The Sweet Spot, AMASING GROWTH

SO WHERE IN THE WORLD IS THE PICTURE OF THIS SWEET SPOT? MUCHO COME ON MAN SHOW US THIS SPOT, plus I would like to see your tank and zoo colonies that this happened to. Thanks, Chris

That's interesting. I wonder if you put some egg crate a couple of inches below the surface of your overflow cup on the inside, if that would create a nice little frag shelf. The constant waterfall motion of the overflow cup plus the more nutrient rich water being drawn off the top combined with the strong light might be an ideal growth spot.

beach bum, isnt that the idea of an in tank fuge? YOu could make this and suspend a light diffuser box that is held together with ties and have a miniture prop tank where ever you wanted.

Similar. :)

Many zoos and palys in the wild are located very close to the surface. So close that they are often exposed to air with changes in the tides. I think it's logical to assume that not only are they taking advantage of the high light levels, but also the greater concentration of nutrients and phytoplankton located in the upper layers of the oceans.

Creating a space for them within a surface overflow can mimic their wild habitat to some extent. It might not work with all polyps but i'm interested to hear the progress of zoo growth with a few of the strains they're talking about in this thread.

Can I visit the "sweet spot" to pray and give homage?

LOL! Man that is AWESOME! Can't wait to see what the new frag does.

Thanks for sharing.

Mucho- you should do a documentary along with photos of progress. That would be cool. If you dont have a cemera, see if you can use someone elses.

I don't think he's placing it inside of the overflow, just in the corner very near his overflow. I'm the one that suggested the egg crate inside the overflow shelf. Sorry if I confused anyone. ;)

I'm just trying to figure out exactly what makes it a 'sweet spot'. I was thinking if it was inside his overflow it might have something to do with the rich surface water. Sounds like it might be flow though?

I am always interested in learning the best conditions for my corals.

Dave

It sounds like his sweet spot is a combination of high flow and high light. Growing them inside the overflow would probably only work well if it were well lit (not the case for most overflows). I think a lot of people grow zoas under high light, but not as many focus on massive water movement like with SPS. I may have to try relocating some of my zoas to my prime SPS spots since most of my strong, random water movement is in the upper middle of my tank.

Again, the over flow has an intake/inlet that sits in the tank where water drains into it. The reef is built right up to the intake/inlet, the frag was sitting in the tank, on top of the reef, just in front of the overflow intake/inlet. The frag was not in the overflow. Hope that clears it up.

that makes sense Mucho.. I remember seeing that area in your tank when I was there last time... it's been a while but I distincly remember your LR almost all the way up by the water column.. really really awesome aquascaping... :)

i just re-read your post on where you put them.

thats where my brightest zoa frag is at now. I moved the rock up there with 2 polyps on it, they got incredibly bright, and now there are 6.

Not explosive growth like you had but..... these arent fast growers. I did not expect to find this when I came back to it.
