Who's carring the ultra solaris. Will be setting up a 120g,48x24x24 in next few months, sps dominated tank. Really would like to put 1 or 2 t5 fixtures and not have to run MH. Don't want to have to worry about placement of corals either though.

So what fixture would be my best bet....

help me understand that, your total time is 12 hours right? So your running them in combination at some point correct? How do you do that with a 6x54?

i agree with the theory of not having to keep the lights on that long. But, when you come from the old skool of this hobby, it's hard to imagine not running them that long. I will see how I can set them up for 10 hours. Got to figure out how to do that so my wife and son can have their time looking at the time. Any ideas on how to set that on a 6x54?

Hello again,

Looking for advice on my 75G. Currently only has live rock curing in it at the moment. However I would like for you to take a look at the current set up and let me know what you think of this idea.

I currently have 2 Tek Ready fit 48" fixtures in my canopy giving me 4 X 54 in this bulb configuration:

AP
Aquablue
AP

Here is a picture so you can see the mounting as well:

As you can see mounted in the far back corner is a Tunze Reefpack 500 that sits in the tank. It also sticks up into the canopy and would prohibit me from mounting a fourth 48" strip. I went with the ready fit because I wanted the rigidness of the housing since my canopy is open/glasstop and didn't have many mounting options. I could add a 36" readyfit in the back row and that would not come in conflict with the skimmer cup.

Do you see any issues with the color in the tank if that last strip is only 36" instead of 48"? Remember the Tunze system takes up almost the whole corner of the tank under the area where the remaining 12" is.

Actinic comes on one hour before and stays on 1 hour longer.

The 36 shouldn't cause an issue as long as you don't put a different mix of lamps in than is in the other 2.

Would a 54 watt E ballast (ballast factor 1) overdrive a 39 watt lamp in the same mannar as a IC ballast overdrive lamps?

Well, 12am to 7:30 am is not going to be a good enough 'down time' for the corals... a mere 7.5 hours of darkness. I run mine from 3pm until 10pm, and if I want the option on certain days of earlier viewing, I can turn on the bulbs earlier and then just leave them on, but 3pm until 10pm is a good amount. If I wanted/needed an 8 hour day, I would just leave them on until 11... and sometimes, for 'late viewing', I do that.

If you want a 8-10 hour day, it sounds like you would do best with something like this... on at 3 or 4 pm, and then off in the evening. The other reason I do this is so that the lights come on AFTER the hottest part of the day in summer... keeping the apartment and tank much cooler.

Would a 6 bulb Tek T5 system with Ice Cap ballasts be too much power for a 120 gallon tank with no SPS? Or am I better off using a normal ballast? Thanks!

Id go 6. I think you will end up wishing you had 6 if you buy just 4. the extra bulbs could come in handy. While you could get away with 4, it might limit your bulb selection, and 6 bulbs opens up more opportunities.
