The Tang Information Thread!

Since there has been some ever-deadly e-drama on Scott's (capn_hylinur) thread, I'd like to give it a fresh start. It was a great idea, and I think an open discussion on tangs (or a place to ask for help regarding a tang) could help de-clutter this forum.

This is a place to ask questions or give your feelings on tangs (i.e. "how can I get my new baby naso eating?" or "I would never put x tang in less than y tank size like you're proposing"). I would like to keep this thread constructive. :)

My family has put up with the set up of my 90g reef tank for months now, it will be ready for fish soon (just working on corals now) and to thank them for their patience and my "lack of attention" i have told them them can make the first few choices for the tank.

My daughter is dead set on 2 clown fish and a regal tank and my better half wants a yellow tang. My question lies with the regal tank...i have heard so much about their ich problems. Who has had a regal that can give some input on them? If they are Qt'ed properly first is there as much of a concern. If they are bought very small does that increase the chances of ich with them as they are small and weak? Should they be put in first... or as a last fish?

Feel free to comment on yellow tangs at this point as well.

Some 'experience' answers would be very helpful...i've done a lot of research but now i need some hands on info...tx!

Purple Tang Question

Purple Tang Question

I just got a purple tang the other day and it has irregular white spots on its body. It is not ich but it looks more like a discoloration on the skin. What is causing this and is there anything I can do to get rid of them? Thanks in advance.

If you qt the Hippo for 4+ weeks, treating ich if it appears, then you shouldn't have an issue with ich. Ich can be eradicated and is best to do so in a qt. IMO all fish should be qt before entering the display.
I honestly wouldn't put 2 Tangs in a 90 gallon tank. Most Tangs do best in a 6' tank, putting 2 in 4' would be very stressful. Not enough room for each to claim its own territory.. I think the Yellow would be the better choice here. The Hippo will get quite a bit larger, can max out at 1'.

I can't say I'm sure on the cause, but I think it is stress related. Since the fish is new, that may be why you see it on yours. The spots sometimes change places or even fully disappear sometimes, right? Despite the cause, I've seen it on my purple a few times and the only thing to do is to correct whatever is bothering it. Your fish is new, so let it settle in. It's not actually harmful to the fish from what I've seen.

I have always wanted a Sailfin Tang but never got one since I only have a 120 gallon tank. Back in the winter the LFS owner mentioned that he had some really "bad case" fish in the back, in his sumps.

It seems a customer had bought the Sailfin and a Yellow Tang and put them both in a tank with a Maroon Clown fish that abused them mightily. The fins and most of the tail were gone on both fish.

A week or so later the LFS owner said the Sailfin was still alive in his sump. He did not want to bring such a beatup fish into his fron display tanks but didn't know what to do with the fish. He offered to give it to me.

So, it is now about seven months or so later. The tail of the Sailfin has fully regrown. The top fin has gained some growth (maybe an eighth of an inch). It was into the meat of the back, so that eighth of an inch is a huge improvement.

Question: Will the fin ever fully grow back? The fish is about six, maybe seven inches long, seems very healthy now. It eats like a pig and I feed it lots of Nori, varied flake food and occassional frozen food. Nothing is picking on the fish at all now.

I will keep this "rescue" fish whether the fin grows back or not, but I was just curious.

Thanks Lukfox! I will make sure to take care of it like every other fish I have. Hopefully it will go away soon 'cos it's really bothering me.

I see those discolorations on mine.. I found out that they were simply minor abrasions/lesions due to the tang's habit of sneaking in tight rockworks... however it would really help if you can post a clear pic.

I agree --when this happened to my sailfin I at first thought it was a parasite---it was only a scape

+1. I feel that a yellow tang would be much more suitable for a 90G tank. I was originally planning to put one in my 90G. But I would never put a regal blue in my tank - they're just more active and get much larger. Yellow tangs tend to top out at 6-8" in our tanks; a regal blue will get up to a foot and swim more actively. Most people consider linear swimming distance more important than total swimming distance (8'x2' tank better than a 6'x6' tank).

I'm glad this thread is working out well. :)
P.S. capn_hylinur - my name is Scott, too. :)

great name, Scott:D

there are other tangs in that 6-8 range that you could add to a ninety.
I compensate for space in my 110 gal by having a 5550 gal flow rate in the tank. The tangs--yellow, blue, sailfin and powder blue treat flow like a hamster does to an exercise wheel.
I have also removed alot of live rock from the display tank and spread it around the system--sump and two refugiums--this gives more room also
