The T5 Q&a Thread - split

Will it produce the par needed to grow sps in upper half of tank? thanks for the help

I use a 6 bulb over my 75 gal, which should have the same footprint.

Par just at the waterline is around 6-700

Par on the sandbed, in the center of the tank is 250

You will have no issue growing sps in the tank. All I have in my tank is Acropora and I have corals from the top of the rocks to lying on the sandbed from left to right.

I grow SPS in 5' 150 gallon with a 48" 6 bulb. I had this same fixture over my 75 and couldn't keep a lot of stuff at the sand bed because of too much light.

My tanks a Oceanic 200g. It measures 84x24x24. I just bought a twelve bulb fixture that puts six 36'' bulbs on each side. What do you recommend for bulbs and in what order?

I am running an 80Wx8 tube Giesemann Matrixx II. I have had a few problems with some corals since moving to this light from an LED setup that didn't provide enough coverage.

My configuration from front to back is currently:
1. Empty
2. G-Man super actinic
3. G-Man aquablue coral
4. G-Man actinic blue
5. G-Man ultra purple
6. G-Man aquablue coral
7. G-Man actinic blue
8. Empty

The ends are currently empty because I'm running on an 18" tank and using all 8 lamps seems like overkill. I use the 4 and 5 as my dusk/dawn lights and they are on for about 13 hours a day. The other 4 come on for about 10 hours a day.

The light is about 12" off the surface of the water.

I have a green leather coral pretty high up, near an RBTA that seems to be doing great under this lighting. Next to those guys, there used to be what I think was some sort of Favia (not sure it came on the rock). This coral was doing mostly well under the old LED's seems to have disappeared now. On the right side, about 60% up I have a pink bird's nest, purple stylo, and plating montipora. The stylo seems to be just fine, the bird's nest seems to be alive, but has some algae on it now and again. The Montipora seems to be losing color moreso in places that get more light.

I have a Trumpet and Duncan in the sand, the trumpet is doing great down there, while the Duncan has lost a couple of heads that are more upfacing.

Is it possible I am giving these guys too much light with this fixture? Too little? Wrong bulb config?

I am still figuring out T5 lighting, thanks for any input.

That's a great bulb configuration and a quality light. Lighting alone isn't the problem. Perhaps the change caused some acclimation that threw a parameter off. I've had alk spikes kill things off when changing lights because growth will suddenly slow while things adjist

I'm setting up a 48"L x 24"W x 16"H tank with the ATI 6x54w unit, all soft and lps corals. Any bulb combo recommendations? Comment with them, I searched a lot but this is a HUGE thread.

I have a new (standard) 180 set-up (really just a consolidation of small tanks). I have anemones (BTA) but will eventually add a ritteri. Lots of zoas and mushrooms, some LPS and a couple of monti plates.

I have a Hamilton Cebu Sun 72" which contains 3x250W 14000K halides and 4x 80W ATI "Blue Plus" and 4x 80W ATI "Purple Plus". I bought the fixture second hand but I know the bulbs were recently replaced, I saw the receipt.

So, I'm unhappy with the "pop" of my coral. They are dong fine in terms of health but they are not being shown off. Things that were really stunning in my other tank just don't seem to get enough blue "pop" to them.

Recommendations on different bulbs?

Also possibly supplemental LED strips?

I don't know of many led strips that could compete with 3x250 watt halides and 8x80 watt t5ho. It's not needed though. Want more pop? Switch the bulbs out for Radiums and in the t5ho do 4 blue+ 4 true actinic staggered B+ Act B+ Act MH B+ Act B+ Act. That will look stellar

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. :)

I'd replace two t5s on each side with reefbrites XHO actinics, or DIY actinics from rapid led. My experience with radiums and t5 is that the blue LEDs are SLIGHTLY noticeable with all lights on, but the true value is when it's just the leds or just the leds and t5s on at dawn and dusk.

If I switch out the bulbs for radiums, don't I need to get new ballasts?

Yeah those aren't the spec ballasts for Radiums. They MAY work but may not fire reliably.

I have a Kessil A360WE over a 24" cube and am seeing quite a bit of shading. I think one solution might be a pair of T5s to supplement the A360WE, but I am presently restricted by my canopy. The inner dimensions are 23.25".

Are there any T5 solutions that would fit within this space? It seems that the length of an ATI Coral Plus lamp is 22.125", including pins, according to MarineDepot's listing. Are there any reftofit solutions that would work for me?

I've also considered other options - adding another A360WE, adding a pair of A160 lights, adding 4 A80 lights when they become available... I'm really open to any solutions/suggestions. The tank is only recently stocked - I currently have a few small sps frags.

Of course, hacking the back of the canopy open remains an option, but one I'd rather avoid.

Thanks in advance!!

I'm looking for an excuse to put one of these over a tank. Might hook a frag tank up to my system and run one.

Does the light fixture play a part on how intense the lights are? My lighting looks so dim.
