hey guys,
my 8 ft. 240 has had: (2 7-bulb Aquactinics Constellation fixtures)
6 ATI blue plus HO
2 UVL Uri super actinic
2 UVL Uri Aquasun 10,000K
2 GE 6500K Daylight
2 ATI aquablue special 12,000K.

Time for new bulbs and am thinking I would like to try the Korallenzucht figi purple and/or maybe a red.
Planning to order from reef geek.
any bulb suggestions?

Looking to try my hand at SPS in a Oceanic 58.

Looking at 234 watt Nova Extreme pro or the comparible TEK lights.

1) Will they cover SPS in that tank?

2) Is it worth the TEK lights cost over the Nova?

3) Is there a comparible difference with cooling? The nova comes with a internal fan setup, but the tek does not.

Much appreciated!

grim what is this talk of label ends and dedicated cold blablalba?
i always install the lamps with the logo that is printed on the bulb face down

are you talking of somthing else?
as you know i had a bulb go bad fast and am wondering if maybe i installed it wrong

OK, need some suggestions. I've had 215 (72x24x29 deep) SPS reef for several years, and I'm trying to simplify a bit - we are NEVER here on weekends, and I work 70-80 hours a week. Not enough time for the complexity (Ca reactor, kalk reactor, chiller, etc. and the associated electric bills). So... I've dumped all my SPS. I currently have 3 x 400w 20K Helios in Lumenbright reflectors, and a pair of 72" VHOs on a 660 Icecap for actinic (no, with the 20Ks, I don't need them).

My plans are to just keep my softies, anemones and few LPS I have - along with my fish!

I'd thought about going VHO, since I already have them. So, I could do one of the following:

Stay VHO, and buy another pair of 72" w/ ballast (would that be enough?)

Keep the VHO actinics, but add 4 x 36" T5s

Diverting the Icecap to 4 x 36 T5s, and then get another Ice Cap w/ 4 x 36" T5s.

Do the above, but add a pair of Icecaps, giving me 12 36" T5s. Might just as well keep the MH?

Or, would I be better off going 48" T5s?

TIA

Try this

Front
ATI Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus
Fiji Purple or 75/25
ATI Blue Plus

I run a similar mix (ATI Pro Color instead of fiji or 75/25 in #6) and it's the best look I have ever gotten for my taste.

Tek with a 2 fan Azoo clamp on array blowing air across the center back edge of the fixture. Even having the air blow down a bit from the top works well. Just dont direct the air stream right at the lamps at the lamps.

Cold spot, It is the area of the lamp that will basically determine the internal pressure of the lamp. By keeping that area cooled you get max output.

The ATI and Fauna Marin fixtures are designed to have an air duct that blows on that area of each lamp. The design is such that the air is drawn in the housing, over the ballasts, out to the cold spot, down the length of the tubes and out the opposite end with the vent holes in it.

Order a 4 x 80 watt T5 setup from reefgeek to go with your existing VHO Actinics. BUT order it with Reefgeek brand reflectors and the 660 Ice Cap ballasts instead of the 430's9You'll have to call them). The 660's are more powerful and can each run 3 of the lamps instead of 2 like the 430. That way if you decide you want some SPS again you could add a couple more lamps and go to town with them up on the rocks.

For lamps do this

VHO Actinic

ATI Blue Plus
KZ Fiji Purple or ATI Pro Color
ATI Aquablue
ATI Blue Plus

That will be plenty for LPS and Softies. Keep an eye on Anemones, with T5's they have a wider area of acceptable light so they may mograte to an area with preferred water flow. It's nothing you can predict, they might not move at all.

Even with just 4 T5's if you have Montiporas you can problebly keep them if they are in the upper half of the tank.

Grim, thanks for your wonderful selection of bulbs in which you suggested to me last year. I'm still running the 7 bulb aquactinic constellation and love it. I know T5s prolly last longer then a year, but I feel like I should start to replace them soon. My tank is becoming more and more SPS dominated, and I was wondering if you still suggest my current bulb configuration, or if you have found a new combination to better suit my needs with the advancement of technology(bulbs) and such.

This is what I have now

Front:
ATI Blue +
UVL Aquasun
UVL Super Actinic
UVL 75/25

ATI Aqua Blue

Thanks again for your time and your great help on such an important part of our reef.

Not sure on firing order on that fixture but maybe change the order so you get a couple Blue Plus' with the UVL 75/25 for dusk/dawn.

I like that combo you have now. Maybe change out the Super Actinic for another Blue Plus. That way you have better PAR.

Hi Grim,
On my way to downgrade my tank from 250g to a 130g (51*28*20 shallow rimless), I've already ordered my ATI PM 10*54W T5 fixture. My tank will be heavily SPS dominated along with a couple of small clams and some lovely LPS( if I can manage to find a decent low light spot). As a personal preference, I like to look of blueish tanks. I'd appreciate any bulb suggestions (mostly ATI ) from front to back incl. dusk/dawn lamps.

thanks :)

You get the red from the 2 75/25 lamps but some actinic kick too. The GE lamp pick up greens a little brighter than the aquasun/

I just ordered 48" bulbs for my 7 bulb retro-fit on my 60" 150 mixed reef. Slots 1,3,5 are on Icecap 660 #1 (dusk/dawn), and slots 2,4,6 on Icecap 660 #2. Slot 7 has yet to be wired, which ballast would you put it on? I was thinking 660 #2.

I ordered the following and am looking for order input (keeping in mind the ballast wiring), I did order 8 bulbs, one extra 75/25 in case the 6500K didn't work out:

3 x 54W Blue Plus
2 x 54W 75/25 14000K
1 x 54W 11000K Aquablue Plus
1 x 54W 6500K Daylight
1 x 54W 10000K AquaSun

Thanks in advance for you advice.

That might work. Have 1,3,5 be your dusk/dawn

If you are going to add a 7th lamps do a 75/25 towards the back a bit and you can add that to the dusk dawn to brighten it up.
