The T5 Q&a Thread - split

Anyone running any 6500k bulbs in their mix? Giesemann tropic or GE? Curious how 2 of those would look in an 8 bulb

I would like to try one, but I can't find anyway to buy them without being charged $20+ just for shipping. I get bulbs from BRS currently with free shipping...but they don't carry them.

How many hours should I expect my T5 bulbs to last before I should replace them. I have a hybrid T5/Led and only running the t5 lights for 4 hours a day.

I have a couple in use on my planted tank I may pull out and pop in to see if they're worth hunting down. The BRS 160 upgrade the other day said that battle corals uses exclusively 6500k t5ho and 6500k halides on most of their mother colonies (not the ones you see in their frag tank/raceway pics obviously). Can't help but be interested.

My solution to the problem with the 50+ hr burn-in needed before dimming T5's. Saves having to reprogram my lights, etc. when I change lamps. I have it in my garage, turn on and come back a few days later. Might seem over kill but makes my life easier.

The original ballast was a Philips Electronic Ballast I bought off Amazon. I have the ballast that ATI uses now only because ATI sent me 2 replacements and I only needed one. So...I just used it. IMO...any electronic T5 ballast works just as well for burning in, wont make any difference. The end caps we from Amazon and the power cord was off a old extension cord. Had the wire.

I posted this as a separate thread but no replies....so...will try here.
I am moving into a new house and one of the places I could put my tank would turn it semi-peninsula style. However the real viewing pane would be the end not the sides which would not be that visible. My tank is somewhat a cube so that would work out fine. But I would still need to hang my 6 lamp ATI the long way and, so that the lamps are running front to back. My question is,
Hanging the lights this way will I see banding of the different colors?

No, you would only see that when two bulbs are on and if they are radically different.

Finally got my fixture. Reflectors are in so so shape. They'll do for a while if I don't get any water on them. They're not as bad as the zoomed in pic looks. Phone camera just gets grainy when white balance adjusted. Starting with

2 true actinic
3 blue+
3 coral+

These bulbs are old loaners just so I can try out some combos before buying all new ones. I'll also try out a couple Giesemann tropics in there as well as maybe a purple+ mixed in, in place of the coral+ or maybe a combination of the three.

Another combo I may try is 2 actinic, 2 blue+, 1 purple+, 1 Giesemann tropic, 1 AB special, 1 coral+. I like a fairly white tank. Like a 10k mh with actinic supplements. Very white with just enough blue to cool it off a touch. I already feel like my first bulb combo here may be a little blue for my taste

I did have the D120 leds over the tank and the sps grew but not fast and color wasnt hardly there and dont get me started on cyano (newly cleaned pics)!
BACK to FRONT (all ATI except the figi purp.)

Looking really good!!!

Hi, I have 4 x t5 54 watts connect to the same ballast. Does anyone know where I can purchase a quick disconnect like the one they included with LET retro it but this would have to have 12 wires connect to it? Thanks in advance

I have a 5 bulb fixture that I'm putting over my LPS tank would this combination be ok.

Switch complete. Got the Sunpower running. IThis bulb combo is still a touch too blue visually for my taste and I'd like it a bit warmer looking. I turn off the led supplements entirely during the daylight hours because it makes it even bluer. Lots of experimenting to do this weekend with some more bulbs.

What bulbs are you using now?

That is 2 ATI true actinic, 3 ATI blue+, 3 ATI coral+

I'd get a purple bulb. Try swapping out one of the coral plusses or blues with a Super Purple or Purple plus or Fiji Purple and that should whiten it up.

Will do. I've got tons of bulbs at my disposal. Currently NOT being used I have a few extra blue+, a few purple+, a few Aquablue specials, a couple Giesemann 6500k, more actinics. An assortment of the old Giesemann DD bulbs as well. Hoping to nail it in a couple attempts though that way I'm not constantly taking my lights down and shuffling bulbs for several weeks on end.

I am running
4 b+
2 c+
2 actinic
1 Aquablue special
1 Fiji purple

It has a pretty white look to it. If I had to estimate is say about 12k
