The T5 Q&a Thread

Will this give me a more blue look or purple look? Or a happy medium that will blow me away...

are the ati purple plus and the ati actinic anything like the uvl super actinic?
and will these bulbs stand up to the use of a icecap 660? I formally had 2 uvl actinic white and 2 super actinic, how will this look in comparison?

Should be a happy medium. I am not impressed with UVL's performance on Ice Cap ballasts.

4 ATI Blue Plus, 1 ATI Pro Purple and a GE 6500K Daylight.

Thank you for the quick reply. I should have asked you in my original post. In relation to my current 14k phoenix setup, would you say it will be about the same color?

Also, how would you arrange those? I read on your site not to put 2 of the same bulb next to each other, I think.

Thanks!

Avoid the Ebay stuff.

Before we can even recommend anything we need to know tank size.

If you are going with 8 bulbs and want SPS, you need to look at Tek at a minimum. I would be looking at ATI myself. You might be able to get away with a 6 bulb ATI system.

As far as bulb choice, don't run a daylight/actinic mix like that.

Thanks for the info. I will not have any clams in this tank but will be ALL sps. I also thought about a retro kit with Ice Cap ballasts? Any thoughts?

Thanks
Mark-

Stick with the ATI. No need to overdrive the bulbs. You will just hurt their life and be replacing bulbs quicker.

You could get away with an 8 bulb LET retro kit with standard HO ballasts and be fine.

I still recommend the 8 bulb Powermodule for an ALL SPS tank.

Grim,
Thanks for your fast and accurate reply.

With this setup:

Front
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Purple Plus
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus

Which bulb(s) would I be using for dusk/dawn simulation? Since there's no ATI True Actinic 03.

Thanks for the info Ryan. One thing....LET retro? where do i get more information on this? Link?

Thanks

Thanks for the vendor suggestion and bulb size clarification.

With the Current USA 4x24w fixture, is there anything I can do to modify this thing to get more light output? I'm on a very small budget, so it would have to be "worth the money" to do. Also, considering the following light combo. However, I'm concerned it may blast the hell out of me with BLUE. I like a medium colored tank to look at, not one blinding me with 20k spectrums.

2 ATI Blue Plus
1 KZ Fiji Purple
1 ATI Aquablue.

Thanks in advance.

Great thread. Tons of info that I've enjoyed processing. Quick question for anyone that cares to comment.

I'm working on a new 75 gallon peninsula installation and am planning to use a 6x54w Sunpower. With sps dominating the rockwork and some lps brains, acans and such down low, how would you handle a bulb combination when the front and the back are truly both front viewable? Thanks very much.

guys quick question will this fixture do for my 90g tank 48x24x18 dimensions

its a 48" 4 bulb t5 HO - i am thinking of picking up 2 of those and putting them both on so i will end up with 4 12ks and 4 actinic will it work for a start or its a bad idea?

please help me out i am about to order them as i need it to ship in time for my visit to the states

You get what you pay for. They are CHEAP. They do not have individual reflectors nor are they UL listed.

They do provide light. Most of the current reviews are good. Most of the older reviews are TERRIBLE.

Don't expect them to last.

With that said, I have them on my tank and I love them. I couldn't afford Tek and IceCap at the time. I was hoping to get 6 months out of them and get a new fixture for Christmas. I'm finishing my second month without any glitches (knocking on wood). I bought from aquatraders as I do not like to deal with Ebay.

I got my ATI Sunpower! Check out the install on my 54 corner. I love it! Thanks for the help Grim!

Grim,
Would you recommend a glass cover for my tank? I don't know If I should leave it topless or not.

It would be interesting to know of anyone who has par readings of an open top tank, vs a mesh tank, vs glass.

From my understanding, not only are we removing the top so that light does not get obscured, but also for oxygenation as well.

If you cover the top of your tank with glass, it will greatly inhibit it's ability to evaporate, which will reduce it's natural cooling ability. Plus, salt creep and everything else would tell me you would be doing a lot of maintenance to keep it clean.

84.5"L x 24"D x 24" high room divider 210g tank. FOWLR.

I was originally looking at LEDs and have changed my mind to T5s
