About three weeks ago, I placed a three polyp frag of some crazy dime size speckled pink and mint green Palys in the SWEET SPOT. While working in my tank, I noticed something. You see, I have a modified Maxi jet 1200 hidden in the left corner shooting across the tank and boucning off the glass, and another in the right corner shooting to the left. My left corner of my overflow is 2 inches away from the MJ 1200, and the right corner is about 5 inches away on the opposite end. There's current shooting out just past the right corner, and current coming in as the water flows into the overflow on that same corner of the overflow. So I had an idea. What would happen if I placed a frag two inches below the water surface just in front of the right corner of my overflow with a swirling current passing over the frag 24/7. I call this, THE SWEET SPOT, very high current and direct intense lighting. Oh we all know and agree that stable parameters, lighting and very good medium to high flow with cause Z's and P's to thrive. So guess what happened, and I noticed this just this morning as I completely forgot I placed them there just 3weeks ago.
I turned off all of my circulation and return pumps to do and early morning feeding. With the water completely calm, I leaned over the overflow intake and said to myself, " I didn't place that colony there, how did that get there". No one touches my tank but me, but I just didn't remember putting it there. Holding the colony in my hand, I can clearly see the 3 very large speckled palys I placed in the spot I spoke of. I pull it out of the water, and my jaw dropped like a broken elevator. Mind you, there were 3 polyps when I placed it there just three weeks ago, now I have 5, no 7, no 9, is it 10.........NO. Well slap me around and call me Susan, I HAD 12 ADULT POLYPS. No, not babies, well, they were closer to being a mature polyp then they were babies. They were about % 70 the size of the adult polyps. In 14 years of zoa and paly keeping, I have never ever witnessed such growth. NO, I'm not bragging, just blown away.
I just glued 3 very rare and expensive palys to a 3" x 3" rock and yep, you guessed it, I placed it in the sweet spot. Now lets see if lighting can strike twice. Has anyone ever had such explosive growth as a result of utilizing the sweet spot in your tank?
