The REAL Names Of These ORA Frags...

Got a couple ORA frags here that I'd love to have identified. The first one they call a Chip's Acro:

The second one was sold as an Austrailan Delicate although I don't even see that name on their website.

Any information about the care and placement of these two would also be much appreciated. And finally, does anyone have any large, established colonies of either that they would care to post?

Thanks in advance.

The chips I have medium in my tank and does well. I would put it in a decent area of flow and it should take off. I've never heard of the second one but I haven't heard of many of the ORA stuff.

By the way the chips looks like it is light in color...might put down lower...not bleached but looks light.

IMO

Michael-
Not sure on the species of either, but my Chip's I've had for about a year and it has gone from a frag like yours to about a 5 inch diameter colony. It grows in a tabling form, similar to A.Hyacinthus, branches close together and very bushy polyps. This one I have about 7 inches below water surface, total of about 15" from the lights(3x250wDE14KAquaconnects, it sits right between two of them, so it is getting hammered with light). It gets really good flow from one of my returns, plus a Sea Swirl. It has developed nice deep blue on the branch ends and is quite a bit darker than your picture.

The Australian Delicate I have heard of, but do not have. I wonder if perhaps it was one of the corals that they lost a lot of due to the hurricanes? I know that there are some species that took quite a hit in their facilities. Regardless, I haven't seen it offered for sale in a while. Other than the obvious thin branch+low flow theory, I'd say you got a nice one there!

I have both, The Chips is VERy close to A. Plana. I also posted a pic of my Chips colony on the ID thread that Chris from RM is answering and he ID'd it as A. Plana also. The delicate is actually referred to as "ORA Australian Delicate Stag" though it looks nothing like a stag in my opinion. Grows very quickly and super thin branches. I have a piece near the bottom of the tank and one at the top under 2 x 400w xm 20k. They both open their polyps fully during the day but the one on bottom has longer PE, one on top has more intense neon green polyps. They seem to love high flow. Heres a link to some of Dustin Dortons pics(ORA) that I stumbled across. Youll see the Chips and Delicate stag if you look carefully.

Thanks, everyone, for the info and kind words. I'm in the process of doing my monthly website update (which I now do quarterly sometimes), and this was very much needed.

SPStoner - would you have a pic of your Ora Chips you could post by chance? I'm curious about the color of yours (under Phoenix 14k bulbs) compared to mine (under AquaConnect 14k) Mine is real green with green polyps and purple tips, looks nothing like the frag posted by 64Ivy or the Chips shown on the site linked by Stoney Mahony (and I am positive mine came directly from Ora) I'll try to get a pic of mine this evening.

Mine are under Aquaconnects, too (I need to change my profile)

But my colony also looks different. Here are a few pictures I took today. the color photographs more purple, but it definitely has a blueish tint to the naked eye.

Mine has a much more open growth pattern than your does even though mine gets plenty of flow (polyps are always whipping around anyway  ) Cheap camera, no photography skills but this will give you an idea of the difference in color.

I'm convinced that there are two versions of ORA "Chips" circulating, one "pre-hurricane" and another "post hurricane". 64Ivy's looks like it came from a colony "before the storm".

Mine (pre-hurricane) is directly under 400w Hamilton, top 'o the tank, max flow area. Purple tips under the Hamilton, more of a teal when I had the XM 10k.

I think Chips is A. Horrida

Here's a pic 2 years from a similar sized frag...

Hey Tony,
I see you got those DE 250/14 K's Aquaconnects.Who sells these bulbs now?Aquaristics doesn't have them, and was told may never have them. And Premium Aquatics said they don't,that the Phoneix 14 K replace them. But for the life of me,looked everywhere for them.Where we you able to score at?Glad to see someone is running them, beside me.But need to replace bulbs now.
Thanks for your help.

I have one of these as well and I think I've narrowed it down to:
Acropora jacquelineae
http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/701-800/Species pages/713.htm

Acropora subglabra
http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/001-100/Species pages/72.htm

Acropora speciosa
http://whelk.aims.gov.au/coralsearch/html/701-800/Species pages/791.htm

I've had mine directly under a 250w Phoenix 14k (mid level) and high flow for 3 weeks so far. It's grown a bit since then so I'm assuming that it likes the spot.

The chip's is basically a long polyped A. horrida. You're real lucky to have gotten those- they just came available (especially the Chip's) a couple of days now and stores are very limited to the number they can get!

The australian delicate staghorn is probably the A. speciosa though it's very hard to tell. I don't think it needs to direct light, it's very much a deepwater coral.

Good luck with those, those are beautiful and the best choice you can go with for buying corals!

I miss my ORA frags bad, esp. the chips. I wish I could take hurricane katrina by the throat and choke her as I gaze into her fading eyes. Sorry, whew. Back to reality. :|

hey Curt, I actually bought them last year ( from both PA and Aquaristics) but took them out after only a month to test out some other bulbs. I kinda forgot I had them until recently and eecided to throw em back in. From mmy own experiences, the Phoenix is the exact same bulb. To the naked eye, and in all the tests I have read, they appear to be the same or super close (and considerably less $$$)

As for the Chips - Not sure about the Horrida ID... never seen a tabling Horrida, but I could be wrong.

For the last year they have been steadily coming into our LFS's here in AZ.

They usually get 4 chips each order along with many others
