I'm planning to get the Aquactinics TX5 for my new 40 breeder (LPS/SPS) this week. I want a 20k look, something a little bluer than my current Phoenix 14k. I was thinking:

ATI Blue Plus
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue Plus

Is this a good idea?

That's a great combo. LOTS of PAR for your SPS too so they will be happy. If the Fiji is too red for you then you could try a UVL 75/25 in its place.

But I really like your combo you have there.

fixture for an odd-sized tank

grim,

thanks for all teh advice you post; great stuff. i need to get lights for
a tank 82in long by 23in front to back. the tank will have mainly softies,
and will have a few high (== shallow) spots for corals needing more.

what sort of fixtures would you advise? one 72in, or two 36in? what
about the front to back distance?

Question concerning Hagen Glo T5's.

I'm running a 29g prop tank for xenia and green star. It's been doing fairly well with just four CF 6500k, but I recently added two 24w Hagen T5's with one bulb of 18k and one actinic. I haven't seen any comments on this particular brand of T5's. Opinions?

Additionally, I'm debating putting a pair of clowns and and anemone in it. Is this enough light for the BTA (sorry for the somewhat off topic question)?

Just showing pff the finished product of my moon light install. And at last................... we have moon lights. It looks really wonderful!! The pictures don't quite show it as cool as it is!!

Do this for the placement

Front

Aquablue
Blue Plus
Fiji Purple
Blue Plus
Blue Plus

That way you have 2 Blue Plus on slots 2 and 3 to use as dusk/dawn

Do the Aquactinics 72 inch Constellation

Front

Blue Plus
GE 6500K Daylight.
Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus
UVL 75/25
ATI Blue Plus

That will give you 2 blue plus for dusk/dawn, 2 more blue plus and a 75/25 for second stage and a GE and 75/25 for midday.

I use that combo, looks nice.

Dont know squat about the hagen stuff. Ac long as you keep the PC lamps relatively fresh you'll be OK. Feed the anemone once in a while and just keep an eye on it.

Grim,

I have a 90, that I just set 2 T5 retros on. I am running all ice cap reflectors, and IC 660 ballasts. The bulbs it came with suck. I was told it was a blue look, and when I got the bulbs, I have one blue bulb. I was wondering what you suggest for bulbs. I can run 7 over my tank.

Grimm,

Change of plans bro, last time I promise. Im going with a 75 gallon tank, normal size. I still want to go with an all T5 setup and would still like to have torch coral, other sps, softies, and maybe even clam.

How many bulbs would you get at what watt and which bulbs would you personally put in there.

Thanks Sir

Hello,

I am planning a retrofit lighting project for my 40 Cube. (24"X18"X21). The tank will support Softies, LPS & SPS.

I'm leaning heavily towards an IceCap, 6X24W T5 HO Retrofit kit with (Universal AccuStart or Vossloh-Schwabe) ballasts, from Reefgeek's. I've read very good reports about this retrofit on the forum.

Bulb selection and firing order would be:

ATI - Aquablue - 12K
ATI - BluePlus - 6.5K
UVL - Aquasun - 10K
ATI - BluePlus - 6.5K
UVL - 75/25 14K
ATI - BluePlus - 6.5K

Any suggestions or comments about this setup would be appreciated. Also , would upgrading to the Icecap 660 ballasts and the very HO output rating be worth the extra $160 in the above mentioned setup?

Thanks,

Mark

Ok,

You will have to forgive my ignorance, still a little new at this. I'm going to be upgrading my 65g to a 150g. I know I want T5's how many and what flavor. This is going to end up being a mixed reef with fish and live rock. Right now all I have for corals is a few Zoa's, Mushrooms, Torch and a Hammer.

Tank is 72x18x28

Thanks

Lonnie

No you won't need the IC 660's. The 6 bulbs setup is plenty for that tank. Call reefgeek and get the reefgeek reflectors. They are the same price as the IceCap and have better performance. They will still send you the same ballasts and bulbs.

As for bulbs I would rearrange them to this:

ATI Blue Plus / Ballast 2
UVL 75/25 / Ballast 1
ATI Blue Plus / Ballast 2
UVL Aquasun / Ballast 3
ATI Blue Plus / Ballast 1
ATI Aquablue / Ballast 3

I personally like to have my UVL 75/25 turn on first with my Blue Plus. It really is up to you what order they go in but make sure the Aquasun and Aquablue come on last so it really brightens up like midday.

Do you want a fixture or retrofit kit?

I was planning on a retrofit, I can put the pieces together myself.

Well you have two options that I know of.

You can run a 6x80W T5-VHO set up. It will leave the sides a little dark but that is a great place for softies and looks pretty cool. Or you can go with 2 rows of 36" bulbs side by side. You would need 12 that way. 6 on each side.

Oh PS - with the 36" you have a much better bulb selection

rtparty,

Thanks for the feedback and the info on the reflectors. Your bulb arrangement and firing order does make better sense than mine. I'll be placing my order this afternoon.

I had a question I was hoping someone could answer. I currently run a 250w halide fixture thats also has two 54w T5 bulbs for actinic. The halides bulbs are so bright that it completely overpowers any florescence the T5 provide, could I overdrive the T5's with a different ballast to make their output higher so I can see more blue out of them? Would that even work or is it more trouble than its worth?

Change the actinics for 2 ATI Blue Plus bulbs. They are a lot brighter than the actincs and also help corals to pop.
