a Seriatopora guttatus (very similar to the S.caliendrum) .

Here are 2 pics of mine
