The T5 Q&a Thread - split

Geisemann midday

Thank you.

I have just checked the lumen specification of GE 6500K 39W in Reefgeek's web site, which is 3060 lumens (average). On the other hand, Sylvania (the German maker of ATI tubes) Luxline 849mm T5 Fluorescent Tube 39W lumen is 2990. In PAR terms, would 70 lumens make a lot of difference? It is just that Geisemann midday is four times more expensive than Sylvania.

Thanks

Lumens does not directly relate to PAR. Lumens is total light output regardless of what frequency the output is at. While PAR only reflects the light that can be used for photosynthesis. Then to add to the confusion all light that is useful for photosynthesis of plants is not useful for the photosynthesis of corals.

I know all that. Thanks anyway. You forgot to mention PUR.... Not all PAR is useful for corals....

I mentioned lumens because there is no other objective way of comparing the two bulbs as I could not find any PAR data for a Sylvania 6500 K bulb.

Thank you, I ran just the 6500k for about 15 minutes by itself, my ricordeas went nuts and opened up bigger than I've ever seen them, and my zoas and gsp got ****ed and closed up. Hopefully everyone adjust, I really like the color of the tank now.

Different corals have different lighting needs. This is especialy true of softie corals in which some actualy like very low light compared to what some LPS and SPS corals require. You can usualy balance these needs with placement of the corals. but if the difference is too extrem you just have select corals that are closer to what you make them happy with.

Hi ,,,

Today I found Narva ( white color ) but I don't find any information about it , is it 10000k ? Is it good bulb ?

I believe it is 8000K, but will confirm it later today. A lot of folks here in the UK use Narva Blue tubes. Narva blues replicate the output of ATI Blue plus tubes albeit they are very slightly bluer in output.

hth- :)

Hello Grim, and all others-- looking for some help.

I have a 90gallon tank with a few sps on the top and mainly lps, softies throughout the rest with several acans on the bottom. I have a six bulb tek sunlight supply fixture. I am looking for a lighting combination that will allow my sps to grow, but not be too intense for my lps and softies. I enjoy a 16-20k look. Thank you in advance

The problem with PUR is that what one coral uses is not the same as what the next coral uses. In reality you would then have to micro manage your tank looking at the needs of each individual coral. When doing this you will find that what light is ideal for coral A might actualy be very poor for coral B.

Thanks ,,, any one can Confirm ?

I have checked it in one of the UK forums. It is 4000K.
This does not sound right. if it a blue bulb it should be well above 7,200K yet you saying it is 4,000K which would be lacking of Blue compared to the red and green?"

New here , and have read this very interesting post...I am currently looking for a new fixture over my 90 gallon (24 deep 18 wide)...My thoughts are that the ati 6 bulb would be the absolute best (under $700-$800)...However, I need to mount fixture on tank and the ati does not seem to have that ability. I currenty have two current nova's with ati bulbs...I also need a splash guard, it seems to make no sense to put a lamp over the tank without a splash guard and then thave te water ruin the reflectors and bulbs...Would appreciate any thoughts, would really appreciate it if anyone has found a way to mount the ati on the tank...Thank You

6 lamp Aquaticlife fixture or Tek Elite.

I'm running a 48 inch MH/T5 dual 250W 20k bulbs and it has 4 54w HO T5 bulbs was wondering what t5 bulbs would help pop the corals. I have mosty soft corals

I'm sorry if its been asked but i couldnt find it in the many splits of this thread.

How often should I be replacing my bulbs? I have a Tek Elite (has plexi shield in place with 2 cooling fans built into the fixtire) 4x54w fixture

2 Blue Plus
1 Purple Plus
1 KZ New Gen

I put it in service July 30th 2011, I run the lights from 1PM - 9PM daily. Is there some kind of formula? What should I be looking for etc...

I recently had a hair algae breakout and someone told me it could be from the bulbs going bad. (not sure about this) I cant tell a difference in color but maybe its cause I see it daily.

thanks!

Best branded T5 actinic tube

Best branded T5 actinic tube

If you were to buy a true actinic T5 tube, peaking at 420 nm, which brand would you buy?

You should be able to get 10 to 14 months out of those lamps. I've seen more stuff get blamed for hair algae....... All things being equal it will grow better under infrared light which old lamps produce more of but I would check the water parameters. I'd be shocked if the elite doesn't cool the lamp well enough they would be dead this soon. You could always throw in a new blue plus and compare it to the others you have. After about an hour you shouldn't notice a huge difference between a new and old lamp.
