thinking about getting an ro/di

Well maybe I ought to get on eBay and find a filter set. I want to get one of the inline TDS meters too.

The only other issue with that DI is that besides running horizontal, that its possible you will still get channeling through that resin because its small and running a relatively high flow-- I don't have any direct experience but read that the DI for that just has a single hole on either end (obviously with something to keep the resin from being pushed out)...

I happened to get a Spectrapure from Pufferboy when I bought his tank and replaced the DI cartridge when it was used up with a refillable DI kit I got from Airwaterice... I looked at the cartridge (and the one removed) and they had several holes all along the cap and so distributes the water at one end of the DI to reduce the chance of chanelling and bypassing some of the DI resin.

If you find you are not happy with that unit.. it would be real easy to add on a vertical (even dual DI) after it... at a later date...I believe most RO membranes are standard sized too so I don't believe you will burn any bridges by buying "cheap"....

The amount of time you go between replacing your DI resin is proportional to the amount of water you use, the rejection rate of your RO stage (which can be affected by low water pressure if you look at the graph in the link to the "ebay unit"), and the quality of your raw water entering your unit..... the RO stage will remove a set amount...

Example.. my raw water has 417 ppm TDS (well water)-- my RO out is 8 ppm (98% rejection), my DI out is 0 right now-- most people will change it if it gets up to 2 or 3.

THere are a ton of threads on RO/DI in the equipment section... sometimes gets pretty heated...

Adam, The idea is if the cartridge is horizontal the resin coud settle and water bypass the resin in the empty space. Vertical is supposed to be better. Like I said, I changed mine by unsnapping the cartridge and turning it from H to V.

so, I am confused, is it better to have the DI chamber mounted horizontally or vertically?

Sorry if i confused you-- vertically is better (and if you get the ebay unit with the horizontal DI, you would be better off remounting it vertical like described above), but channelling still may occur--- just due to its size (small) and there is no way to distribute the water as it enters one end of the DI stage... once again, I have no experience with this on that type of DI stage, just read about it here.... so its anecdotal...

The typhoon does include the inline TDS meter and pressure gage...

Purpose of the pressure gage- located right before the RO stage is to tell when your prefilter(s) are getting clogged up-- the pressure will drop-- so you will know to replace them....

Purpose of the dual TDS-- read after the RO stage and after the DI stage....

The TDS after the RO stage is there to monitor your RO performance-- either your raw water got worse, or if it goes up alot, your RO membrane may be bad or is leaking by.

the TDS after the DI stage is there to monitor your DI performance-- when this starts going up your DI is about used up-- if it equals your RO, then your DI resin is completely used up and is doing nothing....

I use a hand held TDS meter and just test the water in my storage trash can (I don't use in line)-- the color changing resin gives you some indication but the TDS meter is more accurate

IMO the inline is nice to have but not absolutely necessary... if you burn through alot of DI resin real fast, then that is another way to tell if your RO is bad.

If your production drops off, your prefilters are probably bad..... so the inline TDS and pressure gages are not absolutely necessary... just nice to have....

I do want you to get a quality unit, and from what I read the typhoon III is excellent--- but if its not in your budget and you can "get by" with a lessor brand then you might want to....
