The Tiniest Angel EVER.

i know of an lfs in corpus that has collected them and a few other species (blue, french, grey, queen). never this small of course. and there was this big hooplah on the local forum between the 'experts' and the shop owners. turns out, at least in texas, there is no restriction because this is not a native species. and it was collected about 30-40 miles out on the oil rigs

the yellow band at the very back of the caudal fin, coupled with the angled curvy third yellow stripe, tell me that it's more likely to be a french angel than gray. gray angel has a single short stripe at the beginning of the tail, not the end. it also has a relatively straight and not angled third stripe. i suspect that this fish could either be an abnormal juvenile french or a hybrid, but time will tell (pretty soon actually). you should know for sure in two months.

Ok cool so for now he will remain a french I guess. Thanks!

Aw, how cute! I had to get out a dime after seeing that picture. I don't think I've ever seen a fish that small. He'd look great in my pico! ;)

also i think you are right in that yours has a clear end to the caudal tip. here are pic references...

Man this is tough- I mean figuring out what he is. Might just have to wait and see. I will try for some good pics of him in the tank this weekend when I have a little time.

And yeah I said to my self gee this would be the coolest fish for a pico for like a week or two till he gets too big :D.

i would just give it a week or two and watch the angle of the third stripe, and the color development of the caudal fin.

I'm betting Grey angel, its not only the color of the tail but the shape is different too, the grey usually has a more squared off tail and the french is much rounder.

Yeah, I must add this observation someone else made. If its a P. pardu where is the blue edging? Or two both species have this as at a certain size??
That's a funny sort of dodge for my home state, though not that surprising. Since they only are found here on deep, offshore banks & reefs, they are not "local"..
Florida can try this with little bitty Queen angels! LOL
I forgot to add this: Man, is that a cute fish!
Good luck with the little guy..

Thanks! I think we will find out too soon exactly what he is as he grows.

It is a grey, but some pet stores do call them black as a selling point, which would you rather buy, a grey fish or a black fish?

Like the photo above, french angels, even at the size of your fish have a perfect circle of yellow, not a bar.

The law is a Florida state law that says it is illegal to collect or possess a juvenile grey or french that is under 1 1/2 inch and a blue or queen that is under 1 3/4 inch, rock beauty angels have to be over 2 inches and under 5 inches (all other angels have to be under 8 inches) to collect or possess. If it was collected outside the state of FL I don't know but as long as you live out of the state there should be no problem as long as your state does not have a size limit on tropical angelfish.

Now I could be wrong but last I checked Michigan did not have a size limit for collecting tropical angelfish or any angelfish for that matter ;).

Awesome! It's crazy to think how big they get compared to how small they start off.

Yeah I always have to explain that to the non-fish people so they understand the significance. I mean this is no neon tetra we are talking about, it'l be over a foot one day.

Yeah it looks like a grey to me. We see them that small all the time while diving, but they have to be 1.5 inches to legally collect here in Florida. Both grays and french's have the blue coloring on the bottom of them, but the french has a yellow circle on the tail, and the grays tail is not yellow on the very end.
