Thinking about going BB

MiddletonMark, I have an ASM G3 skimmer which should be more than enough for export. Right now I have around 40X turnover in the tank. Maybe a SSB would be a good middle of the road decision.

I ran BB for two years but still had algae problems. Rearranged the tank (still BB) and it's much better.

Opened up the rockwork (removed about 1/3 - 1/2 the rock), propped the rocks up off the bottom using acrylic rods stuck in holes that I drilled, and increased the flow (hammerhead CL + marlin driving penductors). Now the poop has a hard time settling out before reaching the new Deltec skimmer.

I also included a valve on the closed loop that feeds into a 1/2" flexible tube (like a siphon hose). This can be used to blow off rockwork in an easy 4-5 min process.

Anyway, just wanted to point that out. I thought I was doing BB right, but I wasn't and it was a total pain.

no algal problems here

no algal problems here

I don't have algal problems, I am using seios and a very good rock structure setup for my 55 high. Basically nothing is touching the back or the front of the acrylic, and the water circulates round n round and swirls inward from two small rio 75s. I know their output is nill but its enough to disturb the circular motion of the water.

heartbreak - I'd think that would work :)
Never ran one, but seems outrageously oversized, too.

Gudwyn, good point. Getting flow `right' is difficult.

Any photos? Excessive algal growth is both in captivity and in nature more a matter of having enough herbivores to keep the algal growth back than a matter of nutrient availability. Nutrients do play a role in the rate of growth though, no question about that. You may just need more herbivores or different herbivores to correct the imbalance, i.e. you may not have a nutrient problem at all, but an herbivory problem.

Sounds like you had long term success with a dsb. Why not use one in your new tank? I went BB in my 300 and 215g. After battleing nitrates I added a ssb and 50g dsb fuge for the 215g and now adding a 65g dsb fuge for the 300g which is only sps. I believe I went with too much rock in the bb tanks and detritus may have accumilated in it.
