Should be fine. It's all a matter of personal taste. Some people want more blue, some less. You really wont know for sure until you see it running.

How blue do you think it will be with my choices?

How blue do you think it will be with my choices?

I ended up ordering the following and just looking for confirmation that I did ok.

65 gal tank 36"x6

1. ATI-Blue Plus
2. ATI Aquablue
3. Geis Pure Atinic
4. Figi Purple
5. ATI Blue Plus
6. ATI Aquablue

Where I ordered only had 2 blue plus in stock so I substituted the pure atinic. What do you think?

Frag Tank Lighting Recommendations

Frag Tank Lighting Recommendations

Hi Grim,

I followed your advice for my 350G DT and am very pleased with the bright crisp lighting with colors that "pop" !!

Thanks for your help.

Now I am setting up a small frag tank - it is 24 x 24 x 12.

frag8.jpg

I was thinking about picking up 4 x 24W retro kits from ReefGeeks. Do you think four bulbs spaced about 4.5" apart will be sufficient for frag growth? (some SPS and LPS) If four bulbs will be enough, what bulbs would you suggest?

If the tank will need six bulbs, (!) same quesion...

Thanks!

LL

Hey Grim,
I'm almost done building my stand and I want to do a matching canopy but I'm not sure how to handle lighting with that. I'm debating whether I want to splurge on the SunPower 4x24w. My tank is 36x12x20H. I'm assuming from what I know of that light that I would have plenty of light on all levels. Secondly, is that fixture a good option for use with a canopy? If not, can you recommend something for me? I'm not opposed to a 36" setup, I just figured a 24" would be light put to good use in a tank this size. Needless to say I've spent a lot of time on reefgeek and in this forum trying to figure out my plan of action but haven't gotten far. Thank again, grim!

Slightly more blue than most of the 14K halides.

120 gallon mix reef,clam,and anemone

120 gallon mix reef,clam,and anemone

Hey Grim,

I want to set-up a mix reef. I want a little bit of every thing. I want to keep a clam and an anemone. I have a 120 gallon (48 X 24X 24) with dual overflows on each corner. I'm planning on buying an ATI 48" 8 X 54w but my LFS recommended the 48" 6 X 54w. They said they have a customer with the same size aquarium and he only runs on 6 bulbs because when he ran all 8 he was bleaching his SPS. I want to start the rock work 6-7in from the front of the main glass. What would you recommend the 6 bulb or 8 bulb fixture and what bulb combo? (I like light blue color)
Here a picture so you have an idea of what I'm talking about.

I would try 3 ATI Blue Plus and a UVCL Actinic White and see what you think. If you want this as a display as well I would do 6 lamps and add another Blue Plus and a GE 6500K Daylight.

I would do a 4 lamp Ice Cap HO retro with the 2 ballasts so you have dusk/dawn. I would use the 36" lamps, the retro will fit into a 36" space. I would run 3 ATI Blue Plus and a UVL Actinic White. Grab a ATI Aquablue as a spare so you can try out different combinations.

Eithert will work. Start with 4 ATI Blue Plus, 1 UVL Actinic White and a GE 6500K Daylight. Get an ATI Aquablue as a spare. You could use it in place of the GE or UVL if you want a little more blue or in place of a Blue Plus for a little less.

Thanks Grim - it's just going to be a behind the scenes frag tank. I will try the 4 bulb set-up and see how growth is... I can always add another pair later on.

I have a buddy that works at an electrical wholesaler, and he had a 4 bulb 54w t5 fixture with one reclector that is curved around each bulb.
My question is will this work on my frag tank?
what is the difference between say a current extreme besides the ability to do dusk and dawn with two switches?
Thanks in advance!

There is a cheapo version of the Tek that uses Workhorse ballasts and cheaper reflector material. If that is what these are they would be fine as long as the light demand isn't too much.

Think It will grow sps good on a 48"x18"X12" I have the 4 bulb one... What would be the best bulb combo be for growth and color?
He sells these fixtures to people that use them to light up shops, big buildings, and warehouses.
Im gonna get the six bulb one with 2 switches also!
Thanks for all your help!

Hey Grim I'm getting a 36x24x17 tank and want to know what you think of the Nova Extreme Pro. I will be replacing the bulbs with ati blue & b+. Given the short tank what do you think of this setup? Will I get good par for a SPS dominant tank? This fixture with replaced bulbs is half the price of a sunpower. With replaced bulbs will the nep beat a tek? Should I just save more for the ATI fixture? Are there any par results from neps with changed out bulbs?

I would be interested in testing one. WHat does the guy sell a 6x54 watt unit for? My wife will kill me if another box shows up before we move into the new house but this fixture interests me.

If the units are as described I think it would easily grow SPS in that tank.
