So a 6 bulb tek will do fine on a 24 inch deep tank? which bulb lay out would you look at for that? Thanks for the input rtparty

Depends on what you want keep. If I was going to be keeping clams on the sandbed, I wouldn't even consider anything but an ATI.

If you want more of a mixed reef with LPS and softies on the sand, a Tek will work just fine. I recommend the Tek Elite but if you get the standard Tek don't use the acrylic shield and get an external fan to cool things down.

Do corals benefit more from a white daylight bulb (GE 6500k, AB special, KZ new gen) than a Fiji purple or purple plus bulb?

I ask because of this post:

Here's a truly informative and very well done piece of research that explicitly tests the effects of light intensity, light wavelength, and other factors on the fluorescent colors of several representative SPS colors (including Acropora, Montipora, and Seriatopora). It's a beautiful study that gets down to the molecular level (monitoring gene expression of fluorescent proteins), with clear results.

Short version for nonspecialists:
- In general, higher light intensity yields more coral fluorescent color (I'll call this "color" below, but technical the findings only apply to fluorescent protein-based color).
- For some SPS, 400 PAR units of light is enough to max out this color.
- For other SPS, 700 PAR units results in more color than 400 PAR units.
- For all SPS tested, blue light yields more color than green light, which yields more color than red light.
-
Of course these findings don't apply if you have other color- or health-limiting factors in your tank, like sub-par water quality. Also, many of us know from experience that too much light can result in color loss, so don't think that nuking your SPS will necessarily be better.

I didn't read the study but don't need to really. Ask the thousands of people on here if they get better color from an ATI Aquablue or ATI Purple Plus. I bet you know which way the scale will tip. :debi:

You also have to remember that the Purple bulbs have a TON of blue in them still. For the Purple Plus you pretty much take an Aquablue and remove all green and maybe add a little red.

If you give the corals no red light, red can't be shown in their colors unless it is a certain pigment that shows red under blue light and I have only ever seen that in certain soft corals especially mushrooms.

Oh I agree that a FP will make the tank look better aesthetically. What I'm curious about though is will a daylight bulb color up SPS better than a purple bulb.

Do daylight bulbs not have any red spectrum in them?

Do daylight bulbs not have any red spectrum in them?

Sure they do. The GE has a nice spike in the red. I would say that the New Gen probably has very little red in it. I personally really like the GE bulb if I have at least 6 bulbs to use.

If you look at the spectrum chart for the Purple plus, it has a nice little spike in the green area. One thing to consider is, "Did the test say how 'much' blue, green or red light was needed or just give PAR?"

A GE6500k bulb is loaded with green and reds so it evens out the blues that we all love to run. Remember the days when everyone ran 6500k halides? Do you remember how ugly most corals really were? They all browned out over time for most.

Blue and red have been proven to be the most effective wavelengths to use on corals many, many times.

I have been looking at this Odyssea 30" 346W Metal Halide System and I really like it, I just wanted to see what else was out there before I pulled the trigger... http://www.aquatraders.com/30in-Metal-Halide-HQI-T5-Aquarium-Light-p/54262.htm

I know the reputation for Odyssea isn't very good, but I've heard that they have fixed most of their major problems... as a college student I cant afford to spend too much on lights, I just need something that will get the job done until I am able to upgrade.

If you can't afford a good light you have no business trying to raise clams or other high end corals. I'd save up for a good light even if it means waiting the set up the tank if you want to try demanding corals. There is no substitute for proper lighting. With a new lamp installed the Oddsagainsthresea stuff might give you enough light but how long with the fixture work? Also check craigs list for a deal on a used light. I'd buy a 4 lamp Tek before that thing.

Corals use light in the blue/green spectrum most efficiently. Yellow the least. With T5's I start from the perspective that you give them blue light and use the other colors to spice things up color wise. Completely backward thinking from the halide days where you added blue/actinic supplementation to color things up.

Rtparty - thanks for the reply, I was looking to try some ATIs or maybe Giessman bulbs

All bulbs can not be overdriven though. When I first installed the IC ballasts I tried some Blue Life bulbs which blew immediately. I managed to talk to the owner of BL who told me their bulbs can not be run on IC

T5 Fixture over a standard 120g

T5 Fixture over a standard 120g

Wondering if anyone here could help me? I am looking to step up to a 120g All Glass tank with dual overflows. It's your standard 48x24x24 tank. I'm looking to only keep mostly softies, lps and not too many sps. I am thinking of doing a six bulb set up. Does anyone have any recommendation on which fixture would work best for me? I am looking into the following models:

Tek Elite Air Cooled T5 Fixtures (6 x 54w)
AquaticLife T5 HO 6 Lamp Lunar Fixture (6 x 54w)

I am looking to install this in a vented/fan cooled canopy, the canopy is there mostly for aesthetic purposes.

Another option I am considering is using a couple ice cap ballasts I already own and building a retro kit inside the canopy.

What's the quality like on either of the fixtures? Would an 8 bulb set up be necessary?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Quick question on bulbs. What bulbs besides UVL can be used on Ice Cap 660 ballasts? I know that not all brands off bulbs can be overdriven which the Ice cap does, but what ones can?

I have been using UVL bulbs and they have worked good, but I don't want to be limited to only one brand of bulbs.

Imo overdriving bulbs shortened the life.

I need advice before i pull the trigger on 2 bulbs..

currently i am running 4 48'' t5's and 2 96w PC's my set up is the following from back to front

t5
coral life actinic
aqua blue plus
CL actinic
fiji purple

PC
hello lights 50/50
hello lights actinic

none of my colors are popping really... the CL actinics are coming out for sure theyre horrible.. Im thinking of replacing them with two blue+? i have an extra 50/50 and actinic for the PC's so i can go double 50/50 or actinic.. Id like to only replace the2 CLactinicsifi can because pc's are expensive.. any suggestions?

Couple questions...what are your opinions of the KZ bulbs...specifically the Coral Light (10K) and the New Gen?

I assume New Gen is roughly equal to the AB SP?

Tell them to switch to ATI! LOL

You can use Geisemann if they are them most available. They aren't bad bulbs, there is just better out there in my opinion.

The equivalents are like this:

ATI Blue Plus Gmann Actinic Plus
ATI Aqaublue Gmann Aquablue
ATI Purple Plus Gmann AquaPink

I also forgot to mention the tank will be sps dominated with a few clams brains welso lobophyllia platys and zoathinds. Don't know if this makes a difference. My tank is 18 in. deep.

I am planing on putting together a 125gal 6ft tank and want to put a T5 retro in the canopy.

I was trying to make things easy on myself and found two kits that I am debating right now. Could I get some expert opinions please?

First Kit is LET Micro 4 60" 6x80w from reefgeek
http://www.reefgeek.com/lighting/T5...-Output_Retrofit_Kit_w!_Bulbs_by_LET_Lighting

second kit is TEK 2 60" 2x80w from aqua cave (would get three of these to equal 6 bulb) and would have to source bulbs too.
http://www.aquacave.com/60-tek-2-t5-retro-kit-br--2-x-80w-lampsbr-by-sunlight-supply-2177.html

Pricing seems comparable, and the fact they are complete kits means I wont forget to order a part and be stuck in the middle of a project waiting for stuff.

So am I on the right track here, or should I go a different route? Opinions on each reflector? Bulb suggestions?

(BTW it will be a mixed reef, not dominated by anything in particular)

Also forgot, whats best for cooling fans, and mounting locations? I would guess two fans blowing down the 60"length of the bulbs?

Tek Elite will work fine. Just make you have enough room for air movement in that canopy. A retro might be a better way to go but I wouldn't use the Ice Cap ballasts. Since you aren't keeping SPS, 6 bulbs should be enough.

4 ATI Blue Plus, 1 ATI Purple Plus and 1 GE6500k

For the T5's I would run 2 ATI Blue plus, 1 ATI Aquablue Special and 1 ATI Purple Plus or the Fiji you already have. So buy whatever gets you to that combo.

The Coral Light and Aquablue are comparable. I think the coral light has a little extra red or something. I don't deal with KZ bulbs too much because I don't find them worth the money.

I really like the New Gen though.

I like the KZ new gen much more that the aquablue special. It doesn't wash the other colors out like the ati bulb.

Only bad thing is, it will tend to shift spectrums over a few months time around to 12k, but still better than the aqubalue.

What fixture again or is it a retro?

I still like ATI more but Gmann bulbs aren't bad especially if someone local carries them for you. I've got most LFS around here switched over to ATI. Good riddance to Hagen and Coralife!
