The T5 Q&a Thread

So I installed my two ATI Sunpowers 4x24 and 4x39. I might be adding more retros depending on how the corals do, but the lighting does cover all of the coral in the tank. My question is what is the typical lighting duration? I can control two bulbs at a time, how many hours of the day should I have all of them running?

If your interested in my lighting upgrade here is a link to that thread with lots of photos http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2001852

Hey grim I went with your combo of 4 blue pluses,1 purple ,and 1 daylight and it seems almost too blue for me. I was wondering if this combo would be overkill for a mixed reef ati powered set-uo:
Front to back-
10k ati
Blue+
10k ati
Kz purple
Blue+
10k

Or equal blue+ and 10k on a 6 bulb set up. What would either of these combos be overlill on a mixed reef setup?

Hey Grim, I am looking to replace my current bulbs and go with all KZ ones, no other brands. I use an ATI PM 8x80W dimmable unit.

Any suggestions on how to arrange the other bulbs? Bulbs 3 and 6 must be KZ Fiji and Superblue respectively.
KZ Coral Light 10,000K
KZ New Gen 14,000K
KZ Super Blue 20,000K
KZ Fiji Purple

I was thinking this order from Front to Back:
Super Blue
New Gen 14,000K
Fiji Purple
New Gen 10,000K
Coral Light 14,000K
Super Blue
New Gen 10,000K
Super Blue

Thanks in advance...
Andrew

I try to do the dusk/dawn 10 to 12 hours a day and the rest 6 to 10 hours.

You could replace one blue plus with a GE 6500K Daylight and probably get what you are looking for with only changing the one lamp.

What you have should e fine. Other than the purple their just isn't enough difference in the lamps to get too worked up over the placement.

So, I think I've nailed it down to the ATI 36" 8x39W SunPower T5 High-Output Fixture X2 to light the 76" of the tank. Dims. 84x24x24 weir on the end.

How high should I hang the lights from the tank? How much gap between the lights or butt together?

With the back of the tank against a white wall & taking light bleed into consideration, should the light be centered, slightly to the back/front over the tank?

Thank you.

I'd center them over the tank with about 2 inches between the fixtures. 4 to 6 inches above the tank

Hey Grim
I like the super blue look. In a 8X80 powermodule would it be a problem to run
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue special
ATI Purple Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus

Would this give me color problems on my SPS or just a bluer tank?
Do I have to run any 10-15k bulbs at all?

You could run all blue plus if you really wanted too. I would run 2 purple plus and forget the aquablue.

I am picking up a 120 gallon acrylic tank next week and am wondering about what lighting I should use. The dimensions are around 48x24x24 and I plan on growing mainly LPS and zoa's, naybe some softies. No SPS.

What fixture would you recommend? Please keep it affordable!

Should I do a single 48" fixture? 2 smaller ones? Thanks!

help

hey all maybe someone can help. I have a new wave t5 8 bulb fixture. Only 4 of the bulbs are lighting. It seems that the ballasts are wired in a way that they both power all of the endcaps. I have many extra bulbs that I know work and that is not the issue. They bulbs that wont start flicker a bit but never ignite. One of the endcaps on one of the bulbs that is out is cracked a bit but doesn't seem to cause the problem. could one of the ballasts be bad and is there a way to test the ballast?

8x54 ATI Sunpower would be my first choice followed by the same size Tek light.

Take a lamp out of the set of 4 that works and see if that causes the others to go out. If the other 3 fail to light with one removed then we know the new wave is using true T5 ballasts, which I kinda doubt but maybe. If that is the case then the broken endcap could be your problem as a true T5 ballast wont fire if there is a bad lamp or lamp circuit. If this is the case watch the lamps and see if one doesn't flicker. That would be the suspected issue, either a bad or improperly installed lamp, bad endcap or loose wire.

If they are using workhorse ballasts those will fire with a bad or loose lamp. If that's the case you need to try to trace the AC wires for that ballast back to make sure one hasn't come loose. If the AC wires appear to be good then you probably have a bad ballast.

I picked up a NEP 36" second hand with an interesting set of bulbs that at first I wasn't thrilled with but have grown to like a lot with additional viewing time.

Currently the setup is:
Front
ATI Aquablue Special
Geismann Midday
ATI ProColor
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue + (new bulb, my only addition)
Geismann Midday
Back

The Dusk Dawn in 1 + 5 is nice because of the blue dominants for periods of morning and evening viewing, though I like the really like the natural/clear look when all 6 bulbs are running.

I'm considering changing the ProColor to a KZ Fiji Purple and the rear bulb to either a Blue+ or UVL Actinic White. The rear bulb is 1" in front of a black backed rear wall and would be closest along with bulb 5 to the top of my rockwork. If I chose to keep SPS I'm wondering if I should get the Blue+ here or even another aquablue special.

I'd like to replace the bulbs as they are over a year old. I'd like to keep the overall look, but interested to know what you think Grim. I'm really interested in Zoa's and LPS to be able to be placed in most areas of the tank, an anenome, and perhaps SPS though, the SPS are not critical. I've read that clown gobies like to perch on montipora, and i'd like to maybe put some in down the road. Tank depth is 20", the top of my rockwork to bulbs 5 and 6 is ~8-12". I'm also interested to know what would be a good replacement for the ProColor bulb, I cant find that type anymore.

Change the rear Giesemann for a Blue Plus and the Pro Color for a fiji purple or ATI purple plus. SPS maybe on top of the rocks.
