Sorry, must have missed the fact you were doing 80's.

ATI has a good 80 watt actinic. GE daylight or Giesemann midday for the Aquasuns

Thanks so much!

HI Grim,

Im running a constellation on my 75. i want to upgrade my tank to a 60x24x24 or 60x30x24 (high). would the constellation be ok on the first option if i kept the high light corals away from the ends? i have a mixed reef with more and more SPS. with the second option because its 30inch wide if i added another 2x54 ice cap retro would that be enough

thanks?

Hi Grim,
I was a MH user and after hear so much good thing about T5. I am going to make the switch! I have some newbie question about types and placement of bulbs.

For a 36"x18"x18" tank(70% SPS, 20% zoas, 10% LPS and a clam or 2), I will be getting a 36" TEK fixture 6x39w with new 2 aquablue+, 1 mid day, 1 actinic+ and 2 slightly used GE 6500K. How should I place them?

Do I need to get new bulbs to have a 12k-14k look and good growth? If I do need to get new bulbs...I will be ordering from sunlight supply...
Giesemann:
36" 39w Aqua Blue+
36" 39w Midday
36" 39w Actinic+
36" 39w Actinic Pure

And UVL bulbs.

Thanks alot in advance!
Gary

Grim,

I am upgrading from my current 24g aquapod to a perfecto 75g RR tank. I want to do t-5 lighting instead of the HQI I currently am ussing over top of my aquapod. The two lighting fixtures I am looking at are the Current Extreme Pro 6x54w with individule reflectors or the Current Extreme 8x54w with a single reflector. Would it be better to get the two extra bulbs or is the system with two less bulbs but individule reflectors better? I have a mix of LPS, SPS, and a derasa clam. I will want to venture into other types of clams.

Grim, great thread. My tank will be 36" long by about 20" front to back. If I put 8 t5's on IC430s (possibly 6 on 430s if the actinics shouldn't be overdriven), how tall should I make the tank for all sps/clams (able to keep them on the sand bed)? Thanks in advance.

edit: on IC reflectors.

Lighting recommendatin for 120G in-wall

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. I'm planning a 120G in-wall tank for my basement and I've been looking at different lighting options. I'm looking to do a mostly SPS tank with a few reef safe fish and maybe a clam or two. I've been looking at the T5 VHO IceCap SLR retros on reefgeek and I'm trying to figure out how many lights I would need. The tank is the typical 120G (48x24x24). Or perhaps there's a better choice than the IceCaps like a Powermodule fixture? What bulbs should I get? Since it's an in-wall it won't have a canopy so I can be pretty flexible on the light configuration. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Also, thanks for all the advice you provide - great resource!

Option 1 would be fine. Option 2 I would either do a 8 lamp Ice Cap retro or good 250 watt halides if you have a lot of SPS

Grim,
First off thanks for all that you do for us.
I have a 95 gal (48x24x17) tank that I am starting to add SPS to slowly. Currently I run a Reef Geek Tek High Output retro kit (4 x 54 watts). It is not overdriven but do have the IC reflectors. I run FTB: Blue +, Aquablue Special, Blue +, Aquablue Special.

I like the color but like everyone else want better growth and color. I have 2 options:
1. Cram the lights to the front of the tank and/or change out for different lights. The lights are only 4 months old.
2. Add another 2 x 54 Tek 2 retro kit in the space between bulbs 1 -2 and 2 - 3.
I try and think about energy costs but think this would be an option.
Which option do you suggest and which bulbs?
Thanks again.

The Pro nova is fine but grab new lamps for it. Get 3 ATI Blue Pluses, 2 UVL Aquasuns and a Super Actinic. The placement of the lamps will make sense once you see how the fixture is wired.

If your all overdriven 24" tall is easy.

Grim-

Wow there is a lot of info here. Thank you in advance for your help.

I am looking to buy the Aquactinics Constellation. I have a couple of questions.

I am just starting a 90 gal reef. I will not have much in it until it seasons for a while and then will add softies and SPS down the road (9 months). Should I start with one bulb set and then change it down the road as I add 'stuff' or should I just use the same bulbs that I start with?

Which brings up the next question which 7 bulbs would you recommend?

How often should they be changed?

Do you recommend any LED add on for night viewing?

Thanks again!

should i put rainx or car wax on my reflectors before i install them?

You could try the wax, rainX might have some kind of toxic fumes.

I might go all-T5, but want to at least change my VHO actinics over to T5s.
What would you recommend as a T5 replacement for the URI Super Actinic VHOs? Would ATI Blue Plus bulbs work well or do I need the pure actinics?

Do a 8 lamp VHO T5 setup

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Aquasun

Wire them up so 3 blues and a actinic on one ballast for your dusk/dawn set
