The Ultimate Eight Foot Softie Reef

Lol only 5! Yup, using the multiple heater principle.

I decided to add an additional level to the pyramid to for weight, but really it was initially so that I could keep them all on level 2 + 3. Two of the heaters are actually on the bottom, one in the center, and two on top. Unfortunately, they are heavy enough to tip down toward the bottom so I still need suction cups.

There's a method to my madness, err...even though I haven't completely figured out what that is.

You could make a set of 90* elbows, attach it to the pyramid and then hang in on your sump. I've never had any luck with suctions cups in saltwater.

I hadn't seen your build before for some reason. Great job and great looking tank!

Did you know you were coming up on a year since you started this build?

Doolin, any pics of what you're talking about? How would I attach it to the tub?

wondermidget, you are quite talented. Very cool sketch.

Megabite, yes I'm very proud everything is going so well after almost a year. I think it's appropriate I'm reevaluating the systems' weak points at this juncture. Thanks for tagging along!

I just did a 20 gallon water change. My salinity was a bit low, and the tank needed a good scrub down. The new sump is a breeze to work with, and I can now use my handy dandy vacuum to suck up detritus. I also used it to clean out the overflow. So perfect!

Well my MSX Mini S arrived with the lower stand broken off. I'm trying to get ahold of them to make sure I can fix this myself.

I've removed the fish traps in order to reseal them and try again for the last few damselss
Here's the last pics of the tank with MH over it. You'll notice I've removed the panels. (Apologies for the darkish pics, but only two pendants were on and there is little backlight in the tank room)

Got flow?

Glue the pyramid to one leg and hang the other over the sump. It would keep them up off the floor of the sump, or be a little more reliable than suction cups to stick it to the side. I assume you've finished that project already tho :)

That looks really nice. How does the tank look to your eye?

Very pleasing and soothing. I'm incredibly impressed with both the intensity and spectrum of Aquatic Life's bulbs. Even more so because I assumed I would be swapping them out. When I talked with Dave on the phone about their bulbs, I knew they had really put some heart into their product. He had actually tested other bulbs on the market and worked up charts to compare their color spectrum. Their 420/460 bulb is very much an ATI Blue + with some purple hues. I think what pleased me the most was that they were doing this as a development tool rather than a marketing tool; and they were very open with their PAR readings compared with other bulbs.

The tank is bright, but not as blinding bright as the MHs. It looks better though. Many of the colors are crisper. Most notably my orange cap and Acropora. In fact, the Acropora shows pink with green and purple hues with purple polyps under the new fixture, while under the XM 20ks it looked washed out with no purple of any kind.

Marc, you touched on one of my concerns when moving away from T5s when you stated that the MHs looked better to your eyes than the T5s I test fired. I'm quite pleased at the look! More importantly, it's lighting the whole tank nicely. I fudged the fixture over to the left because I lose some real estate on the right where the peninsula overflow and powerheads are. Nothing grows there anyway. :)

LED moonlight supplements are just awesome. There's really 16 with this fixture, and the look is so cool!

One powercord and the integrated timer is a breeze. I'm in love with the fact you can turn any of the lights on and off while not affecting the time sequence. All you need to do is scroll back to "auto" for that particular set of lamps. The two fans come on when either set of T5 bulbs is activated, and they blow air towards the ballasts and out the center outlets. The fans are whisper quiet.

The acrylic shield is amazing. Yup, I got excited when I realized the acrylic shield is on a slide out tab and locks back into place. YOU DON'T NEED TO REMOVE ONE SCREW! It may seem like a silly thing to get all excited about, but if anyone, like me, had one of those old Tek fixtures and had to wrestle getting the acrylic shield out of there then you know why. ;)

The hanging kit was a bit of a pain, but the quality is nice.

The reflectors are a very nice mirror finish. They are all one piece folded, but they are large for each bulb. Personally, I was concerned that they were one piece. It's actually a silly notion, because it's the same material, and each has a large, individual reflective surface. In essence, they do have individual reflectors. It's pretty innovative the spacing and angle of the reflectors in relation to the bulbs. These fixtures were originally designed with 13" wide tanks in mind....pushing to 18" Aquatic Life has been working on developing fixtures with wider tanks in mind.

Of course, I was concerned about going the route of what some would say is a middle of the road, more mainstream, fixture. This is especially true with only 4 bulbs in each bank. These bulbs go here, these there...for best results keep the sequence...yada yada. Here's the switch for your 420/460, here's the switch for your 700+. Obviously, for the seasoned reefer who wants to play with bulbs, this is an initial turn off. Folks it just works. Plain and simple. I'll go back to point one. Their bulbs are FAR better than I expected, and having a Blue + like bulb with purple tones is beyond my expectations.

I'm going to keep a close eye on things and observe my animals' reaction to the new light. Time will tell. For now, I'm ecstatic I can return to my original vision for this tank. :fish2:

Very good report thus far. I just ordered a 150w Phoenix 14,000K DE bulb for my angled tank, but if that doesn't make the difference I'm looking for, I may change it out with a tiny version of your light fixture. Will this vendor be at MACNA this year?

What's the company / brand name? Do they have a website? You're allowed to share where things come from - maybe I just didn't see it as I scrolled back up just now. Was it pricey?

http://aquaticlife.com/

There was a link at the top of this page. :p
They also have an excellent YouTube and Myspace page.

These guys used to work for Coralife and decided to start their own company. Dave has been "around the block" of the aquarium industry and worked for ThatFishPlace for many years as well.

They will be at both Reefapalooza and MACNA this year.

Take a look at all their fixtures at:
http://marinedepot.com/

They have an HID(MH) and T5 version, a power compact version, and modular T5 units without the controllers.

My particular fixture cost $399. It's normally $499. I received the $100. discount because I took a customer return(never over a tank) that could not be sold as new. This price includes the bulbs. Bar none, this is the best price on the planet for a fixture of this quality with LEDs and a controller. I'm almost a bit confused by it all. It's just a really simple and smart design.

So everyone knows, I have no special interest or stake in this company.
I just really think Aquatic Life has something special going on. They're really open to development, and this openness goes hand in hand with the interaction and input of reefers.

Here's some pics I found of their HID fixture over a reef next to a tank with 20k halides:

Man, as this tank evolves, it just gets better and better. I really like the look of the new lights, and I bet that your corals will respond in a positive manner. What I really like about your system (and you!) is that you are not content to just sit on your laurels, or to just "deal" with some of the initial design shortcomings...Rather, you have chosen to re-evaluate and tweak as needed along the way. Ups and downs have happened, but you're learning and sharing the whole way. Bravo! Thanks for the ride thus far.

One additional question- forgive me if it's been asked before: What kind of evaporation rate are you getting with the open top? Is it as you expected, or about what you thought?

Not to hijack the thread- but Marc, the angled tank would look so cool with T5s! On the other hand, the Phoenix bulb is, in my opinion, the most aesthetically pleasing of the halides.

Thanks again for sharing this inspiring aquarium with us! It will be really neat to see if you get some different coral growth and color with the T5s. Like what I see aesthetically already!

Is that how many a gaggle is? I never knew.

Your tank really is looking great. That stuff on the sand would bug me, but it is an 8' long tank. How many nassarius, cucumbers and fighting conchs do you have in there now?

Thank you for all the pictures. The corals look happy and fluffy like they should.

You've done a great job keeping the acrylic clean and scratch free. That's quite a challenge.

Scott - I just put that 14,000K bulb over my angled tank less than 3 hours ago. I'll let you know at MACNA if I like it by then. ;)
