6x54w tek would be cheaper with better bulbs and you can buy legs for it. Check Reefgeek

I can get an 8 bulb unit for 509 if I get the Tek! Or should I just get the unit without the bulbs and buy some ATI bulbs? Also, since I am putting the unit on the tank should I get the acrylic shield? The 8 bulb unit would allow me to keep SPS right? Sorry for the barrage of questions but I am in the planning stages and I want to make sure I buy right the first time.

If the tank is less than 20" front to back go 6 lamps. If you order from reefgeek you get the lamps of your choice included for 509 for an 8 lamp Tek. DO NOT USE A SPLASH GUARD on a tek, It overheats the lamps and kills the output.

Thanks for the quick reply! My tank is 24" front to back the dimensions are 48"x24"x24". Would you still recommend a 6 bulb? I had no clue about the splash guard! I am very new to this so any info you give me is much appreciated!

Thank you so much for your help, do you have a picture of how that setup may look? Also would that be too much light for all the LPS i'm gonna have. My tank will be a majority LPS with some SPS mixed in. Thanks again for the help I think thats all the questions I have ;-)

Please critique my bulb selection. Bulbs 1-8 will be in 24w and 39w ati sunpowers, bulbs 9-10 will be retros.

can i get your opinion. mixed reef. sps near the top
light is about 6-8" from water. am i to close?

I burn almost that same combo. I changed the outer Blue Plus bulbs for actinics to kill a little of the blue and get a little more pop. You may get a little better color spread by sticking a blue plus between the special and the purple.

You're probably not too close, but your corals are a good indication if you are. I keep my TEK 6 bulb about 10" above my 40 breeder. It keeps the LPS on the sand happier. Your extra depth probably makes up for that with your light. I suspect you'll get better light blending if you lift it a bit though.

Hey Grim, I was suggested to get an idea off you.

I have a new tank 48x21x19 which I need to light. I was leaning towards the 8x54w Powermodule, to keep sps up top and lps on the bottom. Should I go with the 6 bulb version?

I shouldn't have a problem with bulb selection, it is the unit that I am worried about. I actually have the 8x54w Tek light, but it runs too warm for my taste. Thoughts?

How long should I go before replacing bulbs? Also replace one bulb per week to not overpower corals or just replace them all at once?

Depends on the fixture. I'd say 9-12 months, some people say longer. As far as light acclimation, you could put some screens on or swap out bulbs every few days. 1 bulb per week seems a bit excessive. Maybe 2 bulbs a week or 3 depending on how many bulbs you have.

Upgraded Light (Growth Question )

Upgraded Light (Growth Question )

Upgraded light from a single bulb T8 fixture to a 2x39w 36" Nova Extreme T5 fixture. Not the best light but a upgrade from what I had. Plus it was only 30bucks.

Question: Can I grow any corals under this light? Tank is 36" long and 21" deep.

upgrade 75 to 120, keep tx5 and add reefbrites?

upgrade 75 to 120, keep tx5 and add reefbrites?

I am upgrading from my 75 mixed reef to a 120 mixed reef.

I have the aquactinics tx5 and like it. Would I get enough par with adding two reefbrite leds strips as I upgrade to the 120 and keep the tx5?
I was going to add a blue and a 50/50 strip.

Would I be better of to sell the aquactinics tx5 and buy a sunpower 6 or 8 bulb unit?

I can not hang fixture.

thanks

How close are your lights to the water? Mine are 6+ inches and i never have any salt spray, you may try raising your lights a little.
