The T5 Q&a Thread

I have a 10 bulb 48" fixture I got a recomendation 6 months ago, but I am just purchasing bulbs and wanted to know if anything changed? I noticed a Actinic white bulb you recomend that was not around then. I have a 4 bulb setup on my current tank that is Blue +, Figi Purple, AquaBlue Special, Blue+ and I am happy with the color.

Also My tank will be a SPS dominated mixed reef with a water level of 19" and 2" of sand. I am trying to figure the best height over the water for the light fixture? A minimum and maximum recomendation would be great as I would like a little space between the top of the Rimless tank and the fixture. My tank is 32" wide if that matters?

Thank you for your time and effort!

I'd run 6 ATI Blue Plus, 2 UVL Actinic White and 2 GE 6500K Daylight and grab a ATI Aquablue as a spare and play around lamp

4 to 8 inches above the water should be good.

Tek 48" T5 Fixture with 4 lamps over 55g tank
Would this be a good set up for a mixed reef, though mostly looking for zoas, palys, and acans.

Hi Grim
I currently am running a 240gl. 60Lx30Wx24D pennisula style tank. I have mainly SPS mixed with some LPS and about 10 clams, crocea, maxima, derasa. Tank is lit with 3 dbl ended 14k pheonix bulbs and 2- 80w fiji purple and 2-80w 14k next generation kz T5.
I am thinking of switching to an ATI 60" 10x80 power mod.

1. Will this fixture be bright enough for depth and length of tank, with addition to my existing T5?

2.Will thier be a noticeable change in energy (less) consumption over my MH?

3.If this fixture would, work, what is your bulb recommendation keep in mind the tank is viewable from 3 sides and I like the Phoenix 14k look in color.

Thank You for expert input.
Brian

What's is the difference between Aquablue and the GE6500K? What would this mean on an LPS tank?

The Aqaublue isn't yellow like the GE6500k.

I recommend the Aquablue over the GE unless you have at least 6 lamps. The GE will pull out some yellows and greens that an Aquablue can miss.

Right now I am running a 6 lamp Nova Extreme pro on my 90 gallon reef. Just got brand new lamps running front to back blue plus, aqua blue special, fiji purple, aqua blue special, blue plus and actinic. The bulbs have just been replaced last week but now I am looking to upgrade to an eight lamp tek fixture what two lamps would you recommend I add to the lamps I already have and what order? This coloration has worked well for me for the last year so I don't want to change all eight lamps.

The 8 bulb Powermodule would be plenty for your tank. Especially since you have the other bulbs already.

Depending on the wattage of your MH, you will see a decrease in energy. I am assuming you are using 250W halides so you are using like 1200W right now. With the T5's you should be right around 1000W or so if you use all 12. So a small savings. But I see no reason to use all 12. You could probably get away with 10. You could use all 12 and just throw in a few actinics that are only run a couple hours a day.

Another Blue Plus and Aquablue.

I don't think an 8 bulb Tek will fit over your tank however. The Teks are 24" wide and your tank is only 18" wide if it is a standard 90.

Look at a 6 bulb Sunpower or 6 bulb Tek instead.

OK Grim....

I'm thinking I need to decrease some PAR in my 75 gallon tank that has a Solar Flare fixture. Everyone thinks softies will melt with the "usual" bulbs.

How does this combo look? (I studied your lamp page for an hour!!) 1st column is what I currently have. Second is what I'm thinking of substituting.

Front:
Aquablue change to KZ New Generation
Blue+ change to I.C. Deepwater (this is my Dawn/Dusk)
Fiji purple change to I.C. Twilight
Blue+ change to Actinic Blue
Blue+ change to I.C. Twilight or keep Blue+ (this is my other Dawn/Dusk)
Aquablue keep as is

Will this give me the same color as column 1 but less par so I won't burn out anything? My plan is to have a mixed reef. Softies, a clam, and start with some easy SPS.

I'm open to what anyone has to say:spin3:

Edit: tried to make those columns but it didn't work. Sorry!

The tek is only 20 inches wide and part of that is the housing I believe.

grim onceagain iv had all t5 lights start to burn out this time using a workhorse ballast ( i stoped overdriving with the icecaps)

do you think waterproof endcaps could be causing to much heat?

Could I still use my current bulbs in the sunpower. Or would you go with somthing different.

Front to Back now

Yep that would be perfect. I would change the order a little.

OK Grim this is what I doing. I'm going with the 6 bulb sunpower for my mixed 90 gallon. Right now I have brand new bulbs in my Nova Extreme Pro. Front to back

Blue plus
aquablue

aquablue

actinic

It was recommended that I change to 3 blue plus, 1 aquablue, 1 fiji and the ge 6500. Which would you go with and what order. I will be getting new bulbs with the fixture since its cheaper in the long run that way.
