Thickness of steel on stand for 600G tank

Red Dragons!
I'm wondering what guage or wall steel you big tank guys are going with for your steel stands. I'm looking into a 120 x 36 x 30. What would you use? Thanks

Ryan, i am using 4x4 square tube with 1/8" thick wall and you know how big my tank is :D. By using bigger tubing, i only have to do one center brace

i am looking to get a steel stand built also for a future tank that will be 120x60x40... (120x 60x 24 tank).

evolust, are you having some one locally build your stand? or is it a company? was wondering what the cost of steel is per foot?

I'm also looking at building a steel stand for my Tenecor 500L (120" x 36" x 24") and was trying to deside on a stand design as well. Small world.

I'm not too sure of the cost yet as I dont really know what wall thickness I need. Its going to be local, meaning myself :) Anybody else?

A lot will depend on how you want the stand to look/function. For example, there will be a big difference if you try to span the length of the tank with no supports because access to under the tank is important, or can you tolerate a support ever couple of feet?

Maybe come up with a simple sketch of what you envision the stand to look like and we can go from there...

Good point, I will work on a sketch. The only thing that I see going under the tank is a CL pump so I wont need much access under the tank.

Here the stand for my 600g plywood tank it will be 2"x 2"x 3/16wall.

Hey Ryan, Fiziks hit it on the head with it all depending on what you want. Room over stability etc. I have a good steel guy out in Buckeye if you need it though I know you are east side. He did a stand (68x 36x 40") out of 1" box steel, one center brace and powder coated it. Even without the angles like in davis's pic,l it was more than enough for that weight and plenty of room underneath.

I just built my steel stand for my 600g tank. the dimensions are 120 long, 37.5 front to back and 30.5 tall. The top rail is made from 2x3x1/8 steel square tubing. The corner and center posts are the same material. The bottom frame is 2x2x1/8 and the cross supports are the same. I have 2 2x2x1/8 supports inbetween the 2x3 uprights for a total of 10 legs so it is something like this.

2x3 2x2 2x3 2x2 2x3

I can tell you it is a tank and seems to weigh everybit of 350lbs (just a guess or i am extremly weak).

My material costs were 241.00 for 100ft of 2x2 and 40 ft of 2x3

Would not change anything about it. I did get the metal at cost due to my father in law owning a fabrication shop. He is the one who supported my design.

I honestly don't care what the stand is designed like for my new 500gal (120"L x 36"W x 30"H). As long as the 36" width dimension has no center uprights so I can slide a massive sump in from the end, I am content.

The simpler the design the better.

I dont think you need that much, Here are picks for my 560/g 120x36x30 and it was very over built 2x2x3/16th

That's sweet. Did you build it or have someone make it for you? The quotes I received back from local fabricators in Chattanooga were around $1200 using 2x2x0.120 for the same size tank and the nearly the same stand design.

im building one ow for my 4'x3'x2' tank going with a 1"x1" steel tubing w/ 4 legs gonna look like a cube was told by many that was mre then enough.

call me crazy but i had my 375 72"x"48x"25 made from 4x4 tubelar steel and its 1/4 thick cost 1500.00 just for the steel tanks not going anywhere... lol

Here's mine by the way. Its 55 x 40x 36h. The tank is inwall, so the view is from the back. The main spans are 1.5 x 3 x 0.125 wall. Cross supports, legs, and bracing are 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.125 wall. I wanted to have a minimum number of legs for easy access. Its also splits in two to get it into the house. I still need to add the leveling feet and of course finish it, thinking of powder coat or lin-x. The steel cost ~$140 and then some beer and pizza for a buddy of mine to teach me how to weld!

nyvp, that is exactly how my stand looks only i used the 2x3 on conrers, center and top. You do not have to have a brace under the 36 inch sides...you can slide a large sump under there. i planned on using 100g rubbermaids.
