Hey Grim I'm getting a 36x24x17 tank and want to know what you think of the Nova Extreme Pro. I will be replacing the bulbs with ati blue & b+. Given the short tank what do you think of this setup? Will I get good par for a SPS dominant tank? This fixture with replaced bulbs is half the price of a sunpower. With replaced bulbs will the nep beat a tek? Should I just save more for the ATI fixture? Are there any par results from neps with changed out bulbs?

If you sit the NEP right on top of the tank I think it will do fine with good lamps in it.

I will talk with him next week and see what we can work out on a price for the 6x54 for you... Ill tell him that we have a potential market for some sales and need a tester model for cheap. If you the GOD of t5's says its a good fixture and the price is right he could have the potential to make some money and save us reefers some money also! Ill get back with some more info monday or tuesday!

A local reefer ordered one these fixtures in and is waiting to get it right now.

It looks VERY promising as it has Miro 4 reflectors and a really good ballast that is warrantied for 5 years. It is all open and therefore will be extremely easy to cool. I think the fixture cost him like $85 maybe $100 with shipping. He then went and bought some ATI and GE bulbs to run it. I hope to have some PAR numbers within a month.

Grim let me know if you want one and I will put you in contact with the guy. Pretty cheap and if the numbers are good then you can say goodbye to running TEK's or even Current USA stuff. The only big drawback is that it only comes in 48", for now.

Hey grim I have a 125 72" across and want to do all T5's. What kind of setup would I need to keep my SPS still growing. I have a 90 right now with 2 400 watt MH. But like I said I want the new 125 all T5's. Thanks for your help.

I just bought the icecap retro kit for my 120 (4x2x2). All my bulbs are icecap - 4 14k, 2 twilight and 2 actinic. The tank will be a mixed sps/lps and of course my son needs his frogspawn.

Can someone tell me the best order for these? I guess starting at the front and working my way to the back? Thanks.

What the hell, the wife is gonna shoot me anyway, Might as well go all out,

At a minimum either of there might be the catsazz for mounting in a canopy. I think if those prices are close there are going to be some very unhappy fixture manufactures in the reefing business.

If you want a fixture the Aquactinics Constellation will do good. For a retro I would do a 6x80 watt Aqua Illumination retro from reefgeek. You would just want to leave the last 6 or 8 inches at each end for lower light critter.

Not my idea of a good mix of lamps but we'll give it a try

Front
Actinic
14K
Twilight
14K
Actinic
14K
Twilight
Actinic

I would plan on ordering a couple more twilights to replace a couple of the 14K's if they are what I think they are. but I could be wrong.

It would definitely be a retro. I'm just worried that the 6" on both sides would look really dim. Should I keep them up higher to let the light move out more?

Hey Grim! I've got a sunlight supply 4 bulb tek light. here's my setup....

front
blue plus
blue plus
aquable special
blue plus
back

Are these good bulbs, and should I change the bulb order? What could I keep with this setup? Could I keep sps on the very top of my rock work? If I got another aquable could I keep more high light corals? I have lots of questions!

Also, does it matter how high of the water I hang the light?

Thank You in advance!:D

Thanks Grim. I'll put these in for now. It was a deal from a local shop. If you let me know what I should swap, I'll order new bulbs and put these in for now. Thanks.

hey grim

I have a 8 bulb fauna t5 fixture...dimmable...

4 bulbs on 1 channel... 4 bulbs on another dimmable by my profilux...

what would you say is the ideal mix of bulbs for really nice to the eye.....

yo Grim,
I recently set up a 40breeder, and have a 36" 4 bulb current light. I want to get better bulbs than the stock and was wondering what you would recomend. I like a little blue, 14-20k look but still want some good growth. Really I just want those colors to pop. Thanks for the input.

the current bulb mix that i am using and not loving is

2 powerchrome midday
2 ati aqua blue special
1 fiji purple
3 ati blue plus special...

what should i change to make this ideal?? cant describe what i dont like about it but it doesnt feel wow...

Grim,

Thank you for helping me out a few weeks ago on bulb selection. I went with an ati 36" PM with the following bulb you suggested:

Front to back:

ati aquablue
ati blue plus
UVL actinic white
GE 6500k daylight
ati blue plus
ati blue plus

The color is nice, but a little to white for my taste. I like the color of a 14k MH. What do you think i should change out to get the color i like? Also, since i'm ordering some new T5...might as well get a few more bulbs to try, what other one should i try.

Thanks

You'll hardly notice the ends. If you look in my gallery there is a pic of my old 125 with 60" lamps and the pic exaggerates the shadows in the upper corners a bit

What you have would be fine for SPS on the rock assuming the tank isn't too tall, not over 24". Not much of a difference adding another Aquablue. I would try to keep the light 4 to 6 inches above the tank.

That was my exact thought. If looks aren't important or you have a canopy and don't want to deal with a retro than that fixture would be perfect. Add a couple fans in the canopy and let there be light! For $200-$250 w/bulbs, you can't beat that price. I just hope the performance lives up to my expectations.

I can't. I can get you close but its all personal preference.

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Actinic White
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus

You may need to tweak positions to get a good mix for dusk/dawn. I would grab a ATI Aquablue and GE 6500K Daylight to have as spares and so you can play around with different mixes.

3 ATI Blue Plus and 1 Either GE 6500K Daylight or UVL Actinic White. The UVL Lamp will give you a slightly purple tint and pop pink and purple colors better. The GE will bring out greens a little better.
