Grim,

What do you think of this for a 156 gal. (60x24x25)

Icecap Retro from ReefGeek
(9) 60" 80 watt T5's
(3) IceCap 660 electronic ballasts

I could have three different lighting stages.

Would you recommend this and which bulbs would you choose.

Thanks for you reply

I purchased the 4 lamp Centium ballast from Advance. Suppose to be better than Universal's triad and has Intelivolt. The Centium has a grey lead wire that you have to connect in order to run all four lights at the same time. Advance told me you can put an inline electronic timer on that grey lead. Can anyone tell me if this is such a timer at this website
http://www.kalyx.com/store/proddeta...0/CategoryID/12000.0/SubCatID/2845.0/file.htm

If not, does anyone have any idea on how else to put this feature of the Centium ballast which would allow different bulb start times to work?

Not sure about the timer but Triad sells the exact same ballast, I wouldn't be surprised if the same company in china makes both

I'd stick with 8 lamps, 9 would be a tight fit. Other than that should be cool.

Actually, according to this Advance company info

Headquartered in Rosemont, Illinois with production facilities located throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Asia, Advance manufactures more than 1,000 fluorescent and HID ballast and LED driver models within its 1+ million square feet of state-of-the-art plant space and has sold over 1 billion ballasts over the course of its six-decade history. A Division of Philips Electronics North America Corporation

So there's a slim chance it could have been made here in the U.S. !

How long do a set of t5 bulbs last? Since recently after 6-7 months all the bulbs in my Aquactinics 5-bulb fixture seemed to burn out over that last month or so. I originally used all Aquaz T5 bulbs. The photoperiod was 10 hours a day. Now I am running this bulb config:

Front
ATI Blue Special
UVL Pure Actinic
GE 6500K
ATI Blue+
UVL Aqua Sun
Back

Will I expect the same results with this config, or do I need to buy new bulbs every 6-8 months? Thanks for any info...

Well, take solace, it's not made in Venezuela!

A lot of the so-called German lamps are made in Ecuador:D

There may have been an issue with the Aquaz lamps. I know of at least one person who got over 18 months out of his lamps using the same ballasts as your fixture has and his setup wasn't cooled. Hopefully your new lamps will last better than a year.

If I use only 8 lamps can I still run (3) IceCap 660 or do I have to run (2) IceCap 660 and (1) IceCap 430?

I would rather run all IceCap 660's just incase I could fit another light in there.

What bulbs would you recommend and in what order?

Thanks again.

Using the 3 660's for only 8 lamps will work and makes sense. For lamps try

Front

Blue Plus
Pure Actinic
GE 6500K
Blue Plus
Midday or GE 3000K
Blue Plus
Aquablue
Blue Plus
