The_Rider - Zen Garden (~250g system)

thanks da5speed and Ed :)

I'm getting ready to order my tank around next week. My last concern is the dimensions of my external overflow box.

My tank will be 60x30x20 with an external overflow box on the short side 30x20, I was thinking 12x5x??. I tried to find some info on overflow box design, but I didn't find nothing. I want 2 drain 1.5" and 2 return .75"

What dimesions should I used and pro and con if possible.

Thanks :)

This is going to be a great build ... good choices for inspiration, those threads and together with Chingchai's are the trend setters IMHO.

Tone :)

I think of going 14" x 6" x 8" for the external overflow, do you think it's ok ? I will have enough space to put 2 durso for my 1.5" drain ?

I'm about ready to order my tank, I'm still waiting on some detail with Miracles but it's should be the final design.

I'm waiting to know if they will need to put a brace on the bottom or not.

Feel free to comments or tell me if I forgot something before it's too late

Sketch up looks great. What are you planning for flow?? Tunze or MP40w?? If MP40w, 2 on each side (next to your external overflow) will be great!!

If Tunze, then you might want to hide it by having the overfow box extended so your tunze can be hidden behind...

Hope I'm making sense here...

Looks fantastic so far, keep up the great work

Nobody have a multibar angel or any experience with them ? :S
(Para)Centropyge multifaciatus prove to be very difficult. They can be maintained long term, but the main challenge is finding a healthy (or close as possible) specimen to begin with, then trying to ween the fish onto prepared foods. It can be done, but I would not recommend it unless your willing to dedicate a QT to it (them), spend lots of time fattening them up, and have experience with delicate angels. If you buy one and try to add immediately to your DT (especially with other fish) the fish stands no chance at surviving. Regarding "reef-safe-ness," they will pick here and there but generally do not cause much damage. IME they've only nipped at SPS polyps.

For the fan, do you guys receive a little power supply with 5-6 adaptors at the end ?? Which one I'm suppose to take because two are fitting (black and green) but neither one start my fans. Are they suppose to be always on ? Or only when it's getting hot ?
Unfortunately this is a design flaw (IMO) on this light... they run 24/7, or until you unplug them. You can add a little timer to the fans so they come on/off when you want them to, here's a bit more info: http://www.reefbuilders.com/2009/04/29/cooling-fans-ati-sunpower-run-247/

You can always use a "space-saving" durso if necessary, some people call them "CL Standpipe." This is what I used and it's VERY easy to make and takes up half the room a Durso would normally. Steve detailed how to build them towards the bottom of this page: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1396999&perpage=&pagenumber=1

If you have any doubts about the overflow size, I'd ask Derek at Miracles what he thinks... tell him what size return you're using, what size drain holes in the overflow, etc. and he'll get you all set-up. Derek is a master aquarium builder IMO.

I'm not planning on hidding them in my external overflwo because I want to be able to move them around. I already have 3 Koralia 4 and bought 2 Nanostream 6055 to play around with my Profilux, and I will upgrade so 6105 eventually.

I don't really like the Vortech, my uncle has 2 for less than a year bought used, and one of is little ceramic washer broke. No big deal right ? Wrong ... Instead of having to buy only the washer, he add to buy another complete wet side because Ecotech doesn't sell only this little part that should cost MAX 1$ even if it was 5$ it's better than 90$.

Are you using Tunze on your tank ? Are you pulsing the pump to create waves ? How high is your level from the edge ?

Thanks Ed :)

Multibar :
Are they hardy once they are acclimated and eating well ?? Usually all the fish that enter my LFS are all eating and 90% of the fish I purchase they're were eating while I was acclimating them. I'm concern because I just lost my first fish today, a Goldrim tang. He got stress while I was taking apart my top and installing my new fixture. Was cover of ick in about 1 hour, was eating well and normal behavior until yesterday... He wasn't eating much but was still eating and today .... :(

I will also install a frag tank to my setup, do you think is a gonna be ok if I put them in there with caves to fatten them up or you meant quarantine them for diseases. I have an hospital tank but the parameter are not stable, I QT some chromis but I couldn't control ammoniac well enough.

ATI Fans :
I put my fan on my profilux, I not using a lot of outlet so for now I don't mind it but eventually, I will buy a timer

Overflow :
I will definitely look at the CL standpipe :) My LFS sent my plan to Miracles for last quote and comment should receive an answer today or tomorrow hopefully.

Thanks Stunreefer

Multibar:
Once acclimated and eating well all fish are hardy IME/IMO.

FWIW, I always assume all fish that come from LFS are not eating well (even if they ARE eating, they're not being fed enough) and have some parasites, as generally this is true. Also, if your in this "mindset" then you're always prepared when you bring home a new fish and QT accordingly, rather than the "dump and hope" approach, where one will bring home a fish from the LFS (assume it's eating and parasite free) and dump straight into the DT with establilshed existing fish, then hope for the best. This fish already has a very low chance of survival, even the hardiest of fish let alone a C. multifaciatus.

Your frag tank would be a perfect place to introduce fish in a low-stress environment and begin feeding them prepared foods without competition, however, you could not treat in this tank, and I highly recommend preventative treatments for fish, especially angelfish. I'm yet to keep/see a multibarred angelfish without flukes and/or internal parasites when initially imported.

You can have a great shot at this fish if you find a healthy specimen, and "approach accordingly." If you don't really, really want the fish, then I would look into other options as this one will require more time, patience and effort than many other species.

Fans:
Sounds like a plan to me!

Overflow:
It should read "CJ Standpipe", rather than "CL Standpipe," sorry about that!

I'm using Tunze for my new tank. Usually i set them on internal II as I have 3 x streams pointing at the same direction and it able to create a small short wave about 2-3cm.

Water level to edge is 3-5cm (depending on the wave)

I also use Tunze, they have proven the quality of their pumps for a long time, and spare parts are easily available.
Ok, they are a bit bulky, but there are solutions for that, like Ed did :)

I also pulse my three 6101 and one 6201 Streams, waterlevel to edge is about 0.7" (2 cm) Never have problems with spillage, just aim the pumps right! ;)

Good luck with the build, your ideas and plans look great.

Do you have any link to how to quarantine especially an angelfish ? Any special precaution for angelfish in particular ? I really LOVE these fishes and I will do anything to be able to keep a pair. Do you think I can quarantine them together since I'm prevently treating them for flukes and internal parasites ?

Thank you Stunreefer for all the great info :)

I will defintely have to play a lot with my tunze and profilux :)

I also read in your thread that you got a multicontroller and a Profilux, any reasons you didn't connect the tunze directly to the profilux ?

I don't think they are too bulky either. They blend with my black background perfectly ;)

Cause it's easier for me to play with the setting on my multi Tunze controller :D

I played around with a rendering program yesterday, really amazed by the render ... Pretty realistic, and really want to have my tank NOW ! lol

My sump isn't complete I still have to add some probe holder, balling holders and few little thing around. Will probably do it after work or tomorrow

I'm still waiting for a final quote from Miracles ... It sucks to have to wait to order something lol

I'm still pretty "depressed" about my current tank. Everything was doing so well for a year and now after my Goldrim didn't my copperband have sligthly cloudy eyes and my clowns are ever sliming :S I didn't introduce a new fish for 2-3 months so I don't know what's happening. All parameter are in check, nitrate 20 ppm, nitrite 0 ammonium 0 ... Still feeding them with garlic supplement and vitamins. Did 2 water change just in case ...Hopefully evrything will be back to normal soon.
