The T5 Q&a Thread - split

I just picked up a 8x54w Tek light to possibly replace my two Radions. My question is how should I acclimate the tank to t5 in terms of lighting schedule? The tank is a 80 rimless 48x24x16 the lights are currently about 12" off the surface of the tank.

My radions turned on all blues for 2 hours then ramped up to 50% intensity at 20k for 8 hours, then ramped down to all blues again for 2 hours.

I thought my LEDs were bright, buy holy crap when I turned all 8 bulbs on I almost blinded myself. At the moment I scheduled my Apex to turn on my blue tubes from 12pm-10pm and my daylight bulbs from 4pm-6pm. I'm afraid if I run them more than 2 hours at the moment I'm going to bleach everything in my tank.

How should I acclimate? Every week add 30 min to both sets of lights up to what total time for each set of light? I was thinking 10 hours blues and 4-6 hours for the daylights.

Wait, if most of the "peaks" in Chlorophyll A and other primary pigments, etc are in the 410nm-480nm range, why would more redder bulbs make growth rates higher? If anything it'd be the opposite....

I am currently running an 8 lamp T5, 6' long. In the following configuration:
BACK
ATI Blue+ ATI Blue+
ATI AquaBlue ATI AquaBlue
ATI Blue+ ATI Blue+
ATI AquaBlue ATI AquaBlue
FRONT

I wanted to swap out 2 of the lights & add a purple+...my question is...which two should I swap out? The Blue+ or Aquablue?

Any comments would be appreciated, thanks!

I I read this correct your runnibg 4 Aqua Blues and 4 Purple Plus bulbs. I would not run more than 2 Aqua Blues. You wantas manny of Blue Plus as you can use so keep the 4 you have.

Front
1 Blue Plus
2 Purple Plus
3 Aqua Blue Special
4 Blue Plus
5 Blue Plus
6 Aqua Blue Special
7 Purple Plus
8 Blue Plus
Rear

I agree with you to some extent. But there are various photosentetic chemicals in corals. Some corals do have chemicals that are activeated by a small amount of red light. But the ideal is to have just a small amount of red light compared to a lot of blue light. This is why most of us use only 1 or 2 bulbs that are not Blue in 6 light fixtures, and 2 to 3 in 8 bulb fixtures.

Well there can be two reasons for the difference in brightness. First off you have 416 Watts of T-5's which is equal to 200 to 300 Watts of LED's depending upon the manufacturer of the LED's thenselves and what series they are. Secondly what is the bulb combination on the 8 T-5 bulbs you should have mainly blues with the exception of 1 White and 1 or 2 Purple Bulbs.

Your timing sound about right if you have a balanced light spectrum.

What ATI bulbs should I use for best color pop for dusk/dawn lighting?
I currently use a Blue+ and a Purple+ and I am not really liking it much.
I have an 8x54 watt Powermodule.

I am in the process of switching to ATI Blue + X 3 and ATI coral + X 3 (1:1). This combination also looks great for dawn/dusk lighting. It is not overbearing like ATI coral + and ATI purple + or ATI blue + and KZ fiji purple.

What are you trying to accomplish? 2 blues or 2 actinic depending on what you want. Even one blue and one actinic is nice as well.

I absolutely love my 4 blue plus and 2 coral plus setup I have going. I will probably switch one blue for an actinic to lower PAR though because I've got too much as is lol.

Going back a few years Grim talked me into trying that combination as well. I did not like it either to me it looked too purple, and some of my guest commented it looked pink. I went back to using two Blue Plus bulbs on the Dawn to Dusk.

If your old school there is nothing like just a pair of Atinic bulbs in the dawn to dusk. But the Atinics will give you little in coral growth, and the Blue Plus do give you enough of a spike in the 420 nm range to cover anything the corals need.

If I were you I would just swap the bulb ositions so you have the purple on just doring midday ighting and run all Blue Plus bulbs during dawn and Dusk.

Not sure if i should post this here or not, I;ve read down quite a few ways and am still not settle on what combo i want to try.

I'm about to ditch my LEDs and go to T5's. I plan on using a 4x39 bulb retrofit hood over a 65g mixed (lps/softie) tank, driven by a 2 advance ballasts, I also have a IC660 from my VHO days if i want to overdrive. I'm ditching the leds because i never have been able to get the color i had when i ran vho's. I wasn't happy with the leds since day one.

I was thinking front to back all ati lamp, blue+, purple +, aqua blue,Blue plus. Would this be a good combo or should i ditch the purple+ for another blue?

Depends on what you want. I'd go 2 blue plus and 2 coral plus or 3 blue and 1 coral.

I see no need for the purple plus any longer with the coral plus. I run 4 blue and 2 coral and there is plenty of red to warm up the tank.

What LED fixture are you using?

Thanks! The 2x Blue+ looks great for the dusk/dawn.
I've never used the actinic T5 before. Will they provide more color pop?

It's a DIY system. 24 white 24 blue on 4 700ma mean wells. The emitters are soel semiconductor .. I get growth with them but they are a weird blue and my corals look awful under them. I've had them 2 years. I had optics but I removed them as I melted some shrooms

I've read a lot of good about the coral +. I'm going for a 14-16k look . Thanks

Hello!

I am changing my bulb and have ordered 2 ATI Aquablue, 2 ATI BLue +, 1 ATI Purple + and one KZ New Gen.

On my tank right now is 3 Blue + and a Purple plus and would like to try something else, maybe a little less blue... And would like the colours to pop :)

Any suggestion?

Thx!
