The OFFICIAL Classroom Reef Build Thread!

Tom,

Gary M. has recommended "ORA Glow" brand pellets in the past, so I've used those. I actually mix them with Ocean Nutrition Formula 1 and Formula 2 pellets in my autofeeder at home.

Latest developments with the aquarium:

To date, the chiller hadn't kicked on, and in fact, read a steady 72*F since it was online. I'm a science teacher, but that does not permanently exempt me from "nitwit" status.

You may recall how the return came from the prep room with a wye going to the chiller:

Well, I seemed to forget that the water will take the path of least resistance. In this case, the water simply traveled through the dual 2" returns to the display and did not bother to go through the 1" plumbing to the chiller and back.

I rectified this today by putting reducer bushings and locline on the dual returns. (I actually first attempted with some eductors I had laying around at home, but they were too close to the surface and would suck air through a vortex every minute or so. I may tinker some more with these.)

The fish are doing well thus far. I never had a quarantine setup at home, and am enjoying the opportunities to focus solely on the fish in QT, rather than the tank as a whole. The first couple of days after their arrival, the anthias would dart into the PVC caves any time I entered the prep room. At this point, they seemed to have learned that when that big goofy humanoid gets near the tank, food appears shortly thereafter. The male, who was really skittish from the get-go, has come out of his shell and is feeding as robustly as the harem.

The kids are really taking an interest in the snails and hermits in the tank, and always are asking if they can go in the prep room and see the fish.
Good stuff... :)

Looks good Scott! It's gotta be really exciting to finally use it as a teaching tool on class. Great idea on having the students research what goes next into the tank too!

Also- HUGE thanks to Tim at ABC Reefs for the tanks and Henry Colf for the man-sized frags!!! It's the generosity of folks like this that are making this project an awesome reality for the kids.

Kudos!!!!

Scott, no problem at all. I enjoyed meeting you ,and passing it forward for the children's enjoyment and to help them learn is an honor.

Hopefully Scott, you can get a few more local reefers to donate some frags for a good cause. With the holidays approaching most people are more giving for a good cause.
