The T5 Q&a Thread

That setup looks real nice Nanz, I was reading that someone (Fiji) had the 2 procolor bulb setup, but found that in the 3:1 ratio of other bulbs to Procolor some of the corals turned purple instead of staying blue for some reason after a couple months. How long have you had yours?

thanks for the advice, Grim. One more question if you don't mind...

When I bought this 5 light fixture for the 65g, I really didn't have intentions on growing SPS in the tank. Well, now they are really catching my eye and I woudl like to provide the best lighting in a t5 fixture. My question is, would it be of significant benefit to the corals to upgrade to a 6 light fixture? I read your website and understand that I don't want to downgrade the quality from where I am now (Aquactinics), so I will either stick with them or go to a higher end.

Thanks for the service you provide here - it is appreciated

light is about 1 1/2" above the water, sensor is 17 inches below. 6 Aquablue lamps. Haven't checked PAR on a 6 lamp powermodule. The Sunpower has 2 fans with a variable power supply to control the speed. 7.5VDC seems to hit the sweet spot for this unit.

Grim-
Interesting to say the least.whitch power module fixture did you test in the past(memory says 4 bulb fixture?)and how did that compare to the sunpower ?

thanks-Graves

im not sure if an ati 24'' 6 bulb powermodule woule be enough light for a 30'' cube. i plan to keep mostly sps, but may have other things in there. would the powermodule suffice??

thanks!

I just updated my lighting combo a bit if anyone is interested in how this looks. I've tried almost every combo with 7 bulbs and this is what i liked the best. Very nice crisp 14k blueish look which brings out red and pink nicely

Snaza,

What happened to the pink stylo you had next to the green candy cane? It looks like it has turned purple?

Hi Grim,

Your advice is great and would love to have you opinion on what combo I should run with my 36" Nova Extreme Pro over my 46 gal bowfront. I have softies, zoos, couple clams, LPS, and SPS along the top. Currently running stock lights and noticing the SPS looking duller than when I first got them. I'm looking for better SPS growth with colors popping overall.

What do you think of this?

Front
ATI Blue Plus
UVL Super Actinic or ATI Blue Special
ATI Pro Color
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus

Not sure whether to use Pro Color, Aquasun, or Fiji Purple
But would this combo mix well or does it lean more towards a blue look. I would prefer a brighter/warmer look with blue popping rather than a general blue glow. Or something similar to Phoenix 14k bulbs mixed with T5 look. Open to any brand/model suggestion. Thanks!:)

I am not sure about the positions of the lamps but either mix would be fine. If you use the actinic use it on the same circuit as two Blue Pluses so it will be a nice dusk/dawn.

Grim... what combo would give a radium MH look? I was reading another thread where it was all tanks that ran radiums and that is exactly the color I like...

Probably 4 Blue Plus, a couple aquabues and a GE Daylight or Giesemann Midday. AB's in the 2 & 6th and GE in the center.

Very bright Blue look.

Grim,

I ended up going with this combo after your recommendation and speaking to greg at reefgeek.

1 UVL aqua sun
1 ATI True Actinic
1 ATI Aquablue Special
3 ATI Blue Plus

How would you arrange these? I am going to try to get them going tonight if possible. The new tank is almost full of water :bounce1:

Thanks,
C.G.

Is it correct that there are not many choices with color temps etc., with 60" T5s?
I am getting a 60" tank and don't want to buy a 60" fixture to find out that I am limited on the choice of bulbs.
Thanks

go with the 60 in. bulbs if you can fit them. Your correct that there is a limited # of bulbs in 60in but you will find you can get pretty much any spectrum of bulb you wish just maybe not the manufacturer that you want it in. Reefgeek.com has a great selection and top notch service.

Yep. UVL doesn't make 60" lamps. They are also more expensive to have shipped. I run 48's on my 60" tank sitting right on the frame of the tank and it lights it pretty good to the ends aesthetically.

Go with what you have until you find yourself being unsatisfied with the results. I've seen clams on the sandbed (Dursas) in a 24" tall tank under a 4 lamp Tek T5 which doesn't have the output your rig does.

I'd maybe do 8 lamps but you should be fine as long as the corals are under the lights.

Well, I just ot a good look at ATI fixtures, and I really like the look. They are about twice as expensive as the TEK, but as a one time expence, perhaps it would be the way to go for me. I am looking at a pair of the 36" x 10 bulbs for my 84" tank... Would this be enough light to reach the bottom of my 24" deep tank? will the two of these light 84" of tank all the way across?
With the 2 cords each, one controling 2 bulbs, and one cord controling the other 8, is there a bulb recomendation to replace the pair of 400wMH, (10,00k), and the pair of super atenics now running on the tank? It seems I could turn on the 2 bulbs on one fixture, then the 2 on the other, then the next 8, and finally the last 8. Reverce at night when its time to shut down. Might look pretty neat when the timers get set right.
Sort of at a loss for the bulbs thouh. With 20 bulbs total, at better than 20 bucks a pop, it could be pretty expensive to change my mind later.
