Think I just got the OK to upgrade......

So, my Wife randomly started talking about potentially upgrading from our 60G cube...... a little stunned I ran with it, and well almost an hour later she is still entertaining it!! So onto the goods....

I'd be looking at a 70-90G long (wouldn't do cube again).. with a nice stand that would look nice in our dining room by the dinner table.. I won't be doing many more, or any of the SPS I have now in the new tank and the rock structure will be a lot different.. Sump needs to be much larger than it is now (40B preferably). I can re-use the LEDs I have now, skimmer, etc so the investment will be somewhat minimal..

This tank would be my dream tank, structured around a Gig or a Mag... with some nice bubbles mixed in as well... I'll be keeping my torch, Frogspawn, and Hammers... The rest can probably go (SPS mainly)....

My Wife is excited about the opportunity to have a tank or two swimming around as well..

Anything else I need to consider before going down this road folks? What am I missing? The logistics of it will be a pain in the arse I think... Having two tanks going at one time (unless I can get some real nice cured live rock that will help). Moving everything slowly, etc...

If anyone wants to talk me out of it, nows the time... lol

Yea, I'm looking to even trade my 60G cube and stand for the next setup if possible... I really want to do some stuff differently this time around (plumbing, and have a MUCH bigger fuge... I mean huge.. heh). My fuge now is tiny, and that is something that needs to be fixed..

I'm not in a blazing hurry, but would like to get started soon... It might be challenging finding a Gigantea or Magnifica in the Chicago area though...

With regards to this being a trick... You're right.. lol. She's already talking about changing some stuff on the wall over there, and even know what she wants to take the place of our current cube. Sounds like this has been in the works for a bit now in her head.....

So a standard 90 is what you are looking for? I currently have a 90. I wouldn't recommend a 40 breeder as a sump unless you are doing custom stand and are leaving more than enough room to work with. The biggest I would go sump wise is a 30L which is what I have at the moment and can still be a bit of a pain in the arse to work with. The height of tank you will have to get used to as it is a bit uncomfortable to work with as well. Other than that you can do alot with a 90. GL on your new journey and hope to see the unvailing of it on a thread soon!

So why wouldn't you go with a cube again? Just curious.

Ohh, and be thankful you have a wife that is supportive. I need to walk on pins/needles just talking about my first tank plans. :/

Shouldn't be much of a pain to migrate to the bigger tank. You can do it in a day, unless the new tank will sit in the same spot as the old tank. Then there is a bit more juggling to do, but still a 1 day job.

From a 60 to a 90 is not that much of a jump, but if you want to go to a 125, I have a brand new one for sale. Dual overflows, very nice black stained oak stand and canopy too. Then you have some room to spread out, and you won't have to worry about upgrading again for quite a while. And if you still live in Algonquin, I'll deliver. Just tell her it's your Christmas gift! :)

enjoy.. have fun.

Thanks.... we'll see how this all goes..

Well, I don't know, I would like something like a 90 or 125... If I can find a reasonably priced 125 I would prefer that.. Regarding the sump, I have heard the 30L is a good fit, so I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Right now this is all exploratory phase, but I have the OK from the Wife and she said to use it before it expires... lol.

Well, I like my cube, but it limits me a lot in the type of fish I want to keep (schooling swimmers, tangs, etc).. Not to mention, I really want to keep a large true carpet and well, it isn't going to happen with 24" across..

The other thing isn't with the cube specifically, but with my setup... The stand isn't big enough to hold a sump that I need. The sump I have in there is a wee bit small, it works, but not big enough of a fuge, and I just need something larger... A 30L will give me a LOT more room to actually grow some nice size macro and export nutrients in the fashion i want... Other than that, the tank is nice, like new with not a scratch on it.. same for the stand.

I have sent you a PM. It all depends on price, and your willingness to work with me... One of the reasons we are doing this is I want to migrate to the new tank, sell the setup I have now (60 Cube, Stand, Sump, Skimmer, etc) and hope that that will be a wash in terms of price. I'm not looking to spend another 1k+ on top of the several thousand I have spent already... I already have 2x MP10s, LEDs, and the fast majority of thing I need for the new tank..

So if you want to chat, and it works out, I'm in for the 125... I was looking at a 150, but that's just a little too big for me... Now a 125... that's jusssst right :-)

Alright, well another update... Just found a nice Marineland 90G with stand, canopy, etc locally at a retail shop that is willing to drop their shorts as I'm a long time customer... The 125 PoolShark offered is a GREAT deal, but it's just too big.

Going to check out the 90G today, and might just make the investment... It fits our space well, and the Wife said the footprint on the 125 is just probably too much..

Will update shortly.. Thanks for the ideas everyone...

Also, anyone looking for a 60 cube, let me know... :-)

hmmmm..... still little pricey buying retail of course... Will keep looking for a 90G with tank, stand, etc locally...

Let me know if anyone has someone looking to sell, or wants to trade for a 60G cube :-)

Alright, well some good developments... For everyone telling me I should go big... We've decided to go with a Marineland 150G tank, with custom Oak Stand and Canopy set... I found one locally, just need to pick it up..... Updates to follow..

Anyone with a pick-up who is in the Algonquin area that wants to help, let me know. I pay well in Beer :-)

Holy cow! Talk about going big! :p That's a very good jump!

Yea, the stand, canopy, and tank came in at a price that is just almost nearly impossible to pass up. When I migrate and sell this cube, it will be a wash.. It's actually really badass... Not to mention, pick-up is a town over from me...

I haven't bought it yet, but am jumping on it now.

Wow! Congrats. I wanna see that bad boy when it's up. I've always thought about giving you a shout and checking out your tank since I go out you way all the time just never done it.

Sure, that is excellent, just let me know when.... One of the frustrations with this tank is the sump\fuge simply isn't big enough.... I'm having some nutrient issues and there is some hair algae cropping up in certain spots, which if anyone who has seen this tank ever can know, I NEVER had any algae..... The sump\fuge is really under-scoped, and thought I could get away with it but well, in the end (almost two years) I'm losing the battle...

Anyways, We want to have a tang in the house and should be able to with a nice 150, and I have always wanted a Gigantea with a nice clown pair, so this will allow us to do a LOT of stuff, not to mention, I have a LOT of lessons learned this time around (plumbing, etc) that I will be doing differently, and asking for help from the community...

On the bright side, if anyone wants to be a part of the move, I have a LOT of real nice SPS that need to be fragged (big colonies), so I was going to get Dre to come out and help frag these babies. So anyone who helps, can get themselves beers and assorted frags.

Long story short, the build hopefully will start soon, and it will be epic....... The planning phase is just as fast as actually starting the tank, lol...

Let me know if you're in the area. I work at home and am always here. There's beer in the fridge.

Sounds great! And who is this "Dre" guy people talk about either way? :D

hahaha... Yea, like I said, when the cube gets broken down and moved, there will be a LOT of real nice SPS frags, and probably frag my Todd's Torch, and multi color frogspawn football sized colony... So good stuff to be had, I'll give pieces as a thank you to helpers, and sell the rest to help fund this upgrade in part.

Right now I'm looking at a 125 with stand, for the same price as a 150 with stand, and canopy as well.. The Wife is hell bent on a canopy, so we'll see which seller responds first, and if the tanks are both still available....

The prices are great, and personally, if I'm already doing it, I'm kinda leaning toward the 150 if the seller responds :-) Go big or go home... We had the cube for almost two years, and plan on having this tank for a LONG time.

Great to see you back!!! WOW you have alge...lol!! Thats not good.. Been waiting for the invite buddy.. JLMK

If Cubbies is good, I might bring him also ;)
