The Sebae anemone

RockinSmall

Keepin it Spicey
Everyone around my area keeps bubble tip anemones. I would like to try a sebae. Any suggestions on how to properly care for this if it is different then ur typical bubble tip. Fill me in on any details i should know. thanks

Ive had 1 for about 7 weeks. Seems to like low flow and lower light then my old RTBA did. Also seems to like the base of my rock at the sand, rather then holes in the rock like my rtba did.

Just my observations so far. Havent had it long enough to say for sure what it likes.

The key to keeping Sebae is finding a healthy one to begin with, most of what is offered is either bleached of dyed.

If it's yellow its dyed and if its white its bleached, thier natural color is a tan/brown.

As nbrice1 said, they like to bury their foot in the sand at the rock interface. They are a little less forgiving than BTA but once settled, can be quite hardy. They also get huge, I would hope you plan to put this in your 75g?

I wouldn't not assume it likes lower flow or light (mine stay exactly where I first put them under very bright mh lighting (overdriven 250 w DE bulbs), but H. crispas do attach through sand to something solid (like a rock or the tank bottom). They won't usually stay on rocks.

Heavy light/flow seems to be the call for them IME.
Only thing is looking at your sig, not sure what tank you plan to put it in.
They get pretty big, my crispa tapped out at 24", and will sting what sps it touches.

Hmm everything I read before I got mine said this. Mine moved form heavy flow and high light to lowest flow in my tank and lowest light. It looks happy and is latched onto the underside of the rock really well. I didnt realize they got that big but im glad it moved to a spot with no SPS anywhere near it.

Do you have a picture or description of it? It turns out there are more than one species that go by Sebae. I was referring to Heteractis crispa.

I got mine when it was 3" one year ago. Now it is almost 18" when full open in 90gallon. It'd moved from the bottom of the tank to the top of rockwork under T5 light to get more light and flow then sitting there for about 8 months. It likes to bury its foot into a hole on the rock or between rocks. I've been feeding it once a week with silverside, table shrimp, and clam alternately. You should find the one w/ beige color & blue tips look like mine below. Good luck.

A bleached nem can heal in right conditions, but I agree, best to start w/ a healthy specimen.
Mine was bleached at purchase(years ago before I knew better)
This is it at about 4"

holy smokes that is huge!

Yea, mine is going in the 75g and once its bigger than 8 inches i will just trade or sell it out for a smaller one. You think he will mind being in the same system as a bta?

Not that IT won't mind, but YOU might!
They will sting and most likely kill what they touch.
My Crispa and M doreensis(LTA) were the reason for my bump from a 90g to a 180g simply cause they outgrew the tank.
But I think I had both a little over 3.5 years in 90g till I just got tired of rearranging rock/coral in an attempt to keep all happy.

Thats crispa is beautiful! Got any pics of your LTA? Thats my next pick-up if I can find one that looks good and is healthy.

they will move. maybe not for a long time but once something is up it will move. my seabe was healthy and grew huge. 12" in one year. had to upgrade just to keep it. then it outgrew that as well. now happy in the lfs display. (still growing)

You would do better starting with a small-med. H. malu sebae anemone as they tend to stay ~8", although some don't. H. malu can be somewhat more difficult then a H. crispa sebae anemone, so be sure you can devote time to it. I don't think it's the best idea to mix anemone species in a 75 gal. long term.

OT, TY RHF!
