The T5 Q&a Thread - split

I'd start with 3 blue plus, 1 actinic, 1 coral plus and 1 purple plus. Grab an extra coral plus to play with

I have this same selection of bulbs, minus the coral +. Been going back and forth between a second actinic and an aquablue special. Should I try a coral + in this slot? running mostly LPS with some anemones.

I'm going to change up my bulb combo personally. Moving away from acropora and focusing more on lps.

Current bulb combo aimed toward maximum sps growth was
3 blue+
2 actinic
1 6500k
1 purple+
1 coral+

Now I'm only running 6 bulbs for peak photoperiod. So running the two bulb channel for dawn dusk, and then those two will turn OFF for peak photoperiod mid day and the remaining 6 come on. New combo will be

3 blue+
2 coral+
1 actinic

With the dawn dusk being
1 blue+
1 actinic.

So total combo (though all 8 never run) is
4 blue+
2 actinic
2 coral+

An Aquablue Special will make the tank brighter and more white. It will also wash out some of the fluorescence you see. I don't care for the ABS at all. Another coral plus gets my vote

I think that will look awesome on an LPS tank

I concur with RT.

The Coral+ Blue+ Actinic will be a great combo.
ABS will be more white and wash out colors.
Purple+ was way too pink/red for me...
(FYI i run 2 coral/2blue on my 4 bulb)

It is tough to balance out the pink/red from a Purple Plus with only 4 bulbs. However, I love 2 Blue Plus, 1 Purple Plus and 1 Actinic for a 4 bulb. I ran that on my old tank and really liked it.

Seems like not many in here are running giesemann bulbs but for the people who do they really really like them. Anyone done comparison between blue+ and aqua blue azure(I think that's the comparable one)?

There's a pretty massive write up comparing the ati bulbs with their new giesemann counterparts and the tests reveal the spectral plots to be nearly identical between the ATI Blue+ and the Giesemann Actinic Blue. The aquablue azure is closer to the aquablue special. A lot more green/cyan in it. But par levels and color are so close that the $2-3 dollar savings on the ati bulbs is enough reason for me to use those over the giesemann. Essentially the same bulb, no reason not to buy the less expensive one

So lose the ABS and try a coral +?

that will give me:
(3) Blue +
(1) Purple +
(1) Actinic
(1) Coral +

I'm switching my tank to saltwater and since one of my freshwater bulbs is no longer working, I decided to switch my bulbs for reef lamps. I currently only got a two bulb fixture and decided to go with a combination of Purple+ and Blue+. I went with blue for the main spectrum, complimented with Purple+ because I like the reddish/purple colour and I understood that Purple+ compliments soft corals. Which I hope to keep in the future.

My question is as follows. Does it matter in which order I place the bulbs? (Front to back). I'm thinking about placing the Purple+ one at the front row in the hope that it's more visible to the human eye as I like the Purple look. I realize that it doesn't matter for the fish or the corals, but do we see the difference?

Try it and see what you think. You will need more than 2 bulbs if you really want coral though.
