The T5 Q&a Thread - split

New fixture is a sunpower 6x80w. Aquatic life is a 6x54w

Yes then you will have big change in your lighting. Based on your old fixtures position I would take the measurement from there to the top of your substrate. We can say that was 30 inches as an example. Now multiply that distance by 1.25 for the output difference so you get 37.5". subtract the 30" from the 37.5" and you will get 7.5" higher than your old fixture was. This should be slightly more than original light was at the bottom of the tank but slightly less what it was near the top of the tank. As you move it down slowly your top light measurement will come up faster than the bottom due to the nature of light transmission.

Ok thank you, that was very helpful. Should I lower a little weekly, and what is a good height at final spot?

Yes but I would not lower it more than one inch per week.

As far as the lowest you can go depends a lot on the corals you have in your tank. This really is trial and error based on how much growth you want, with keeping an eye out for bleaching of the corals.

lots of info and pages to read through.. Read throuhg first half and last half. Sure its been said/ask/answered but are the TrueLumen bulbs any good or just best to stick w/ ATI?

New to the bigger tanks. Had a nano for 8ish years and just started my first 75G build.

Anyone had their 6 bulb ati sunpower apart? I have one I plan to remove the center 4 bulbs from and mount two kessil a350w in it as well as mount up a couple LEDs on a dimmable driver for moonlights. If the bulbs were in order from 1 to 6, bulbs 2 and 5 are on one ballast and I was figuring I would just move those connections to bulbs 1 and 6, and basically gut everything else and run a couple blue+ bulbs with my kessils.

What bulb combo for a 4 Tube with 1 and 3 one one cord and 2 and 4 on another
Thanks

Current bulbs are garbage. Stick to ATI or other quality brands.

Look for a user on here named Sahin. He has a thread all about it.

4 blue, 1 GE and 1 ATI Purple plus looks good. Or change the GE to a coral plus for more blue.

Time to replace bulbs on my Aquatinics Constellation, which has 7 rows (each row has two 3 foot bulbs).

Working from rtparty's recommendaiton above, what bulb would you all add for the 7th row?

That basic combo works great for people liking a brighter tank the difference being for 6-7-or 8 bulbs usualy you will just use more Blue Plus bulbs. I say usualy as some prefer two Purple plus bulbs rather than just one. I went the route originaly with two purple plus but now seem like only one a little better.

Ok I'm still really tring to get a better understanding. Blue plus is the key bulb. What would happen to corals let's say sps, zoa and paly if all bulbs where blue plus bulbs? Not as good of color and great growth? If that is correct. What would happen if u used all coral plus? I beleive they r a stand alone bulb? Same question for purple plus. I'm not sure about aqua blue special. Just tring to really understand what the different bulbs do to the actual coral? I have read the spectrum charts but I don't understand then that well :(

1. All Blue Plus Growth on 90% of corals would be very good to exceptional. Floresenct Color would pop on 80% of corals. Reflective Collors would be extremly dull and dark. The tank would almost monochromatic with the exception of the floresent colors. Fish would look very drab.

2. All Purple Plus 75% of the corals would have good growth. Some corals would shut down to protect themselves from the excessive red light. Some corals would bleach out from the excessive red light. The over all tank would look purple or piink dependent on the individuals eye. Fish that are yellow would look darker almost brown.

3. All Coral Plus. Per ATI you would have balanced light. You would have fair coral growth, some florescense and reflected colors would look fairly good. Addition of any additional blue would help growth out. A few corals would shut down growth because of excessive red, and some delicate low light corals would bleach out from the excessive red.

4 All Aqua blue Special. The tank would look very bright. Reflective colors other than reds would look fantastic. You would have very marginal growth of corals as well as very marginal florescent colors.

5. All Atinic. The tank would be very dimly lighted by normal standards and have a violet glow to it. Florescent colors would pop but most of everything else would fall into a near black monochromatic look. Coral growth would be extremly slow to even none existeant.

Generaly speaking the Blue Plus and simular Bulbs like Super Blue are the bulbs that concentrate the light in the wave lenghts used the most by corals for growth and florescense. The Full spectrum bulbs (GE-6,500K, 10,000K, and Aqua Blue Special) are used to bring out the reflective colors, and the purple bulbs (fiji purple, purple plus) as used to bring out reflective reds in the corals the lack with the full spectrum bulbs and help with the growth a few shallow water corals. The Coral Plus is ATI's combination of all three of the prior groups in a balance they think is best.

If you went by ATI's literature the perfect lighting would be in a 2 to 8 bulb fixture having all the bulbs as coral plus. Most us however would look at this as too bright of a tank and would not be happy with the coral growth, or florescent colors. Fortunatly they realize everyone does not have there taste in color balance and therefore continue have the other bulbs manufactured for them which t allow us to custom our tank for our own eye preference.

In talking directly with ATI, this isn't true at all. They very much encourage the usage of the blue plus as the primary bulb. There is a reason it has a little more green than the Super Blue. The majority of our corals utilize the blue and blue-green light the most. So they added a little green for this reason.

The coral plus was meant as a stand alone bulb and not a replacement in any way.

My personal opinion is some things get confused/lost in translation.

So I pulled the trigger a few weeks ago on a ATI Sunpower 8x80. I am now thinking about supplemental moonlights is there a nice looking option out there. I have been looking into the R2 Dual Moonlights.

Hello All.....

I have a quick question as it relates to lighting my 45-gl frag tank.

I have a Tek Elite 8-bulb fixture hanging over my frag tank and I need to replace all the bulbs since they are 12+ months old. Currently, I am running a mix of Blue+, Purple+, Coral+ and I believe 1-Actinic.

To that end, the colors look washed out and I am looking for color, NOT growth. I am not pushing these frags to sell and only trade or sell frags infrequently. So color is of the utmost importance.

I have an ATI t% fixture running on my 60-gl Cube and got a handle on bulb combination on that tank. So any, and all, info that you can provide for a bulb combination for my frag tank would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance........

I'd keep the one coral + and one purple + in that combo, but maybe try one or two KZ super blues (they peak a little deeper blue I believe and have less green), and an extra actinic perhaps.

If you like the color on the ATI tank then copy that. For the 2 extra bulbs I would use 2 ATI Blue plus to help with color.
