Now, where on earth (in Bay Area, actually) can you get berghia?
Actually he could probably set up a berghia farm and do quite well!

Al G Blenny had a small tank with some Berghia in it, I watched them swarming an aiptasia. I don't know how well they are reproducing, but if nothing else, he'd tell you where they are available.

I am sorry to say that my tank looks VERY MUCh like the above.. :-(

I have tried the Berghia in the past but they were either lost or didn't acclimate well. Does anyone have a local source? (SF Bay Area?)

I would really like to get this under control.. Did the Joe Juice, Shrimp - but might have gotten the WRONG kind of pep.. :-(

Thanks!

I bought it at Aquarium Concepts in hayward

How much do those little suckers go for?

V

Aquatraders in San Bruno has great deals on shrimp. I got 3 peps for 10, and 3 saron for 12. I just qt anything thoroughly I get from there since their stuff is right off the plane.

But yeah, that's scary! I'm so glad I found out about peps or my seahorse fry tanks would be aiptasia tanks.

Aiptasia

Aiptasia

I've still got a small aiptasia problem in spite of trying peppermint shrimp and a copper band. Not sure I saw any reply telling where to get Berghia? I've also read that there are several types of pepperment shrimp and that only some kinds eat aiptasia. In the meantime, I'm just living with my aiptasia (two large -2" and one small - 1/2".) and trying to kill them with concentrated kalkwasser - it's not working for me. Maybe I should spring for some Joe's Juice? Anybody got any opinions?

Are you cutting your water flow when using kalk on the aiptasias? The kalk should be made into a thick slurry.

I've found peppermints to work well on aiptasias especially if you quarantine the rock in a small tank with the peps. I've had those shrimp take on even 2" tall aiptasias and totally eliminate them.

It was interesting watching that. The shrimps start with the tentacle tips and work their way in. After the tentacles are gone and can't sting the shrimps any more, the peps really go to town on the remainder.

Re: Aiptasia

For me, the most foolproof method has been to make a thick paste, insert it into a syringe you get with Baby medicines (i.e., no needle, just a small hole). You touch the aiptasia and it will retract into it's hole. You squirt the paste in the hole and don't touch it again. Within a few weeks, the paste will be the same color as the surrounding rock, including covered in coralline algae.

Best of luck,

Roy

He's breeding them to sell, and they seem to do the trick.

Success with Aiptasia

Success with Aiptasia

I tried the suggestions made by Mr. Ugly and Racrumrine. I turned motors off and hit the guys with a very thick paste of Kalkwasser, like toothpaste consistency. They've been gone for several days now and I'm thinking it worked. Thanks, guys.

An aside about the pepmints. I added some rock with aiptasia to a 2 gallon critter keeper with an airline and a heater and a pair of peps. Now the rock is clean and there are a ton of pep fry that I'm going to try and raise.

Nice job. Don't remove the paste from the holes. Just let the coralline cover them. The bright white paste gets really dull within a few days.

When I was first learning how to do it, I removed the white paste after about a week or so. The same aiptasia popped up the next day. I have also had them migrate from one side of a rock clear through to the other side via a tunnel in the middle of the rock! Their preseverance is amazing.

Best of luck,

Roy

Pretty sure, they're shaping up to the coloration, antennae and look of a peppermint shrimp. I was looking for a pic online without any luck. and I haven't really lit this critter keeper for photos ;)

Awe that tanks nothing. I had a infestation in my 400G for awhile that made that one look like there were only a few. I mean ALL of my rock was completely covered with them, you couldn't even see the rock. A few berghia's, some peppermint shrimp and a pair of CBB's later and now they are few and far between and that's only because the CBB can't get to them unless I turn the rock over. Sorry no pic's at this time of them but I may have some at home.

Same here. I had to remove one rock permanantly because it had too many holes for them to hide in. In other places, I've glued frags into their holes.

I like peppermints as a maintenance measure, but I'm not sure you can ever completely rid a tank of aptasia.
