The T5 Q&a Thread - split

Some reefers are telling me to lower the lights to 4 inch above water level as my depth is 24 inch and I am using 24w

That all depends on what type of corals you have and where they are fixed on live rock in relation to water surface as well as the age of your tubes. Without a quantum sensor, it is a guess work.

Corals are around 11 inch from water level

I would start with 8 inches with new tubes. You need to bear in mind that you have clams on the sand bed. You will need to gradually lower your unit as the time goes by to maintain the light intensity. Your unit will probably be about 3-5" over the water water surface in about 10 months time at which time tube replacement may be necessary.

With ATI bulbs I think you would enjoy 2 actinics, 3 blue+, the 2coral+ an one purple+. It's blue but with all 8 running it's like a deep white. 16-18k I'd guess. I may be in the minority but the blue+ bulb is great but has too much of a turquoise look to it if you load up with too many. The actinics and purple+ help to tame that a bit and give it some balance

Got a tank pic of that combo?

3-5 inch ???? Any indication to tell me to lower the light ?

Coral colours will start to look less vibrant and their growth will slow down. I tend to lower my unit 1" or a little more every few months without using my Apogee sensor in these days because I can tell that it is to to increase light intensity.

Hi,

Anyone have any suggestions for my 6x24 non-dimmable over my frag tank? I am looking for color and growth.

I currently use:

Front

Giesemann Tropic
ATI Actinic
Purple +
AB Special
ATI Actinic
Giesemann Tropic

Yikes! Try 3 blue plus, 2 coral plus, one Giesemann super purple. The combo you have right now may be inhibiting growth with all that red.

Hey Matt,

You tout the KZ Fiji Purple over the others like Gmann Super Purple and ATI Purple+. I have only used the ATI in that color range. So....could you say why you prefer KZ's or can explain the difference vs. the others?

Thanks

Serious question...what about the old school 6500k halides with actinic supplements. Everyone talks about how well that combo grows coral. His proposed bulb combo seems like it would look pretty similar. It may be visibly unappealing to some, but if 6500k lights used to grow coral so well why wouldn't this? I've heard/read somewhere that Adam at battle corals uses 6500k lighting over some of the mother colony tanks?

The KZ Fiji purple is a less harsh in the red areas and seems to have a bit more violet. The super purple is close to the FP looks wise. The ATI purple plus is the harshest to my eye.

The FP also had higher par than the other purple bulbs when I tested the bulbs I had on hand.
